Seeking input on actionable health inequitiesthroughout NL

Each year, Memorial University medical students converge onConfederation Building for the Provincial Day of Action, where theymeet with Members of the House of Assembly (MHAs) and policymakers to advocate on behalf of the health of Newfoundlanders andLabradorians.

Last year, the Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee chose toadvocate for universal coverage of Mifegymiso, commonly known asthe “abortion pill.†Throughout March 2018, 50 medical studentsmet with MHAs to discuss gaps in accessible abortionservices—particularly for those living in rural and remote areas.Following this week of meetings, the students continued to push forthe government’s commitment to the advancement ofreproductive rights throughout NL. Our campaign included an open-letter to the Minister of Health and Community Services, Dr. JohnHaggie, with signatures from key professional and communitystakeholders such as the Newfoundland and Labrador MedicalAssociation, the Pharmacists Association of Newfoundland andLabrador, and Planned Parenthood. These efforts came to fruition onJuly 18th, 2018 when the NL government announced universalcoverage of Mifegymiso.

We are currently in the process of planning next year’s advocacycampaign, and need help in choosing the topic for which we willadvocate. Thus, we are reaching out to health and communitystakeholders throughout the province, to draw on yourexpertise, and seek input on any health inequities, challenges, or barriers of which you may be aware.
