From the PrincipalDear Parents

Thanks to all of our parents who are acting responsibly while dropping off or picking up students each day at school. A small number are putting our students at risk and this is totally unacceptable.

From next week the staff car park at Emma Street and Mona Vale Rd will be blocked by Traffic Cones, parents who continue to put students at risk will have their vehicle details taken and reported to Police.

Gonski 2.0 Last week I wrote to the community about the withdrawal of $645 thousand dollars in funding to Mona Vale students over the next 2 years. The school Executive are currently looking at the impact on school programs particularly in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy support for our most needy students. The 13 Peninsula Community of Schools, Principals, are shocked by the withdrawal of the commitment to fund Gonski over the term of the agreement and will be working with our respective communities to have the Federal Government review this decision. I would again like to thank our State Local Member, Rob Stokes for his commitment to having the Federal Government honour the Gonski Agreement.

Music @ MonaYesterday I had the pleasure of listening to our Training Band comprising of 70 students who received their instruments earlier this year. They were fantastic and it was a pleasure to see the excitement and enjoyment on their faces as they played for an audience of teachers. I’m truly proud of our Music program at Mona and our commitment through an hour of dedicated music teaching by a Music specialist is paying huge dividends.

From the Principal

Premiers Reading ChallengeReading is a key focus of our planning to ensure students have the necessary skills to cope in a ever changing world. Each year we participate in the Premiers Reading Challenge as another strategy to support students acquisition of reading skills. I encourage all parents to support this initiative and encourage your child to participate. Thanks also to our fantastic Librarian Mrs Charmayne Hodgman who coordinates this program.

Student AbsencesJust a reminder that all student absences must also be in writing even if you have called the office or informed the teacher verbally. The school sends a reminder regarding all absences that are not supported by a written explanation as part of our legal requirement. Thank you for your prompt attention to this requirement.

Fight on the BeachesFight on the Beaches is run by a number of Mona Vale mums who have a goal of raising $250 000 for cancer research this year through the ‘Christmas in July’ Charity Ball, held at Miramare Gardens on Friday 28th July. For it to be a success again this year, we need volunteers who are keen to assist in the fight for a cancer cure. You would be required from 5:00pm-midnight with dinner and drinks provided.

It is a fabulous night, and a great way for you to make a difference.

We also need prize donations from local businesses wanting to do their bit to fight back against cancer, while benefiting from excellent promotion both on and offline through our social media channels, website and on the night in our Event Program and AV presentation. Please contact Michelle Heaton-Armstrong on [email protected] or call 0405 699 140.

We have had such an amazing response from the MVPS community over the past 4 years, thank you in advance for your continued support.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Welcome to the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is available to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.

The 2017 Challenge kicked off Monday 6th March and closes Friday 25th August (midnight) for students.

Students who have completed the Challenge receive a special certificate at the end of the year.

At MVPS we are well underway. Teachers K-2 and Support Classes have read their first batch of books (supplied and recorded by the library) and have nearly read their second batch. The library does the data entry for these classes.

For 3-6 classes students have begun recording books they have read since completing the last Challenge - a PRC data sheet has been provided to assist students with this. In library classes we have started data entry demonstrations. Parents and Carers can help their children with PRC data entry task at home.

Teachers are helping to promote the Challenge by encouraging home reading of PRC books, making the time for students to read PRC titles in class and assisting the children in their classes to do PRC data entry.

Logon Instructions: Google: NSW PRC 2017https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Assistance with the Challenge If you need help on how to do the Challenge or navigate the website:Refer to the PRC Support site and Rules-if you can’t find the answer on the PRC Support site, please contact the class teacher for help

Thank you for your support and happy reading.Charmayne Hodgman

Live Life Well

Fundamental Movement Skills

There is evidence that children with poor fundamental movement skills such as jumping, skipping, leaping, kicking, throwing and catching are less likely to be active. Give your kids a head start and teach them these skills.

Ideas to get your family moving:• Go outside and play chasing, ride bikes or throw a ball or

a Frisbee.• Encourage children to make their own obstacle course

at home. You could use garden hoses as tight-ropes, chairs to crawl under, and the clothes line to run around. Include a skipping rope and some jumping. For variety ask them to walk backwards, hop or skip through the obstacle course. Time them to see how they are improving.

• Encourage your child to play outside whenever possible. Play along whenever you can.

• Be a good role model – be active when you’re with children. What gets children moving is what parents do, not what they say. Children learn by example!

• Include games and walks in family outings.• Negotiate a time limit on sedentary activities such as

watching TV and playing computer games.• Walking together is a good time to talk to children about

their lives and yours.• Be prepared, think about activities your family can do in

and around your home. Have some plans for wet days.

Kindergarten News

Kindergarten’s ChicksFor the past 2 weeks, Kindergarten have been caring for and observing the growth of baby chickens. This program is part of our Science unit, Living Things. All the Kindergarten students have been able to observe, hold and care for the chicks throughout their first 2 weeks of life. The students all saw a chicken hatch from its egg and each class named one of the 12 chickens! This program has been fabulous for Kindergarten as well as the rest of the school, with many classes and students coming for a cuddle. Congratulations, Kindergarten. You were fantastic carers!

Wanted - Crazy Kindergarten AnimalsAnimals of all shapes and sizes, of all colours and from around the world, are wanted for a special day of fun!

Come dressed up as an animal to the kinder ANIMAL DAY.

When: Thursday 8th June 2017Where: Mona Vale Public School

This term, Kindergarten students will be participating in an Animal Day. This day will be part of the Kindergarten science topic, ‘Living Things’. Please note, that students must be dressed up in animal costumes that are not fantasy or magical as this day is to support our science unit.

Tips from the Learning and Support Team…

#1 LEARNING TO READ STARTS AT HOME As a parent, your role in helping your child learn to read begins from the time they are born. From these earliest moments you talk to your child, sing them songs and read them stories. They listen to you talking to them and others. They listen to the television, the radio, an iPad etc. They see and hear you reading shopping lists, cards, emails, newspapers and books. These early experiences with language help to develop reading skills and strategies when starting school.

Reading to your child at home …

⇒ fosters a love of books and reading

⇒ develops their imagination

⇒ models language patterns and structures

⇒ models how reading should sound

⇒ develops concepts of print e.g. how to hold a book, which way to

read, matching text to pictures etc.

⇒ connects spoken language to written language

⇒ expands a child’s vocabulary

⇒ develops early comprehension skills such as predicting,

summarising, questioning, visualising etc.

⇒ introduces story grammar – characters, setting, plot etc.

⇒ models features of literary and factual texts

⇒ builds an understanding of concepts such as good vs. evil (fairy

tales); fair vs. unfair etc.

⇒ equates to quality time spent with your child

⇒ connects children to themselves, their families and the world

Page 18: Mona Vale Mail€¦ · social media channels, website and on the night in our Event Program and AV presentation. Please contact Michelle Heaton-Armstrong on fightonthebeaches@gmail.com

“Reading is the Open Sesame for acquiring knowledge: learn to read, and you can read to learn just about anything. But learning to read is a complex matter that begins long before a child starts school. In fact, researchers now know that the foundation for reading lies in the oral language children are exposed to and develop in the first three years of life” (Hart & Risley, 1995)

Call for volunteers

In Primary Ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully

and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or

peer pressure.

We are very fortunate at MVPS to have a dedicated group of volunteers who together

deliver 16 classes each week during the Scripture/Ethics time (Tuesday mornings)!

We have classes for all levels now, and we are in need of a few more volunteers to

join the team.

You do not need any prior teaching experience. Ethics Teachers receive full training

by Primary Ethics, which consists of a two day workshop and short online modules.

Curriculum and access to teaching resources is provided. At MVPS, a classroom

teacher is present during the classes.

Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and developing their

critical thinking skills and must be available on Tuesday mornings each week during

school terms. Currently on the team we have both parents and members of the

community external to MVPS who like working with children.

Children discuss topics such as:

- imagining how others feel

- how do we treat living things?

- what is laziness?

- how can we disagree in a respectful way?

- fairness

Please visit www.primaryethics.com.au for more information on the curriculum &

what being a teacher involves.

If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school

and this sounds like something you might be interested in, please contact Anina Rich

(Primary Ethics Volunteer coordinator @ MVPS) at [email protected] or

0424833741. Please also forward this information to anyone you think might be

suitable for these positions.
