Introduction
There is no ideal DEM. DEM generation techniques can not capture the full
complexity of a surface. There is always a sampling problem and a
representation problem.o Continuous Surface ⇒ Discrete Surface ⇒ Continuous
Surface.
Surface Characteristics
Functional Surfaces: Store a single z value for any given X,Y location. Represent continuous surfaces. Referred to as 2.5 dimensional surfaces.
Solid Models: True 3 dimensional models capable of storing multiple
Z values for any given (X, Y) location. Capable of representing discontinuous surfaces. Examples: Machine parts, highway structures,
buildings.
Surface Characteristics
Surface Continuity: Continuous Surface: If you approach a given X, Y
location on a functional surface from any direction, you will get the same Z value.
Solid models are capable of storing more than one Z value for a given (X, Y) location (discontinuous surfaces).
Surface CharacteristicsSurface Smoothness: In addition to being continuous, a smooth surface
has the additional property that regardless of the direction from which you approach a given point on the surface, the surface normal is constant.
Geologically young terrain have sharp ridges and valleys. In contrast, older terrain are smoothed by weathering forces.
REMEMBER
Our objectives. Reality (continuous surface) digital/discrete
representation.oEstablished through a sampling process.
Digital representation Reality (at least our best guess of reality).oEstablished through interpolation process.
Data Models In DTMA surface model should: Accurately represent the surface. Be suitable for efficient data collection. Minimize data storage requirements. Maximize data handling efficiency. Be suitable for surface analysis.

Define surface model Contours Grid (Raster DTM) TIN (TIN DTM)
Defining the interpolation technique Global Point-wise Patch-wise
Contour Lines
Contour Line: points with constant elevation. Dense information along the contour line. Hardly any information across the contour
line.
Effect Of Grid Size On Surface Representation
Sampling interval will affect: Amount of details captured (accuracy). Amount of storage (redundancy, efficiency).
Optimum sampling interval depends on the nature of the terrain.
Properties Of Grid Based DtmsAdvantages: Simple data structures (similar to a digital image). Capability of applying most of array processing techniques. Already have grid DEM with no further processing.
Disadvantages: Inefficient sampling. The highest or lowest points on the landscape are rarely sampled. Difficult to integrate break lines. Large space requirement for data storage. Reconstructing the surface requires the need for solving large
equation systems.
Triangulated Irregular NetworkTIN
Surface divided in irregular elemental planes The corners are terrain characteristics Sampling density of interesting points (peaks, pits etc.)
TIN Characteristics
Each points is A node Delaunay criteria Inside the circle through 3 nodes there is no
other node
Linear interpolation between points within each triangle Slope and aspect in each triangle is constant
Tins In Vector GIS
3 vertices with height attributes3 edges with slope/direction attributespolygons with slope, aspect and area attributes
TIN Based DTMs
Each Vertex must have the following information (attributes): Height. Connectivity information (how are the vertices
connected to each other to form the TIN). Surface normal (perpendicular to the tangent at the
surface).oFor vertices along break lines, we need to have two
surface normals.
You can force the triangle legs to coincide with the break lines.
Raster Versus TIN Surface Models
Raster DTM Elevation data are available at equally spaced
grid points.
TIN Elevation data are available at irregular points
that are connected by triangle legs. The TIN is generated in such a way that the
summation of the lengths of the triangle legs is minimum.
TIN Generation
Objective: Define a network of triangles through the
reference points.Criterion: The summation of the lengths of the triangle
legs is minimum. Some techniques: Delauny Triangulation. Radial sweep algorithm
