We are very excited to be returning to the Sunshine Coast for our major event for 2015.
The event is less than three months away and we would love to see you all there.
The theme for this year is “hands on” and we have asked our trade partners to take this into consideration when designing their booths, and to make your experience when you visit them an interactive one.
We have a number of business-themed training sessions on offer. Jeremy Phillips will be presenting a couple of automotive information sessions, including an advanced cloner review.
For the first time in a number of years we will be running sessions to help you understand and interpret the Building Codes, and in a first for the MLA we are offering sessions to help business owners better understand workplace based assessments for apprentices.
Peter Ryan, our Industrial Relations consultant, has been reviewing the information we have on our website. Peter will be talking about industrial relations and guiding you through the new information on the website so you know how to find it. This is a must attend session for business owners and managers.
We are delighted that Stuart Johnson has agreed to interviewed for the second of our Through the Keyhole sessions.
We don’t want you to leave the resort for the duration of the event and we have scheduled the activities with this in mind.
The Golf Day make its return in 2015, with an 18 hole competition to kick off at 12noon on the Thursday at the fabulous Twin Waters Golf Course.
The AGM will start at 7.00pm on the Thursday night. This is a little later than in previous years, but it will allow more time for people to get to the venue, especially those based in and around Brisbane who are heading to Twin Waters after work.
Our Keynote Speaker is Tom Potter, founder of Eagle Boys Dial-a-Pizza. You can read more about Tom in this booklet.
There will be a BBQ and drinks in the Trade Exhibition area on the Friday night from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. This allows delegates and exhibitors to relax together over a few drinks.
Master of Ceremonies Kerry “Nigel” Domann will ensure our Gala Dinner and Awards Night on the Saturday is one to remember. If you don’t know who “Nigel” is check out his bio a little further on.
Conferences are about lots of different things, and whether you are catching up with industry colleagues, learning some new skills, having a holiday with the family or playing a round of golf, we strongly encourage you to come to Twin Waters.
On behalf of your Board and the team at Head Office, I look forward to seeing you in October.

Rodney Loschiavo was one of Australia’s best safe manipulators, and the runner up to Michael Maloney is our inaugural Safe Manipulation Challenge winner last year.
Sadly we lost Rod in February this year, but with the blessing of Rod’s wife Jan and daughter Amanda, we are delighted to be able to name this challenge event after Rodney.
This challenge event highlights the tremendous skill that safe manipulators have. We will have three similar sized safes, fitted with a brand new S&G 3 wheel combination lock. Competitors will have 45 minutes to open the safe. If time allows, competitors can have up to 3 attempts.
The person with the best time will be deemed the winner and will be presented with a special trophy and a cheque for $500.
Do you think you have what it takes to be crowned the King of Lishi? Originally launched as an Immotech event, the MLA and LSC are proud to bring you this prestigious event at the Twin Waters Conference. Come and test yourself against the very best, in the 2015 Asia Pacific round. The current standings are New Zealand in first place, so come on Aussies - we can’t let that go unchallenged!
We will be joined by International Lishi trainer & instructor Pan Huiyi, and there will be a generous prize for the winner, and of course International bragging rights go along with the crown.

Advanced Cloner Review
It’s a couple of years since we had a review of cloning equipment on the market today, and there have been some major changes, both in the devices and the keys they need to work with.
This session will take a comprehensive look at the various cloners available today. We’ll put them through their paces and give you the results! For the first time, this year we‘ll split the devices into Basic and Advanced categories for a more accurate assessment.
The Basic category will compare the Silca RW4, the JMA TRS5000EVO, the Keyline 884 and the all new 884 Mini – and one new entry, the wireless and handheld, “Handy Baby”. This category will focus on key cloning. The Advanced category will contrast the IEA ZedFULL, LockDecoders MiraClone, Scorpio Tango, and the TMPro2 and will focus on key production. Should be an interesting head to head – come see how it pans out!
Presenter: Jeremy Phillips
Cracking the Code to Workplace Based Evidence
Government changes have put pressure on the traditional model of apprenticeships. In reaction to this many trades are moving to workplace-based assessments. Locksmithing lends itself to workplace-based assessment more than most trades. The number and variety of tasks that are done by an apprentice locksmith, if documented correctly, could significantly reduce amount of time your apprentice spends at TAFE doing tasks that they are already competent at.
Understanding the unit descriptors, gathering the evidence and documenting it can be a total mystery to many employers. In this session, we will teach you how to crack the code.
This hands-on hour workshop will cover a range of suitable evidence gathering tools. Participants will be able to identify workplace activities and match them to units of competency. This workshop will also show how the evidence provided can be authenticated and validated.
The benefits to your business are:• Maximising the time of your apprentice in your workplace• Increasing the likely retention of your apprentice• Enabling your apprentice to focus on any identified skills gaps• Your apprentice gaining the skills that support the needs of your business
Presenters: Max Cherry and Aaron Smith
Business Sessions cont.Health and Safety Compliance Kept Simple
In this session we will be covering three key health and safety topics:
• Meeting Commercial Clients’ health and safety requirements and expectations;• Using basic Risk Management to ensure good health and safety outcomes; and• The importance of engaged workers.
The presentation content will include:
• Health and safety legal requirements in plain language:- Simply put, what do you need to do;• Risk Assessment (Safe Work Method Statements): What does a risk assessment look like and how do we do one?
(A risk assessment for working at height will be work-shopped by the group).• Cost and time effective ways of getting your team members on board with health and safety.
This session will be delivered in a workshop format, with a focus on discussing the knowledge and needs of the group, and allowing for questions and input from the participants in conducting a risk assessment for the SWMS. Following the presentation, a number of resources will be made available on the MLA Members internet, for use by members.
Presenter: Rachel Gerber from Help in Safety
Your ABC Guide to understanding the BCA
Locksmiths are regularly in situations where they need to know about the Building Codes. Putting the wrong type of lock on a door can expose a business to unnecessary risk, and in the worst case scenario, you could face legal action.
The MLA’s very own BCA Junkie, Walter Mioch, is passionate about Building Codes. Walter will be supported by Guy O’Neill, and participants are encouraged to ask questions about specific situations they have been faced with.
• Do you know what the 200 square meter rules is?• What is the relationship between the DDA and the BCA? • Are pharmacies really exempt?• What are the requirements when doing work in Child Care Centres?• Can Lockwood 001’s really be installed as a secondary lock on an apartment entry door?• When can you install a deadlock on a door that has an exit sign above it?
Even if you think you know all there is to know about the BCA you will get something out of this important and informative session.
Presenters: Walter Mioch & Guy O’Neill
Invest in Auto
Automotive Locksmithing is a tricky area for businesses to invest in. There is profit to be made, but there are a lot of choices to make and many pitfalls to avoid.
In session we will discuss the current market, and highlight some possible ways to attack it. We will talk about the common problems associated with this field, such as staff retention, product investment and on-going training.
Come ready with questions as we will also have a Q&A time.
Presenter: Jeremy Phillips
Keynote Speaker - Tom Potter
Master of Ceremonies - Kerry ‘Nigel’ Domann
Tom Potter, founder of Australian owned Eagle Boys Pizza, left school at 15 and found himself jobless at 23. He opened his first pizza shop in Albury, New South Wales in 1987 and proceeded to build the business to become Australia and New Zealand’s largest privately owned pizza company.
Tom built Eagle Boys to become one of Australia’s home-grown retail and franchise successes, through radical change, innovation and at times unusual business and marketing tactics.
Along the way, Eagle Boys won various National Franchising Awards and Tom was awarded with the Australian Financial Review’s Young Business Person of the Year.
Tom is one of Australia’s most outstanding retailers, entrepreneurs and inspirational leaders and his straightforward, no nonsense approach endears audiences to be inspired to change and cut through the clutter to achieve higher results at all levels.
Kerry Domann or his alter-ego, “Nigel” is a multi-talented entertainer who enthralls audiences with magic and comedy.
It’s Nigel’s amazing ability to use his memory that really sets him apart. This unique combinaton of business savvy, comedy, memory and interactive magic, must be seen in acton to be believed.
It’s sure to leave your audience intrigued and entertained.
Apart from his work as an entertainer, Kerry has over 20 years experience in corporate business industries. The last eight years in the Financial markets industry as a Quantative Analyst, the nerds of any trading floor and Interest Rate Specialist.
Prior to this he worked in IT as a network supervisor, programmer and system analyst and spent over five years in superannuation.
He’s truly one of Australia’s best entertainers.
If you’re a final year apprentice (or finishing your apprenticeship) in 2015, we encourgae you to test yourself and participate in this prestigious Award.
Participants will sit a revamped exam that will certainly be a true test of an apprentice’s skills across
all locksmith disciplines. ABUS, Silca and LSC continue to be major supporters of the Award and once again
will reward the winner (and their Master) with a trip to Italy and Germany to visit the Silca & ABUS factories.
Testing will be throughout the month of September.
Email [email protected] for further information and entry forms.
We encourage business owners to get behind the Award and help promote the event to your
apprentices.
Through the Keyhole - Stuart JohnsonLSC has come a long way since Aubrey Findon Johnson established the company in 1926 and imported the first code cutting machine for cylinder keys to Australia.
Retired Managing Director and second generation wholesaler, and MLA Life Member, Stuart Johnson is well-known and highly respected in the locksmithing industry. Stuart regularly travelled throughout Australia early on his career, packing up the car with LSC’s latest wares, and on many occasions the family as well.
Stuart was a great believer in overseas travel, and like his father before him he travelled the world researching and absorbing everything he could about the locksmithing industry. His desire was to bring the very latest advancements to Australia for the locksmiths of Australia. Through Stuart’s efforts, LSC has been able to maintain and develop strong associations and partnerships with the locksmithing, security, building and hardware industries.
We invite you to come and hear Stuart reflect about his time in the industry and share some of his most memorable moments during a successful career spanning over 50 years.

2014 Winner Nic Smith
“I entered the competition
because I wanted to challenge myself & demonstrate what
skills I have to offer this industry.
Winning the competition meant more then just a certificate on the wall for me. It was a new
bench mark that has made me reach further and push harder to
achieve more as a locksmith”.
