LIVING THE GOSPEL OF LIFE: A CHALLENGE TO AMERICAN CATHOLICS We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportuni-ty meaningfully to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public forum. Every vote counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power. We must exercise that power in ways that defend human life, especially those of God’s children who are unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable. We get the public officials we deserve. Their virtue –or lack thereof—is a judgment not only on them, but on us. Because of this, we urge our fellow citizens to see beyond party

politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest. - A Statement by the Catholic Bishops of the United States

BECOMING CATHOLIC Want to enrich your family?

Want to stimulate your marriage? Want to meet new people?

Want to join a small Christian Community?

Christian Family Movement (CFM) may be just what you are looking for. The CFM is a network of small faith-sharing groups. A typical group consists of 5-7 couples or about a dozen parents meeting once a month for study and conversation. They follow a timely program which focuses on issues that encompass the home, church and community. CFM is for all ages and stages - couples, parents, developing families, blended and one parent families, middle years couples, empty nesters and grandparents. To learn more, please contact Deacon Gary and Kay Aitchison at 296-2966 or [email protected].

CHRISTIAN FAMILY MOVEMENT

“Catholics at the Crossroads: Why Catholics Leave the Church and What Should be Done About It” will be presented by Fr. Robin Ryan, professor at the Catholic Theological Church in Chicago, at 7:00PM on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and Catholic Student Center at ISU in Ames. He will discuss recent findings about active participation in the life of the Church, and the challenge posed by the growing number of former Catholics, especially millennials, who no longer identify with the Church. His lecture is funded by the Mgsr. Sup-ple lecture series. All are welcome. For more information, contact Fr. Jon Seda at 515-292-3810 or [email protected].

If we want to know what Jesus’ parable is about in today’s gospel, it seems that we don’t need to work too hard because Saint Luke tells us right at the beginning: “Jesus told his disciples a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart.” This parable has often been used to bring comfort to us about our prayer life. But could there be a more challenging message for those who take stewardship seriously? Widows were the poorest and most vulnerable of people in Jesus’ time. Oppressive legal and economic structures were the norm. Could it be that we are also encouraged to pray persistently for the poor, the weak and the vulnerable as we hear their cry for justice? And that we must not lose heart that we can effect change in their lives?

STEWARDSHIP: Today’s theme is perseverance—Moses keep-ing his hands upraised throughout the battle, Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of preaching and teaching, and the widow appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of God’s gifts, we, too, must persevere in the roles to which we are called.

Giving opportunity for Tuition Assistance. As we begin the Fall schedules we find there is an ongoing need for Tuition Assistance contributions to assist families with tuition for the school, for faith formation and for youth ministry. With the educational opportunities we have at St. Cecilia, it is a blessing to see so many families wanting to help their children grow in their faith. Some families, however, experience financial setbacks from time to time and really appreciate the assistance we offer to help them. Simply mark your contribution according to the area of education you desire when you send it into the office. Thank you for considering a contribution to the assistance program.

OCTOBER RESPECT FOR LIFE MONTH

Archbishop Jackels recently communicated that “For every right there is a corresponding duty. And so we also have a duty to vote. The Catholic Church even speaks of a moral obligation to vote. We also have a duty to inform ourselves about issues so as to vote consci-entiously. Everyone guides his or her choices by something. For Catholics, that something should be the teachings of Christ and his church.” To assist individuals to exercise their right to vote, the Archdiocese has gathered resources on faithful citizenship from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic Bishops of Iowa and the Iowa Catholic Conference. These resources can be found by visiting DBQArch.org/FaithfulCitizenship.

Like the Son of God himself, we are the kind of beings who are, “begotten, not made”… USCCB Reproductive Technology.
