The recent scorching weather that hit our state was no way to deter our ever dedicated administrators and teachers to carry out activities and special func-tions as scheduled in the school calen-dar.

This 10-page issue featured all the ac-tivities we had in school for the month of March and April. Credit goes to all teachers who had contributed in this

issue in spite of their tight schedules on top of prepa-ration for the Mid-Year Exam Papers.

My apologies for not be-ing able to include the Ex-am Timetables in this issue due to technical problems. However, students had received their exam timeta-bles from the Form Teachers.

Chinese New Year

With festive spirit, Maktab Nasional cele-

brated Chinese New Year of the Sheep

on Friday, February 27, 2015.

Principal, Mr. Alexander Funk, delivered

his special Chinese New Year message to

begin the whole day program in the

morning.

The presence of our former principal.

Mdm Winnie Voo, Mr Jason Soon, Datin

Mimie Ang Chui Mee, Ms Monica Chua,

and Mdm Mary Lojinon-Naun had made

the event more significant for Maktab.

As tradition, the MN Teachers kicked off

the entertainment session by singing the

favorite Chinese New Year Song, “Gong

Xi Gong Xi” followed by our students

mesmerized the audience with their fasci-

nating and melodious voices. Our young

friends from SRS Datuk Simon Fung, had

come over to add in more colors to our

program, they amazed us with their

graceful dances as they sang their Chinese

New Year songs.

Among many items held that day, the

Chinese New Year Card Decoration

Competition, Calligraphy Competition,

Eating Mandarin Orange Competition,

Fashion Show Competition, Transfer-

ring Beans With Chopsticks Competi-

tion, and quizzes based on Chinese

New Year were also given in between

performances and competitions.

To conclude the celebration of the day,

students returned to their respective

classrooms for open-house accompa-

nied with their class teachers and the

guests and parents, to the Conference

Room for reception. The Best Deco-

rated Classroom 2015 was awarded to

Form 1 Joy.

The much awaited Lion Dance Perfor-

mance had to be postponed to the

following Monday as the lion troop was

caught in a traffic jam. Congratulations

to the organizing committee for such

an eventful celebration.

This year the citizens of Maktab Nasional were privileged to witness how democra-

cy functions in a society albeit one as small as our school.

In the earlier part of the year, we man-aged to form two separate political par-

ties; The Council party led by Kevyn Lee Jia Wen (4 Modesty) and Student Council Association party led by Dexter Lee

Chun Yew (4 Prudence).

Both parties and their cabinet ministers

campaigned for a little more than a week to gain the confidence and votes from the

student community. Campaign posters and banners were put up and many

speeches and lobbying were done much like the real thing for adults. The students

showed a lot of gusto and enthusiasm for the exercise which was aimed to give

them a taste of how it’s done in the real world.

Finally on Election Day March 4th, all cam-paign materials had to be removed and the school looked “normal” again. Stu-

dents were called down from their clas-ses to cast their votes and place the bal-

lot paper in a ballot box that was later removed for counting.

The final results for the 2015 MN Gen-eral Elections are The Council Party won

in a landslide victory to garner 70% of the votes. Thus, the new Student Council for

2015 will be formed by Kevyn Lee Jia Wen. Our heartiest congratulations to

the party!

Student Council members are as follows:

Chief Minister: Kevyn Lee Jia Wen

Deputy Chief Minister: Ameerjeet Chahal

Political Secretary: Tan Wen Hui

Minister of Finance: Kathryna Haw

Minister of Education: Shafaq Iqbal

Minister of Sports: Brian Tan

Minister of Works: Ian Cheng

Minister of Health: Howie Liew

Minister of Culture: Mohd Nazim Ajit Manan

Minister of Information: Ryan Lim

Traditionally, the opposition party will form a shadow government to observe and check

if the Council is doing what it had promised to do during the election campaign.

A parliament sitting will be held sometime in June/July to report on activities done and

debate about issues concerning student wel-fare. An interesting spectacle not to be

missed! Alexander Funk

On the 8th of April 2015, the school, under the supervision of the teacher in-charge, the

school prefects and the student council organized the annual Installation. This formal func-

tion is to officially install the school leaders. They are the Class Leaders, the Presidents of

Clubs, Games and Uniform Bodies, the Librarians, the Student Council and the School

Prefects.

The Guest of Honour for this function was Madam Eleanor Cheng. Madam Winnie Voo,

as member of the Board of Governors, was also present. The leaders of the school were

given their badges and also officially received their duties as leaders. The members of the

Prefect and Student Council also recited their oath as school leaders.

Madam Eleanor reminded students who are not installed as leaders that they are leaders

too in their own way because leaders are people who inspire others to do better. Every-

one has a task as unique as their fingerprint.

Our guest of Honour did read this poem:

If each note of music were to say:

One note does not make a symphony,

There would be no symphony.

If each word were to say:

One word does not make a book,

There would be no book.

If each brick were to say:

One brick does not make a wall

There would be no house.

If each drop of water were to say:

One drop does not make an ocean,

There would be no ocean.

If each seed were to say:

One grain does not make a field of corn,

There would be no harvest.

If each of us music were to say:

One act of love cannot save mankind,

There would never be justice and peace on Earth.

Begin now, why are you waiting?

In conjunction with the Easter Season, on

the 6th to 10th of April, 2015, the Chris-

tians teachers of Maktab Nasional organ-

ised the first ever Easter Egg Hunt in our

school.

On Wednesday, April 8, 2015, MN stu-

dents together with the SRS Primary 6

students had a great time doing the Easter

egg hunt. Our teachers hid 280 nicely

decorated and wrapped eggs around the

school compound before the hunting game

began. Some eggs were hidden between

flower pots, among flowers and behind

stones. The search was not as simple as

one thought. The fast runner usually

picked up the egg first. However, all had

enjoyed the egg hunt and the excitement

lingered on for some time.

One of the Primary 6 students got the high-

est number of eggs and became the winner

of the 2015 Easter Egg Hunt Competition.

As the egg symbolizes a new life, may each

and everyone be grateful of the new life

around us.

A big thank to all the students who had vol-

unteered to help Teacher Janet in the eggs

decorations before the special event.

Let’s look forward for another exciting

Easter egg hunt next year.

actual competition. Our basketball teams

need exposure and lots of trainings in order to boost up their confidence. Building up

their stamina as well as to exercise their techniques and coordination as a team are

very necessary for them to perform better.

May our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams not only are strong and fearless but also well-

disciplined. They have to know that when-ever and wherever they play, they are a re-

flection of the school.

Congratulations to Maktab Nasional Bas-

ketball teams for giving us another rea-son to be happy as they won against

their opponents from the Kota Kinabalu International School during a friendly

match at our school basketball court on

the 13th March of 2015. Our Girls’ Bas-ketball team excelled with a score of 24-

14 and our Boys’ Basketball team, 28-17.

Maktab Nasional welcomes neighboring

schools to compete with our Basketball teams either to a friendly match or in an
