  • Authentic leadership The authentic leader brings people together around a shared purpose and empowers them to step up and lead authentically in order to create value for all stakeholders Bill George (2007) http://christopherfeld.wordpress.com/2011/02/05/becoming-an-authentic-leader/George was CEO and then Chairman, from 1990 to 2002, of Medtronic, a world class medical technology company

  • CrucibleHis research revealed an interesting common theme (study of 125 leaders) .

Most of these successful leaders had been powerfully impacted by what he called a crucible, a signal event or challenging situation in their lives that set them on a clear path of purpose. http://www.888fulcrum.com/true-north/

  • CrucibleFor example, Howard Schultz, his father lose his job as a delivery driver because he broke his ankle. -- > build a company that treated its employees well, with solid health benefits, insurance.

Oprah Winfrey , memories of her own abuse life. -- > She discovered her broader mission: to empower peopleespecially womenall over the world.

  • For Nelson Mandela, it was during his long incarceration on Robbins Island when he realized that his leadership purpose, his True North, was not about the I of getting people to follow him but rather the WE for the independent of South Africa.Crucible

  • The Journey : I to WEIsnt it ironic that the heros journey that a leader takes from I to WE end in a higher state of development where he realizes that its not about being a hero at all!

  • The JourneyThis journey leaders has three phases:

Phase I, typically up to roughly age 30In Phase II, from about 30 to 60 years of agePhase III, has us really giving back: coaching, mentoring and encouraging other leaders, serving on boards of not-for-profit organizations, and others

  • The Internal CompassBill George uses the metaphor of compass direction, it comes as no surprise that he provides a compass to keep us focused on our own True North.

  • Self-Awareness. One doesnt typically become self-aware, if ever, until middle age. DAVE POTTRUCK
