Also often just referred to as “Northwest,” Nob Hill is an excellent example of mixed-use planning with commercial main streets filled in with charming homes and flanked on the north by a shrinking industrial area.
The Mississippi area is a down-to-earth funky neighborhood filled with great music, art, shopping, and of course, food!
Williams/Vancouver is a historically working-class neighborhood now home to fine dining and eclectic shopping experiences.
Mississippi Avenue is near other streets named Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Massachusetts and Maryland.
Once north of Williams/Vancouver area, the city of Vanport housed people who built many of the ships that went into the Pacific Theater of WWII. A flood washed it away in less than a day in 1948.
Willams and Vancouver Avenues are exemplary streets for bicycle safety and utility since their redesign in 2014.
At NW 24th Ave. and Vaughn St., there once was a baseball stadium for the Portland Rosebuds - an African American League team owned by Olympic champion Jesse Owens.
In 1905, the area just north of Nob Hill was developed as the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition. It featured exhibits from all over the world, rivalled the World’s Fair model of attractions, and put Portland on the map as a commercial port city into the 20th century.
“Trendy-third” is the local term for the lively shopping district along 23rd street, with some of the finest boutique shopping in town.
Namesake of the street and founder of a Portland dynasty, Josiah Failing was, despite his name, quite successful as a merchant and within two years of arriving in Portland was almost elected mayor in 1853.
The Nob Hill area is also referred to as Slabtown. In the late 19th century, a large mill opened up in this neighborhood. Residents often fueled their homes with leftover slabs of wood from the mill.
Fred Armisen, of Portlandia fame, was asked by Jerry Seinfeld to take him to the epicenter of Portland in his episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. He took him to Mississippi Ave.
Fremont Street (and the nearby Fremont freeway bridge), coming off of Mississippi Ave., is named after John C. Fremont. Explorer, soldier, and politician, he was the first presidential candidate of the Republican Party.
The central portion of the Fremont Bridge near Mississippi Avenue was at the time of its construction in the early 1970s the heaviest thing ever lifted by humans at around 6,000 tons.
The streets in this area were originally platted alphabetically a-z by ship captain John Couch (pronounced cooch). Later, many were named after Portland personalities.
Northwest Portland is adjacent to Forest Park, a 5,200 acre reserve with 80 miles of trail. It’s an easy way to step from a commercial area to a natural world with opportunities for mountain biking, hiking, birdwatching, and tree-hugging.
Flanders, Kearney, Lovejoy, and Quimby all gave their names to characters in the Simpsons TV show, created by Portlander Matt Groening.
The Columbia Gorge Model Railway Club is one of the largest of its kind in the West.(2505 N Vancouver Ave.)
The cupola that now sits in Dawson Park was once atop the Hill Block building, an important gathering place for African-American Portlanders from the 1940s through the 1960s.
The southern end of Mississippi Ave. hosts Widmer Brothers Brewing Co., one of Portland’s earliest and most widely distributed microbreweries.

An alternative to even the most alternative neighborhoods, Killingsworth/Alberta boasts some of the most avant garde arts and community elements in Portland.
Hawthorne/Belmont is the counterculture capital of Portland, Hawthorne Blvd. being often compared to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood in San Francisco.
Division is a vibrant modern neighborhood on the east side with many hip places to sip, chomp, and chill.
Alberta was once called “the most killing street in Portland” by a television reporter in 1997, making it one of Portland’s redevelopment success stories.
Mt. Tabor City Park is a sprawling urban jewel with views of downtown from the East. A volcano, one can now play basketball in a court in the crater.
Peacock Lane is ground zero for Christmas decorations every holiday season, and has been since 1929.
Visible from most points on the main street, the historic Bagdad Theater is still playing films as it has since 1927.
Hawthorne Blvd. is named after Dr. Hawthorne. For many years he ran the Oregon Hospital - an insane asylum near 12th Avenue.
Cartopia, the food cart pod at 12th and Hawthorne, was a big part of the major food cart explosion of the 2008 recession. They still have great food today!
Ladd’s Addition was designed by banker/investor William Ladd, who specifically forbade future developments in his addition from including streetcar accomodations.
The Clinton Street Theater is home to one of the longest-running cult film phenomena in the world, playing The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday since 1978.
The area south of Division was very nearly developed into the infamous “Mt. Hood Freeway,” instead of the thriving neighborhoods we see today. The funds were eventully used for our first MAX light-rail system.
Division Street is part of an ongoing development program, whose designers are well aware of its roots in Portland’s “Streetcar Era.” Walkability on Division is celebrated.
At SE 54th and Lincoln you can find the Lincoln Street Kayak and Canoe Museum - A collection of full-sized functional replicas of traditional Arctic hunting kayaks.
As recently as 1948, the Alberta Streetcar connected downtown to the Alberta area as it did many neighborhoods in a network rivalling that of San Francisco.
The Alberta Arts District is known for its ‘Last Thursday’ arts walks with more of a street art or renegade art feel. Join the naked clowns June, July, and August between 6 and 9 PM.
The Community Cycling Center on Alberta St. is a non-profit that realizes the potential for bikes in uniting the urban community of Portland.
Alberta Street was named in honor of the eponymous Canadian province in 1882. The name was chosen by one of the developers of that time, who was British.
Lone Fir Cemetary holds the grave of one of Portland’s founders - Asa Lovejoy as well as the beloved Dr. Hawthorne, a progressive and kind doctor of the mentally ill.
Movie Madness is a video rental store and movie museum, with actual movie props like the knife from Psycho, outfits from the Sound of Music, a head from Aliens and much, much more.
