The first North American Bridge Championships exclusively for players 19 and under will be held July 3-6 in Atlanta. This exciting tournament will feature the two-session Baron Barclay National Youth Open Pairs (with $2000 in scholarship prizes) and the National Youth Swiss Teams (with $1000 in scholarship prizes provided by District 7), along with many single-session games for less experienced players. Hundreds of young people from across ACBL are expected to attend, said tournament organizer Patty Tucker. “This will be a fun event for kids and their families. Most of our participants are 10-15 years old, and have played only a few years at the most. But they’ll get to meet many of their age peers in Atlanta, and play the whole tournament against kids their own age,” she said. Tucker hopes the tournament will also interest adults in starting classes in their own areas. “We’ve had a great response from kids everywhere, including Iowa, Illinois, Colorado and even Hawaii. Some groups are even holding fund raisers to help kids and their families attend.” Players interested in participating may visit www.youthnabc.org to pre-register or for more information. 51st Spring North American Bridge Championships Editors: Paul Linxwiler and Dave Smith Monday, March 10, 2008 Volume 51, Number 4 Daily Bulletin Detroit, Michigan Goodwill Message Today is Goodwill Day and my co-chairs and I invite members of the National Goodwill Committee to join us at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in Ambassador 3 on Level 3. Matchpoint playsBy Barry Rigal

This deal (from the first final session of theSilodor Open Pairs) would be very dull in 4♠ atteams: You’d claim 10 tricks and move on. But atpairs, how would you play 4♠ by South (1♦-1♠;2NT-4♠) on the lead of the ♥Q?

♠ 7 5♥ A K 4♦ A J 9 7 4 2♣ A J

♠ A 3 2 ♠ 8♥ Q J 10 7 3 ♥ 9 8 5 2♦ K 8 5 ♦ Q 3♣ 4 2 ♣ K Q 10 9 8 3

♠ K Q J 10 9 6 4♥ 6♦ 10 6♣ 7 6 5

You need to try to set up diamonds or ruff a club, but your chances of doing either may not seem good.In fact, you need a miracle in diamonds or a singleton♠8 or ♠A. You cash the ♥A K to pitch a diamond, then play the ♦A and ruff a diamond before ducking aclub. The best East can do is shift to a trump, andWest can win and return a trump. The ♠7 in dummylets declarer win and ruff a diamond, draw the lasttrump and use the ♣A as the entry for the establisheddiamonds.

An initial club lead sets 5♠; declarer ducks andthe defense shifts to trumps, playing two rounds of thesuit to remove an entry to dummy prematurely.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

The first two-suited bid many of us learn isthe jump to four of a major after partner hasopened 1♥ or 1♠. This bid promises more thanjust five-card support. It also has a singleton orvoid and another source of tricks.

Say partner opens 1♠ and you hold♠A 9 8 7 2 ♥7 5 3 ♦K 8 3 ♣9 2.

A meek 2♠ raise is more than enough. Change the hand to♠A 9 8 7 2 ♥7 ♦K 9 8 7 3 ♣9 2,however, and the trick-taking potential zoomsupward because of the side five-card suit.

A lusty jump to 4♠ is in order.Two-suited hands present bidding challenges,

but they are also exciting with lots of potential fortaking tricks. If partner doesn’t have a fit for yourfirst suit, you have an alternative to offer. Ifpartner does support your first suit, you haveanother source of tricks. Be optimistic andaggressive in your bidding.

Suppose you hold:♠K J 9 4 2 ♥6 ♦A Q 9 8 7 ♣K 2.

You have only 13 high-card points, but ifpartner raises your 1♠ opening to 2♠, try game inspades. The odds are excellent that you’ll be ableto develop 10 tricks.

When you use the Rule of 20, you arerecognizing the strength of a two-suited hand. There is no point, by the way, in trying to use thisevaluation method with one-suited hands. It’s apoor tool for that purpose. A little common sensenever hurts, though. Compare this hand:♠K J 9 4 2 ♥6 ♦A Q 9 8 7 ♣8 2

with♠J 9 7 4 2 ♥K ♦9 8 7 5 4 ♣A Q.

Clearly, it’s better to open the first hand thanthe second one, though they have the same patternand high cards. There is a guideline for these casescalled in-and-out valuation. You want the highcards in a Rule of 20 hand to be in the long suits. If you have 12 or 13 HCP, you’d probably openno matter where the points are, but a little self-preservation never hurts when you are consideringopening a hand with fewer than 12 HCP.

If the opponents open, there are a variety of

strategiesfor showing5–5 hands. One of themostpopular isthe unusualnotrump, usually ajump, toshow 5–5in theminor suits (over a major suit) or, forsome partnerships, 5–5 in the twolowest unbid suits if the opponent hasopened a minor.

In fourth seat, if the opponentshave opened 1♦ and there has been a1♥ response, the unusual notrumpwould be used to show the unbidsuits — clubs and spade in this case.If the opponent opens 1NT and youovercall 2NT, what could be moreunusual? You have 5–5 in the minors. The unusual notrump is familiarenough to most players that it doesnot require an Alert.

The Michaels cuebid also showsa 5–5 hand. Over a minor-suitopening, the cuebid promises bothmajors. Over a major-suit opening, you promise the other major and aminor. If partner wants to knowwhich minor you have, 2NT is themost common way to ask. Michaelsdoes not require an Alert.

Some partnerships use two-suitedbids with all point count ranges, but amore popular approach is to restrict them to twobidding situations: With very weak hands, say whenyou are not vulnerable and the opponents are, orwith superior hands of 16 or more points. Look atthe following two hands:♠K 9 7 5 2 ♥Q J 10 9 6 ♦4 ♣3 2,

and

♠A Q J 7 2 ♥K Q J 9 6 ♦A ♣3 2.You would use the Michaels cuebid over 1♣

with either hand, and pass whatever partner bidswith the first, but at least raise his major-suitpreference with the second.

the ♥A, South decides to give up on a grand slamas it is tough to discover if partner has both blackqueens.

Defensive commentary: In spite of the heartcuebid, East’s powerful heart sequence warrants aheart lead.

Play commentary: With a certain club loser,South needs to find East with the ♠Q, so the ♠J isled from dummy at trick two.

Defensive commentary #2: As East in secondseat, do not cover the jack! When dummy has twoequal honors, cover the second equal, not the first.Notice the difference. If the jack is covered, declarerwins, crosses back to the 10, sees West show outand leads a low spade to the 8. You take zero spade

tricks. If you duck the jack, but cover the 10,declarer wins, partner shows out, but declarercannot get back to dummy to finesse you out ofyour ♠9 4. Success! You wind up with a spadeand a club trick.

As second hand, when dummy has a numberof equal honors, cover the last equal. This is animportant defensive principle.

Robert Lebi and Dan Jacob won the four-sessionSilodor Open Pairs that ended Saturday evening. They earned almost al the matchpoints on this deal(rotated) from the second final session, when Jacobtook full advantage of the opponents’ bidding tomake a lead-directing double for Lebi:

Virtue is its own rewardBy Barry Rigal

This deal (rotated) is from the first final sessionof the Silodor Open Pairs.

Dlr: South ♠ A 9 2Vul: E-W ♥ A 4 3

♦ A Q 9 7♣ 10 6 4

♠ — ♥ K Q 9 2♦ 8 6 5♣ Q J 9 7 3 2

If North-South were left to their own devices, itis not easy for them to reach their optimal spot, which is a club partscore. There is nothing wrongwith 5♣, except that it doesn’t make!

But where West opens an undisciplined (feelfree to substitute your own adjective!) weak two-bid, the auction might very well go Pass-2♠-Dbl-3♠; 4♥-All Pass. How should you play 4♥ on thelad of the ♠Q?

Clearly, you need 3-3 trumps, so win the ♠A,pitching a diamond, and knock out a club honor.Ruff the spade return and knock out the other clubhonor. When a spade comes back, ruff, cash the ♥K Q, cross to the ♦A, play the master trump andtake the rest. (If you want to protect yourself a little, you can pitch a diamond on the third spade. Thatholds you to 10 tricks.)

As a separate issue, how should you play 4♥ onthe lead of the ♦J? If you take the ace, you mustimmediately cash the ♠A to pitch a diamond, butthen the defenders can tap you out successfully. If,however, you cover the ♦J with the queen, you stillhave the communication to set up the clubs.

When using bid boxes, ACBL suggests thatplayers tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at thesame time. When making an Announcement, use theAnnouncement word (such as “transfer”) and tap theAlert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid shouldmake sure his opponents are aware that an Alert orAnnouncement has been made.

From Dr. Brenda Fortunate and Ed WhiteEd: Brenda, I think you should be recognized as

representative of the thousands of part-time bridgeplayers who juggle work, family, etc., and still havetime left over for bridge. Tom Gardner sponsored youon the ACBL Goodwill Committee and our unit justgave you our annual Goodwill Award, but this “award”is from me.

Brenda: During the last weeks of medical school, the wife of a patient asked me two unexpectedquestions: Do I play bridge and would I play in a clubgame with her. Her husband was very ill and wouldnever leave the hospital. My head told me I needed tostudy, but my heart told me to say yes. Not havingplayed in almost 10 years, that weekend I bought ahow-to-play-bridge book and turned up at the game aspromised. In retrospect, the decision to play had aprofound influence on the rest of my life. That night, Imet my future husband (Ed) and many people whohave become dear friends.

Ed: I had just gotten divorced and spent all myfree time playing bridge. Some weeks after Brenda’sfirst game, my regular partner cancelled. Brendashowed up without a partner as well. The director,Gordon Parnes, said “Ed, you play with Brenda.” I notonly “called” Gordon, but “raised” him quite a bit andeventually married Brenda.

Both: Many thanks to the great group of Michiganbridge players, friends and competitors always.

The Kalamazoo Bridge Center, located at 648Maple Hill Drive in Kalamazoo MI, opened its doorsfour years ago. We have six games a week, two ofwhich are Non-Life Master games. We have lots ofspecial events and parties and we play bridge – lots ofbridge. Check out our web site atwww.kzoobridge.com and come visit us the next timeyou are in southwestern Michigan.

We also invite you to play in the KalamazooSectional, May 30 to June1, at the County

Fairgrounds. This year promises to be even better thanbefore as we will be moving into a larger room for allthree days. And don’t forget the fantastic pig roastbetween sessions on Sunday. To complement the pigroast, our great Kalamazoo cooks serve up some of thebest side dishes and desserts that you can imagine. There will be plenty of food and bridge to go aroundfor all three days for players of all skill levels.Tournament flyers are available on the ACBLweb site and the District 12 web site atwww.district12bridge.org. Copies are also available at the Information Desk.

Dr. Max Parker was one of the leading players inthe Detroit area. He loved and respected the game ofbridge. His interest was two-fold: First, the personalchallenge of solving bridge problems, and second, theability to inspire players to become members of theACBL. Sponsored by his wife, Evelyn Parker.

Our parents, Donald and Betty Carr, were bothLife Masters and avid bridge players. Their love ofbridge took them across the United States playing inregional and national tournaments. They played in allof the sectionals run by Unit 200 and helped promoteand bring new players to the game. As we, theirchildren, became adults, we would often celebrate theEaster holiday at their favorite regional in Toronto. Aswe look back on their lives, we realize that their loveof the game kept them active, invigorated and mentallyalert. The stories of their bridge escapades continue tobring those in their bridge community many fondmemories. It is in their memory that we dedicate thisevent at the Compuware Detroit NABC. May all ofyou enjoy the game as much as they did.

Mom and Dad – you are deeply missed. Susan,Mary Jane, Cecelia and our families.

Lynette Marcus and Ruth Temkin are beinghonored by us, their sons, Danny and Dick. Lynette

was a beloved Detroit-area player who became a LifeMaster at age 90. Ruth, a Milwaukee native, playedkitchen bridge and inspired Dick to play. They bothtook great pride in our bridge accomplishments andloved to discuss hands with us. They are always in ourhearts and we miss them dearly!

Daniel Marcus and Richard Temkin, bridgepartners and friends for 25 years.

Lotte Lee was born in Berlin and Wayne Lee wasborn in Lockney TX. Lotte and Wayne married in1972 and were active participants in the Detroit bridgecommunity. They died in 2007 within three months ofeach other. This event is sponsored by Rosella G. andJames A. Moody, best friends of the Lees for manyyears.

Tom GardnerTom Gardner was not only admired as a skillful

player but for his winning smile and gracious mannerat the table. He was drawn to sharing his knowledge ofthe game with less experienced players, knowing thatif players improved their techniques, their enjoymentwould also increase. Named the Goodwill Member ofthe Year in 1996, Tom served many years on theACBL Board of Governors and three times on theACBL Board of Directors.
