Best of show winner Juanye Lomax with Art Instructor John Marshall.

At Miller Art GalleryStudent art show competition showcases MCC’ers talentsMeridian Community College student Juanye´ Lomax was tapped the Best of Show winner at MCC Annual Fine Arts Student Competition.

The work selected was a three-dimensional design, “Grand Pencil.” “This piece was a show stopper! It is very memorable and has strong presence in the room. The drawing on the floor makes this come alive for me as the viewer,” said Chathom Kemp, professor of art at William Carey University, juror for the student show.

Lomax was one of 16 art students whose works earned an award in this show that will be on display through May 5.

“I like drawing,” said Lomax when he explained the award-winning three-dimensional design. “The pencil is the best thing for the artist and I thought this would work.” It took him about three to four weeks to complete the pencil and another week to create the pad, shavings and sharpener.

For his efforts, Lomax received $200 monetary award. After graduating on May 13, Lomax plans to pursue a degree at Full Sail University in char-acter design. “He has a good work ethic. I can see him going to places,” said John Marshall, art instructor.

In addition to “Grand Pencil,” Lomax received an honorable mention for another untitled three-dimensional design.
