MMC CorpComprehensive Coverage for an Unparalleled Construction Experience

While initially specializing in plumbing and heating in Kansas City, MMC Corp has expanded to manage complex construction operations across the United States. With their employees often in the fi eld, they require airtight safety procedures and coverage. MMC Corp employees sometimes work hundreds of feet in the air on new projects. They navigate around unforgiving steel beams weighing tons, and they regularly install large mechanical equipment. The company wants to protect these employees while ensuring every project gets done right, on budget, and on time.

“We have many employees out in the fi eld and that can be potentially dangerous,” said Dave Cimpl, MMC Corp’s Chief Financial Offi cer. “Safety is huge to our organization, and Lockton has helped us develop our safety programs. They were very instrumental in designing and rolling them out to our offi ces and jobsites.”

For more than 35 years, MMC Corp’s leadership team and Lockton have cultivated a trusting relationship that helps drive MMC Corp’s operations. Lockton provides weekly counsel on how to identify exposures and controls, conducts training demonstrations at offi ces, and at times serves as a fi rst point of contact for questions or issues.

“They are a valued business partner and continue to meet and exceed all of our expectations,” said Tom Sanders, Chairman of MMC Corp’s board of directors, and grandson of the company’s founder.

Founded in 1932, MMC Corp is a

commercial construction services

company with four core construction

services brands: MW Builders

(general construction), MMC

Contractors (mechanical construction),

Countywide Mechanical Systems

(mechanical construction), and

Stroh Construction (mechanical and

electrical construction). MMC Corp

When the business relationship began in the early 1980s, the organization was growing as a mechanical contracting company into other areas of construction. Simultaneously, Lockton was growing its specialty in construction. After a meeting between Sanders and Jack Lockton, the late founder of Lockton Companies, the relationship between MMC Corp and Lockton developed.

“Jack had two important philosophies that Lockton continues today,” Sanders explained. “First, the clients’ needs were number one. Second, hire the best people in the business. Jack was a unique individual who created a unique agency, and they have been invaluable to MMC Corp and its subsidiaries.”

Lockton began helping MMC Corp secure bonds and surety credit for their business while providing general liability coverage. Today, MMC Corp has moved all risk management work to Lockton. Advising MMC Corp has included advocacy at a critical time in its history when the company’s business was struggling. Lockton stood up for MMC Corp when surety markets might have withdrawn vital bonding capacity.

“Lockton going to bat for MMC Corp was a very big part of the success of that meeting,” explained Cimpl. “It could have been a pivotal point in our company’s history, and Lockton was there at the table with us.”

Currently, Lockton reviews MW Builders’ contracts (the general contracting arm of MMC Corp); structures the insurance programs; surveys the market; and negotiates terms and conditions for the full range of insurance coverage, including builder’s risk, specialty coverages, fl ood, and earthquake. Lockton’s relationships with carriers help MMC Corp get the best and most cost-effective coverage, supporting MMC Corp’s efforts to win more work from their clients.

MMC Corp executives and Lockton team members collaborate on

critical business issues . . . and occasionally on the golf course. The

relationship between the two companies runs beyond the board

room and has been built on more than 30 years of trust.

“Lockton’s guidance, support, and advocacy have been keys to our growth, as has their astute management of our account,” said Sanders. “They created solutions that put a lot of money on our bottom line. It’s not an accident that Lockton is the largest private broker in the world. They’ve been able to do that by taking care of the client.”

Before MMC Corp acquired Countywide (a mechanical construction brand in San Diego, Calif.), Lockton assisted with evaluating Countywide’s workers’ compensation experience and gauging the fi t with MMC Corp. Lockton has also worked to help lower MMC Corp’s experience modifi cation rate (EMR), reducing the cost of workers’ compensation coverage.

“We’ve stayed with Lockton because of the expertise they have brought to the table,” said Cimpl. “They have always been proactive with new ideas, explaining why renewals are going to come in a certain way, and helping us design self-insured risk retention program that have worked very well for our organization.”

Lockton’s long-time advocacy on behalf of MMC Corp has produced an active, engaged partnership. MMC Corp invites their Lockton colleagues to company events, such as golf outings and barbeques, where greetings typically feature hugs instead of handshakes. MMC Corp even threw a retirement party for their long-time Lockton account executive, exhibiting a relationship that’s more like an extended family than just a business.

“The same culture they have today goes back to when founder Jack Lockton considered clients being friends,” said Sanders. “It’s not about numbers; it’s about thinking what’s next beyond a request, knowing you and your business, and anticipating your needs.”
