Learning German Evening Courses at the Language Learning
Institute (Winter Term 2019/20)
Understanding the language and culture of your
surroundings is important in order to interact easily in
everyday life, make new friends and feel at home.
The German courses offered by the Language Learning
Institute (Sprachlehrinstitut) give you the opportunity to
discover a country, its people and their lives. Based on
selected topics and classroom activities, you will be
introduced to German language and culture and to various
facets of student life in Germany and Wuppertal in
particular. The course programme aims at developing
profound communication skills in German thereby focussing
on the four competences: listening comprehension,
reading, speaking and writing.
During the winter term 2019/20, the Language Learning
Institute offers German courses leading to levels A1, A2 or
B1 according to the Common European Framework.
They are designed for absolute beginners as well as
advanced learners of German who are interested in
enhancing their already acquired language proficiency.
Detailed explanations on the different levels can be found on
page 3. If you are unsure which course is the best for you,
please contact [email protected] or visit room
S.09.12 for a placement test.

Learning German Evening Courses at the Language Learning
Institute (Winter Term 2019/20)
The following levels will be offered in the winter semester. The placement test
at the beginning of the course will assess your individual language level and
decide which course suits you best:
A1 Level: This language course is designed for students with very
little or no knowledge of the German language. It focuses on basic
vocabulary and grammar skills as well as speaking activities with the
help of small dialogues, games and role plays. Students will learn to use
basic expressions taken from a range of everyday topics, they will
understand short sentences and texts and will be able to cope with
simple everyday and professional situations such as introducing
themselves, making contact at university and work, visits and travels or
food, drink and shopping.
A2 Level: This language course is aimed at students who have
already mastered level A1 in German. It focuses on consolidating and
extending your basic vocabulary and grammar and enhance your
language competencies. On the basis of a wide range of speaking
activities, reading material and listening and writing exercises you will
develop all four language skills and gain confidence in the use of already
acquired language patterns. Among other things, topics such as
qualifications, jobs and experience, the German job market, free time
and interests, housing and living as well as cultural issues will be
covered.
B1 Level: This language course is intended for students who have
successfully acquired elementary language skills in German at A2 level.
It focuses on topics essential for living and studying in Germany and
aims at increasing your confidence in language use at a more advanced
level. After the course you will be able to deal with most situations
typically encountered in the context of everyday life, work and study
when clear standard language is used and the focus is on familiar
issues. The course includes topics such as professional life, working in
teams, media, advertising and marketing, learning for life, societal and
cultural issues, making presentations.
