Dear Model Expo competition entrant and fellow modeller,
Thank you for making Model Expo 2009 such a wonderful success. This year’s event attracted a good number of entries and more visitors than at any time throughout it’s 27 year history.
Model Expo is a joint initiative of model clubs across Australia. It provides a unique opportunity for modellers and enthusiasts of all interests and skill levels to share their ideas, knowledge and enjoyment of plastic and scale modelling. The Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships provide a wonderful spectacle for the wider community to learn more about the art of modelling and how they can participate in this most interesting hobby.
Model Expo 2010 is fast approaching and should be the events biggest and brightest yet. Following on from the success of this year, Model Expo 2010 will benefit greatly from increased participation of clubs, the model industry and sponsors.
The vision and mission provides a framework, that will ensure the ongoing success of Model Expo and the Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships for many years to come.
The vision: To promote the art of plastic and scale modelling
The mission: Model Expo’s mission is to create a greater awareness among the wider and modelling community of the benefits and opportunities provided by plastic and scale modelling.
through a major national event that: • provides a greater recognition of the opportunities (professional and recreational) provided by plastic and scale modelling • provides a competition for the widest variety of plastic and scale model categories • provides recognition of the skills and talents of individual modellers and clubs by the modelling and wider community • Provides the opportunity for plastic and scale modelling to be recognised as part of the wider arts community, and • provides the opportunity for participation and enjoyment by model club members, individuals and visitors
Model Expo 2010 will be held at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, June 5-7, so bring your friends and join us in making Model Expo 2010 a great success for modellers, clubs, sponsors and visitors alike.

Model Expo 2009 traders and sponsors
Cover: Dickson Oh’s vignette titled ‘Operation Varsity’ which won Best of Show deservedly takes prime position along with other first place awarded models from Model Expo 2009.
It was a great relief to learn that the 2009 Model Expo would once again be a 3 day event
and take place over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June, which inevitably contributed to it being the biggest and best show to date. It was also my first as the new Model Expo Director having taken over the helm from Laurence Farrugia at the conclusion of the 2008 event.
From the outset the early indications were that this year’s Model Expo was likely to surpass
anything that we’d organised before, due to the unprecedented number of inquiries we’d received from traders and modelling clubs, wishing to participate and secure space. This resulted in a record number of traders (28) and themed club displays (12) with the venue – the Sandown
Entertainment Centre – being filled to capacity. It also justified our decision to relocate the Swap & Sell – held on the Monday morning – to a room located above the main venue, which offered far more space and will also allow for further expansion in the future. A large number of sellers (50) were again on hand at the Swap & Sell, which attracted a record crowd of punters, eager to spend their money in the hunt for that elusive bargain.
Of course Model Expo would be nothing without the competition and the continued support of the competitors, who attended in larger than expected numbers (215) with representatives travelling from almost every state in Australia (ACT, NSW, QLD SA and WA) as well as New Zealand. This resulted in the second highest number of entries on record (637) and presented the judges with the unenviable task of having to decide the winners. Without exception the standard of competition entries was again very high across the board, with some categories - not previously well supported - seeing a significant boost in numbers, all of which contributed to demonstrating the diverse nature of our hobby.
The show was further enhanced by the participating clubs, all of whom had gone to considerable lengths to present uniquely themed display’s, demonstrating to the public that our hobby can be both entertaining as well as informative. This was also complemented by the numerous modelling demonstrations, which were conducted throughout the entire weekend.
Although I received many words of congratulations for the manner in which this year’s Model Expo was organised and conducted, it would be foolish of me to assume that it went off without a hitch. However we – the committee - always endeavour to identify any problems as they occur and provide a solution wherever possible. As a consequence everything pertaining to Model Expo is reviewed from year to year, to ensure that it reflects the latest trends and to make the show as pleasurable an experience as possible, for all.
Whilst reflecting on the success of this year’s Model Expo, it can be attributed to a number of factors. The first is the continued dedication of the Model Expo committee who work tirelessly throughout the year to make sure the event happens. Secondly the continued and growing support from our traders and sponsors who are an integral part of the
whole show experience and thirdly the competitors and public who continue to attend the show in ever increasing numbers year after year. As a consequence of all of this Model Expo – The Australian Open Plastic and Scale Model Championships – has now firmly become recognised as the premier modelling event in the country and long may this continue.
I hope to see you all at the next Model Expo, to be held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June 2010.
