Mithun

• Mithun also known as ‘cattle of the mountain’, is a large semi domesticated important bovine species of north east hilly region of India.

• Its distributed over northeast India, China, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh

• Some domesticated Gayals are partly colored or completely white.

• It is consider4ed to be a holy sacrificial animal to appease the Gods by tribesmen.

• Its possession is considered as a sign of superiority and prosperity and is also given as a bridal gift by families.

• The female is very fertile and can produce one calf a year producing upto 1.5kg milk per day.

MITHUN

• Its milk is nutritionally superior high in fats and proteins.• Mituns are wild and their ownership is marked by a cut on

the ear.• They are economically important for production of meat

and milk.• However large scale rearing of mithuns is not very

prevalent in hilly tribal zones.
