Accountability for a Quality Education System Today and To- morrow, or AQuESTT, helps to ensure all students across backgrounds and circumstances have access and opportunities for success. AQuESTT annually classifies schools and districts as Excellent, Great, Good, or Needs Improvement. AQuESTT values growth, improvement, and best practices in schools and districts not just assessment scores. One of the ways the NDE recognizes broader educational experi- ences is through the Evidence-based Analysis (EBA). Eighty-four schools were eligible for an EBA review this year with the possibility of an upward adjustment to their AQuESTT classification. COMMUNITIES ENCOURAGED TO US GRANTS U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Nebraska State Director Karl Elmshaeuser encourages rural communities in FEMA declared disaster counties in Nebraska to utilize the $2.2 mil- lion in grants available through the Community Facilities Program to assist in their recovery. “Nebraska has been hit hard by the devas- tating weather with 87 of our counties receiving Major Disaster Dec- larations,” Elmshaeuser said. “USDA works hard to help communities thrive and this funding supports in their long-term recovery. To date we have funded the construction of a storm shelter and the purchase of a four-wheel drive ambulance, generator, bunker gear, air packs and pager/radios for emergency responders and replacement of gutters and downspouts, shingles and underlayment for a roof re- pair. Be sure to contact us with your community’s needs.” The $2.2 million is included in the Additional Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act that President Trump signed into law on June 6, 2019. Area counties that have declared include Frontier, Furnas, Dawson and Harlan. SPORTS The McCook Community College men’s won two of three games over the Thanksgiving weekend in the Foss Motors Thanksgiving Classic. The Indians picked up wins Thursday over Dakota College at Bottineau and Saturday against Colorado Northwestern Commu-nity College and dropped a Friday decision to the hosts, Casper College. “I think the biggest thing we can take away from this weekend is that we fought,” said MCC Coach Kyle Drennan. “In every game we fought and we fought back and that’s good to see because that’s something we haven’t done consistently.” The Indians improve to 5-6 on the season after downing Colorado Northwest Saturday, taking the lead in the final minute of play to prevail 68-63. On Friday MC dropped am 83-73 decision to No. 25 Casper and began the weekend with a 97-66 win over Dakota College at Bottineau Thanksgiving night. Even in the 10-point loss to Casper on Friday, the coach was pleased with the fight exhib-ited by the Indians. “Every game is boxing match divided into rounds and in two games when won more rounds and against Casper we didn’t,” Drennan said. “We should have made some shots and we should have won that game. “We’ve got to grow and figure it out.” The Nebraska volleyball team was selected as the No. 5 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night and will host the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds at the Bob Devaney Sports Center next weekend. The Huskers, making their 38th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will open the tournament on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. against the Ball State Cardinals (20-11), champions of the Mid-American Conference. The 4:30 p.m. match will feature the Northern Iowa Panthers (24-10) of the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Tigers (21-7) of the SEC. Fri-day’s winners will meet on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Baylor, Texas, Stanford and Wisconsin received the top four seeds from the NCAA Tournament committee.
