Course Title: Tool Sharpening (Drills and Chisels)

Date, Time & Location of Course:

Friday 6th October, 15.00 – 17.00 (F18) Newport 1

Course Duration: 2 Hours

Course Content: As a follow-on to the abrasive wheel certification course, this will start by covering in the correct sharpening of HSS, TCT and similar twist drills. We will not be using any form of jig or tool as it is most unlikely any such luxuries will be available on site when they are most needed. It will look at and discuss drill design and how to get the most out of what is a very basic tool in the locksmith armoury. Attendees are encouraged to bring along a couple or so of your own drills that require attention so we can first study them and discuss what needs to be done to get more useful life out of what are expensive tools which are a joy to use when efficient and a desperate enemy when wrongly sharpened or blunt. The course will then move on to look at chisels. A well sharpened and honed chisel is a joy to use but is one of the tools most frequently blunted or damaged in use by the locksmith. Hidden nails and screws in the door or frame just where you are working being among the worst culprits! How to restore the cutting edge without removing the temper of the steel or re-hardening and tempering the steel when the tool has been softened in the regrinding process is useful information to have in your armoury to keep your chisels in tip top condition.

Course Tutor: Peter Field

Peter Field is Director of Research at Medeco Security Locks in Salem VA USA. Peter started locksmithing in 1960 at the age of 12 while living in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. He paid his way through college working part time for a large locksmith in Champaign Illinois. The lockshop covered a 50 mile radius serving Industrial, Commercial and Residential customers with solutions for doors, vehicles, safes, electronic access systems and alarms. Seven years after leaving the University, he was still working full time for the locksmith, and teaching classes for the local association. In 1977 Medeco asked him to design and develop a training program for locksmiths to explain how to service a Medeco cylinder and to illustrate the differences between a high security lock and a common pin tumbler cylinder. Peter joined Medeco as Training Instructor in 1978. Over the years his titles have changed to Director of Training, Technical Support Manager, Key Records Manager, Director of Training and Research, and Director of Research. Peter has had twenty two US Patents issued pertaining to locks and has several more patents pending. Peter is a life member of ALOA, a life member of The Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners, a member of the MLA UK and honorary member of several national European locksmith associations. He has chaired the committee of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association that developed a national standard for High Security Cylinders. Peter continues to develop and instruct classes about locks and to encourage other locksmiths to share their knowledge. He is known for his ability to disassemble, cut open and photograph the insides of cylinders so that their operation can be clearly understood.

Course Title: High Security Cylinders – a forensic view

MLA Expo 17 featuring The Garage - Training Information (V3) Page 12

Course Duration: 2.5 Hours

Course Content: The class, updated since its last outing in 2015 is a 2.5 hour presentation where we will look at numerous different lock cylinders from around the world and compare the elements that go together to make them “high security”. These are the elements that a lock inventor or engineer choose, modify and arrange when they design new cylinders. It is not a hands-on class, but is a lecture type of class with photos of the cylinders and their components. Most of the pictures are close-up photos of the cylinder parts, and there are macro-photography of cut-away cylinders to clearly show their operation. After the class, a locksmith should be able to identify the various components in a lock cylinder, understand which elements of those components make one lock more secure than another, and be able analyse a new lock cylinder they have never seen before to determine its relative security value.

Usually this is presented as a full day class, but to fit into the schedule, it has been shortened to 2.5 hours. Peter holds the copyright on all the photos used in the class, and plans someday to publish them in a book. He asks therefore that attendees do not take photographs of his work during the class.
