Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year C

First Reading: Exodus 17: 8-13 The first reading presents a scene where Moses prayed for success in battle for the people of Israel. Moses takes the posture of arms raised in prayer. When he tired and his arms dropped, the battle turned against God’s people. However, Moses did not have to persist alone as Aaron and Hur aid him ensuring success.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3: 14 - 4: 2 Persistence and consistency continues as a theme through the second reading where Paul encourages Timothy to draw on Scripture in all situations such that he can remain ever fruitful, both in good times and bad.

Gospel: Luke 18: 1-8 Jesus holds up a widow as a model in perseverance in petitionary prayer. To persevere, especially against the odds as the widow does in Jesus’ parable, is not easy, but important for life in general and especially so in prayer.

‘GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE’ Rejoice and Exult

69. This spiritual poverty is closely linked to what Saint Ignatius of Loyola calls “holy indifference”, which brings us to a radiant interior freedom: “We need to train ourselves to be indifferent in our attitude to all created things, in all that is permitted to our free will and not forbidden; so that on our part, we do not set our hearts on good health rather than bad, riches rather than poverty, honour rather than dishonour, a long life rather than a short one, and so in all the rest”.

70. Luke does not speak of poverty “of spirit” but simply of those who are “poor” (cf. Lk 6:20). In this way, he too invites us to live a plain and austere life. He calls us to share in the life of those most in need, the life lived by the Apostles, and ultimately to configure ourselves to Jesus who, though rich, “made himself poor” (2 Cor 8:9).

Being poor of heart: that is holiness.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”

A VOCATION VIEW: If faith can move mountains,

it can remove hardness of heart. Faith does move mountains, so faith removes mountains also. May

the Lord reveal His saving power in your life.

SATURDAY 26th OCTOBER 11.30am

To be followed by a light lunch

This October marks 60 years since the St Vincent de Paul Society started functioning in Sunnybank under the care of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. In that time there have been many members of this parish who have been involved, either through active participation or through willingly giving of money, food and other contributions which have allowed our conference to continue to serve the community around Sunnybank.

We would love to see you all at this celebratory mass to thank God for allowing us to serve in this way and to thank all volunteers and those who have given to support us, past and present. If you would like to come and participate in the mass and then join us in a light lunch please reply to [email protected] or add your name to the list at the back of the church.

Young Adults were fortunate to have The Mind Guy during

Mental Health Week to break open some understanding and tools

related to breaking isolation (especially in digital era), time

management, increasing sociability, reaching out to others

(eg:100 cup challenge), wellness and self care, to name but a

few. The light-hearted presentation style was very engaging and

live exercises and tasks furthered the bond between the group.

Being a teenager in this digital era is no mean feat. We

had a heart-warming session with our teens to help

them understand that the only way to be truly free and

happy is to be yourself, and how that requires being

vulnerable, honest and understanding HOW God loves

and sees us. It was a profoundly liberating night!

Thank you dear community for your overwhelming generosity towards the

special collection we did for the 6 pilgrims travelling to Perth this year for

ACYF. We hit our target bang on with approximately $3000 banked so far. With

per head cost being about $1100, we wanted to help raise at least $500 each.

Thank you for helping us accomplish this over just two days! God bless!
