The 2012 Australian Model Expo was again a resounding success,

clearly demonstrating that the event continues to grow in popularity from year to year. Celebrating its 29th year in 2012, the event even exceeded the organiser’s expectations, by setting a number of new records for both public attendance and modeller’s participation. Over 240 competitors entered in excess 670 models in the competition, with many travelling from all over the country to attend. This year also attracted a number of overseas

competitors as well, who travelled from as far afield as Poland, the USA, French Polynesia, Singapore and New Zealand, and is an indication that the event is beginning to gain international recognition.

Public attendance over the three days was also in excess of 6000 plus, with the number of families again being very much in evidence. This bodes well for the future success of the event, which will ensure its continued longevity. Trader participation - and the demand for available space - was also very high, to the extent that bookings had to be closed 6 weeks prior to the event, something which has never occurred before in the events history. Again this ensured that there was plenty on offer to seduce even the hardiest shopper and make them part with their hard earned dollars.

The number of clubs and individuals displaying at this years event was also at an all time high – 21 in total – with a significant number being first-timers. A number of these had also gone to considerable lengths to create themed displays in the hope of winning the much coveted, ‘Best

Club Display’ award. This year’s award went to an individual displayer - Geoff Manicolo - for his magnificent ‘Garage’ display, which attracted a lot of interest and admiring onlookers. Others of note were the ‘Matchbox’ display by the Waverley Scale Modellers Club, ‘The Aviatrix’ display by SPASM and the ‘IPMS Model Eggspo’ display, which was a light-hearted look at the event and brought a smile to many faces.

The competition entries as always were again to a very high standard and the stand-outs this year were (from Poland) Andrzej Ziober’s amazing 1/72 scale Airfix, Avro Lancaster, which won 1st in the Small Scale Aircraft, Modified category as well as ‘Best of Show’ and ‘People’s Choice’, and Craig Chirgwin’s 1/8 scale Pocher, 1932 Alfa Romeo Monza Muletto, which won 1st in the Cars Large, including Competition Cars category as well as the ‘Automotive Modelling Excellence’ award. If this is the standard of entries to be expected in the future, then the challenge has already been set. Also of note were the high number of entries in both the Junior and Intermediate categories, which is positive sign and bodes well for the future of the hobby.

Planning is now well underway for the 2013 Australian Model Expo, which will celebrate the events 30th Anniversary. This will take place over the long-weekend in June - Queens Birthday – and again will provide both the public and modellers alike, with a great showcase of modelling interests.

Dear Model Expo competition entrant and fellow modeller,

Thank you for making Model Expo 2012 such a wonderful success. This year’s event attracted a good number of entries and more visitors than at any time throughout it’s 29 year history.

Model Expo is a joint initiative of model clubs across Australia. It provides a unique opportunity for modellers and enthusiasts of all interests and skill levels to share their ideas, knowledge and enjoyment of plastic and scale modelling. The Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships provide a wonderful spectacle for the wider community to learn more about the art of modelling and how they can participate in this most interesting hobby.

Model Expo 2013 is fast approaching and should be the events biggest and brightest yet. Following on from the success of this year, Model Expo 2013 will benefit greatly from increased participation of clubs, the model industry and sponsors.

The vision and mission provides a framework, that will ensure the ongoing success of Model Expo and the Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships for many years to come.

The mission: Model Expo’s mission is to create a greater awareness among the wider and modelling community of the benefits and opportunities provided by plastic and scale modelling.

through a major national event that: • provides a greater recognition of the opportunities (professional and recreational) provided by plastic and scale modelling • provides a competition for the widest variety of plastic and scale model categories • provides recognition of the skills and talents of individual modellers and clubs by the modelling and wider community • Provides the opportunity for plastic and scale modelling to be recognised as part of the wider arts community, and • provides the opportunity for participation and enjoyment by model club members, individuals and visitors

Model Expo 2013 will be held at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, June 9-10, so bring your friends and join us in making Model Expo 2013 a great success for modellers, clubs, sponsors and visitors alike.

MODEL EXPO TURNS 30 IN 2013Model Expo 2013 celebrates the30th running of the largest plastic and scale modelling competition and expo in Australia.The competition covers all categories including aircraft, military models, cars, trucks, and sci-fi. Junior and intermediate modellers are also catered for. Kit distributors and retailers will show latest releases along with model club displays.
