The workshop always starts with a multimodal technical tour, but how can you begin to understand the complexity of transit in the New York metropolitan ar ea in only a day? For that reason a two d ay tour of the Tri-State region is planned for Saturday, July 24, and Sunday, July 25. The  Multimodal Tour of the Tri-State Region will provide transit professionals with a unique passenger’s-eye perspective of how different modal systems function and interact. D DA AY Y O ON NE E sets out winding its way through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Central Long Island on a combination of subways, automated guideway transit, commuter trains and a local bus to Port  Jefferson, where we’ll cross the Long Island Sound to Bridgeport CT. In Connecticut, we’ll trace the New England coast aboard another commuter train and Amtrak’s Acela high-speed inter-city train to New London, where a second ferry will convey us back across the Sound. The day finishes with a short local bus trip followed by a commuter train ride the length of Lon g Island back to Manhattan . We’ll visit five major intermodal transportation centers along the way. DA AY Y T TW WO O starts north, looping through Upper Manhattan and the Bronx on subway and commuter trains, passing through the grandeur of Grand Central Terminal before turning west to New Jersey via a privately-oper ated joint bus-ferry se rvice. Upon land fall, we’ll make a whirlwind circuit of North Jersey and Southern New York via multiple light rail, rail rapid transit and commuter trains, as well as local bus, bus rapid transit and a monorail, stopping at seven more intermodal transportation centers enroute.  The detailed itinerary is described on the reverse side. There is no charge for the  Multimodal Tour of the Tri-State Region other than your fares and meals. Participation e ach day is limited to 40 pe ople. Sign up for either day or both—or for just part of a day if you’d like. Contact Houston METRO’s Tom Hickey at TH14@RIDEMETRO.ORG to reserve your space or for further de tails.
