ST JAMES MEN’S MINISTRY

Wow, what an experience, all groups came together to celebrate the end of the year with Eucharist followed by a BBQ with the lot. Fr Jude invited every man to share their experience and so they did. Even the visitors had something to share.

The groups have bonded so well and share at a deep level resulting in positive life changing experiences. Colin Bracken said: “I belong to a group of four and we support and bond so well that we look forward to our meetings with enthusiasm and keenness. We discuss everything with openness and honesty. Although a small group we walk away knowing that the Spirit has touched us. Our minds have been blessed and refreshed as we await our next meeting. On Monday night we all sensed a deep belonging and felt safe. The Spirit was truly amongst us. What I find beautiful is the different cultural reactions to the Catholic faith. These men are able to reach out expressing their own commitment to the group and God. It truly is an amazing experience.”

The men will miss not meeting over the Christmas break but are looking forward to meeting again in 2018.

Peter O’Toole, Men’s Ministry Coordinator

GOSPEL REFLECTION

The Gospel to conclude the Church’s year appropriately evokes the great judgment instituted by the Shepherd-King at the end of time. The Christian tradition, especially in art (Michelangelo’s painting in the Sistine Chapel) and music (Dies Irae), has often depicted the

scene in terrifying literalness.

We may not today feel bound to such a literal understanding of imagery and motifs taken from the apocalyptic Jewish worldview of Jesus’ day. But we have to recognize that what the Gospel wishes to communicate with great seriousness is that the final outcome of one’s existence is irreversibly determined by the attitude and action one adopts in regard to

fellow human beings here and now.

Nothing is said about correctness of faith, or the need to be free from, or to have obtained forgiveness for, all kinds of sin. The sole determinant is whether one has acted with care and compassion for people in various situations of need. Here the “greatest commandment of the law”—the twin love of God and of one’s neighbour (22:36-40)—and the sense of Jesus as “Emmanuel” (“God with us” [1:23]) receives its most radical extension. The one who sits upon the throne as Judge, has so identified with even “the least” of his “brothers and sisters” that effective compassion shown or not shown to them has been shown

or not shown to him.

There is no need to wait for the Son of Man to come in judgment; every time one encounters a fellow human being in need one already stands before the Judge and King.

Fr Brendan Byrne SJ

Next weekend is the beginning of Advent and the start of the new Liturgical Year, known as Year B, the Year of Mark. Many of the Gospel readings will now focus on the Gospel of Mark.

Additionally, the Australian Bishops have identified the Liturgical Year of 2018 as a national Year of Youth. The theme chosen is ‘Anointed and Sent’. The Year of Youth invites the church into dialogue about the importance and life giving presence of young people in the church and society.
