The Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers form a delta as they flow into what large arm of the

    Indian Ocean?

Know the answer? If so, you had a shot in this year's Missouri Geographic Bee, held at Moberly

Area Community College on Friday (April 5).

Aviral Misra, the son of Anil and Niru Misra, of Leawood, Kan., and an fifth grader at AcademyMontessori Internationale, in Kansas City, Mo., knew that said aquatic arm was the "Bay of

Bengal," and secured himself $100, a gold medal, a copy of "The Complete National Geographic" on

DVD, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C., to compete for the National Geographic

Bee's 25th title, in a competition held between May 20 and 22 of this year.

"My background is from India," Misra told the MMI, immediately following his win over runner-up

Shimon Likhtman (Parkway Central Middle School, Chesterfield, Mo.), in a sudden-death final round

Friday afternoon. "Everyone in my family always talks about the Ganges."

The top 10 national finalists in 2013, along with last year's top 10, will also be eligible for selection

to the three-person team that will represent the United States of America in the National

Geographic World Championship, held in July, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Misra and his family have been to the nation's capital two times before this, he said. When asked

what he was most looking forward to this time around, he said: "Everything."

The welcome and overview for the event was held in the MACC auditorium, and presented by

Missouri Geographic Bee Coordinator Tim Hill. Dr. Evelyn E. Jorgenson, MACC President, and Jack

Langen, 2012 Missouri Geographic Bee champion, were special guests at the event, and provided

greetings to the crowd following Hill.

Preliminary competitions took place in MACC's Blue Room and Student Commons (both in the Main

Building), in C14 Career Center, at H10 Komar Hall, and at H36 Komar Hall.

Refreshments were provided just prior to tiebreaker rounds in the student commons.

The gathered crowd and 10 finalists met back in the auditorium for final and championship rounds,

    moderated by Wally Pfeffer.
