Coffee Grinding Tips• Use the correct grind for the brew

process you are using. 16 grinds areavailable from “Fine” to “Coarse.”“Fine” can be used for espresso,“Medium” is appropriate forautomatic drip coffee makers, and“Coarse” is suited to French Pressbrewing. Experiment – your tastesmay be better served by using aslightly finer or coarser grind.

• When adjusting to a finer grind, itmay be easier to turn the grind-adjustment ring while the grinder isrunning.

• For drip coffee makers, a goodstarting point is to grind 1 ounce ofcoffee for every 4 cups of brewwater as measured with the carafe(a carafe “cup” is about 41⁄4 ounces).Finer grinds require less coffee, buttoo fine a grind could cause anoverflow in the brew basket of thecoffee maker.

• Ground coffee loses flavor andaroma quickly. For best results, grindonly as much coffee as you intendto use immediately.

• To preserve the freshness of coffeebeans, keep beans in an opaque, airtight container and store them ina cool, dry place. Refrigeration is notrecommended, as condensationtends to form on the beanswhenever the container is opened.Freezing can help preserve beansstored for an extended period, but itwill also impair the flavor.NOTE: Grind frozen beansimmediately upon removal from thefreezer. If beans begin to thaw from afrozen state, condensation will formon the beans and the moisture mayclog both the grinds and the mill.

• Grinding flavored coffee beans isnot recommended – they will impartan off-taste to any other coffee thatis ground in the mill, and may causethe burrs to clog.

• Do not grind spices. The Coffee Millis intended for grinding wholecoffee beans only.

9

How the Grind Affects FlavorThe flavor of coffee depends on avariety of factors, including thequality, freshness, and roast of thebeans, the purity of the brew water, the cleanliness of the brewingequipment, and the brewingtemperature. The fineness andconsistency of the grind is also critical.

Coffee that is ground too fine for aparticular brewing process – using toofine of a grind in a drip coffee maker, for example – will result in the brewwater over-extracting the oils andaromatic compounds in the coffee, yielding a brew that is extremelypungent and bitter.

Conversely, coffee that is toocoarsely ground for a particularprocess will result in the under-extraction of the oils and essences, resulting in a very thin and weakflavor.

The consistency of the grind is alsoan important factor in the flavor ofcoffee. If the grounds are uniform, equal amounts of soluble compoundswill be extracted from each. If thegrounds vary in size, some will beover-extracted and some will beunder-extracted, leading to extremelypoor quality.

The Model A-9® Coffee Mill uses apair of stainless steel cutting burrs togrind coffee with precision. This helpsensure that your coffee is the best itcan be.

4. Wash the bean hopper, lid, andglass in hot soapy water.

5. Dry all parts thoroughly beforeattaching them to the Coffee Mill.

NOTE: The bean hopper, bean hopperlid, and measuring glass are dishwashersafe, but repeated dishwasher cleaningmay cause the graduated markings onthe measuring glass to fade.

Cleaning the Cutting Burrs

If the mill is used frequently, thecutting burrs need to be cleaned everyfew weeks for best performance.Cleaning enables the burrs to achievethe most consistent grinds possible.Without regular cleaning, the mill mayclog, which could cause damage tothe Coffee Mill.

Foreign objects – like pebbles ortwigs – sometimes find their way intowhole bean coffee. These objects maycause the mill to jam. If this happens, follow the burr-cleaning procedure toremove the foreign material.

To clean the removable burrs:

1. Empty the bean hopper andremove from the base.

2. Locate the removable-burr set screwon the back of the Coffee Mill.

3. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, turn the set screw counter-clockwise to loosen, and remove.

Page 13: MODEL A-9 COFFEE MILL - SmallAppliance.com...Model A-9® Coffee Mill Operation Before First Use Wash the bean hopper, bean hopper lid, and measuring glass in hot, soapy water. Rinse

2. Place the grind-adjustment ringonto the motor housing. Press andturn the grind-adjustment ringclockwise several rotations until thegear offers complete resistance, then rotate it counterclockwiseuntil the selection arrow alignswith the initial “M” for theMedium grind selection.

3. Replace the set screw and tightenwith the Phillips-head screwdriver.Your Coffee Mill is now ready for use.

11

4. Turn the grind-adjustment ringcounterclockwise several completerotations, and remove it from thebase.

5. Lift the burr-shaft assembly out ofthe motor housing.

6. Using the cleaning tool, clean theburr mounted on the burr-shaftassembly and the burr mountedunderneath the grind-adjustmentring.

NOTE: Never wash the burrs or burr-shaft assembly in water. Keep themdry at all times.

5. Insert the burr-shaft assembly intothe motor housing and attach thegrind-adjustment ring. Forinstructions, see “To reassemble”,page 11, steps 1-3.

Replacing the Cutting Burrs

If the cutting burrs are damaged, orhave reached the end of their life(usually after grinding 600-800 lbs. ofcoffee), they can be easily replaced.

Contact KitchenAid at 1-800-541-6390 to order a set ofreplacement burrs.
