WE'RE BACKOn July 14, 2016, the NCAA informed Mis-sissippi College that they had completed the three-year process to rejoin Division II and the Gulf South Conference, a league they were a member of from 1972-96. The Choctaws were members of Division III and the American Southwest Conference for 18 years, winning 31 conference championships over 17 NCAA-sponsored sports.

With the transition complete, all of MC's athletic teams are now eligible to win NCAA and GSC championships, as well as, winning team and individual awards.

The Choctaw football program celebrated success in Division II, winning three GSC championships (1979, 1988, 1990) and winning the national championship game in 1989. Over 26 years of competition, MC went 188-122-8 (.604) in conference play.

THE SERIESThis will be the third meeting between MC and Florida Tech, a member of Division II and affiliate football member of the Gulf South Conference. The Panthers have won the first two meetings, including a 44-9 victory in 2014 when the teams met in Florida.

LONG HAULThis Saturday's contest marks the longest road trip for the Choctaws this season, traveling over 12 hours and nearly 800 miles. However, over the following five weeks, MC will play four home games with the only road contest coming against in-state rival Delta State (Sep. 29). The other two road games for MC are against West Georgia (Oct. 22) and Shorter (Nov. 5).

GOING FOR NO. 1In 2014, the Choctaws began playing a full GSC schedule during their tran-sition back to Division II and the Gulf South Conference. In that time, MC is still searching for their first road and conference victory in the tough GSC. Last season, MC fell to West Alabama in the final road tilt of the season, missing a late field goal to lose 14-13 in Livingston.

CHART-TOPPERSAfter the opening week of play, the Choctaws are the top rushing team in the conference, posting 279 yards on the ground against Point. Josh Dixon is also tied for the GSC-lead with three total touchdowns and ranks second in rushing yards (131) after the first game.

THIRD YEARAs head coach John Bland enters his third season as the head coach at MC, he will head into his 12th sea-son as a head man. In his third year at Cumberlands (KY), the former Ar-kansas quarterback had his first dou-ble-digit wins season (10-2) and won the Mid-South Conference East Divi-sion championship, advancing to the second round of the NAIA playoffs.

WHAT'S NEXTThe Choctaws will return home for the next two games, starting with hosting West Alabama (Sep. 17) at 7:00 pm at Robinson-Hale Stadium. It will be a "White-Out" game for MC with players and fans decking out in all-white attire.

DID YOU KNOW?Over the past three seasons, the Choctaws are 3-0 when scoring 30 or more points in a game. Saturday's 28-16 win over Point was the first win for MC since 2012 when scoring few-er than 30 points. MC's last win when scoring less than 30 came in a 24-21 win over Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas on October 20th, 2012.

Offensive Player of the Week Chris Robinson, RB, Delta StateRobinson wins the award after rushing for 162 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the opening week win for the Statesmen. Robinson’s 162 yards on the ground are the most for any DSU player since the 2011 season. The junior was able to accomplish all of this on just 13 carries, averaging 12.5 yards every time he took a handoff. Robinson had a touchdown run of 67 yards, the longest rush in the conference this weekend.

Defensive Player of the Week Donte Robinson, LB, Valdosta StateVSU’s Robinson recorded six tackles on the week, and he was also grabbed two inter-ceptions in the Blazer win against Albany State. Both interceptions were timely, as one occurred when ASU was backed up inside its own 20-yard line, setting up the Blazers for their first touchdown of the night. The second interception stopped a scoring opportunity for the Golden Rams, who were inside the VSU red zone.

Special Teams Player of the Week Thomas Boone, P, Delta StateBoone did not have to punt often in the big win for the Statesmen, but he made it count when he did get on the field. Of his four punts, two were downed inside the 20-yard line. He also had one punt that was a booming 62 yards. Overall, he averaged 50.5 yards per punt.

Freshman of the Week Tim Bellinger, RB, West FloridaBellinger was playing in not only his first college game, but the first football game in the history of the University of West Florida. Bellinger will forever be in the record books, scoring the first touchdown in UWF history. He would add another touchdown later in the game. Bellinger rushed for more than 100 yards on the day, despite playing sparingly in the second half of the 45-0 victory for West Florida.

John BlandHEAD COACH

3RD SEASON AT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGEUNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS (1989)

On January 2, 2014, John Bland was announced as the 15th head football coach in Mississippi College history.

In 2015, the Choctaws took a big step forward, dropping their scoring differential from 27 points in 2014 to just seven points in 2015. MC opened the season with a 61-6 victory over Texas College and moved to 2-1 with a 42-21 victory over cross-town rival Belhaven on Sep-tember 19th. Seven Choctaws earned All-NCCAA honors, led by wide receiver Marcel Newson, who was a finalist for the C Spire Conerly Trophy, recognizing the top four-year college football player in the State of Mississippi.

In his first season at MC in 2014, he led the Choctaws in their first season back in NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference. Five Choctaws were named to the National Christian College Athletic As-sociation All-American list. The team rushed for 1,719 yards and 14 touchdowns in their first year running an option attack.

Bland came to Mississippi College after an eight-year career at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. There, he went 70-21 with five Mid-South Conference championships ('07, '08, '09, '10, '13). He was also named MSC Coach of the Year five times, while having 103 players earn all-conference selections in his tenure.

In 2013, the Patriots went 13-1 and advanced to the NAIA national championship game after being ranked #1 in the country for the final two weeks of the season. Cumberlands spent most of the season ranked as the #1 or #2 team in all of NAIA. The Patriots had one of the top offenses in the nation, leading all of NAIA in rushing offense (4,978 yards), rushing offense per game (355.6 ypg) and scoring (616 points). Cumberlands also led the nation in third-down conversion percentage (53.2%).

Prior to his time at Cumberlands, Bland spent five seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Rice University in Houston, Texas. In 2001, the Owls went 8-4, gaining the most wins at the school since the 1953

season. Rice ranked sixth in the nation in rushing in 2002, second in 2003 and led the country in 2004. The Owls' quarterbacks accounted for one-third of the team's rushing totals during that time and in 2003, his signal-caller was the first in school history to rush and pass for 2,000 yards in a career.

Before his five seasons at Rice, Bland coached at Division II Southern Arkansas University for seven years. He was an assistant coach from 1994-99 and was promoted to the head coach for the 2000 season. While with the Muleriders, the offense broke several school and con-ference records and led the Gulf South Conference in scoring in 1998 and 1999. In 1997, SAU won the GSC and were ranked 10th in the country.

Prior to his time at Southern Arkansas, Bland served as an assistant coach at Central High School in Columbia, Tenn. He was a graduate assistant under Pat Dye at Aubrn University and served as a student assistant at the University of Arkansas following his playing career.

Bland was a four-year letterman at the University of Arkansas as a quarterback. While in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks went to four straight bowl games, making appearances in the Holiday, Liberty, Or-ange and Cotton Bowls. He as named a permanent captain for the 1988 Southwest Conference Champions that compete in the Cotton Bowl.

Coach Bland holds a master's degree in Kinesiology from Auburn University and a bachelor's degree, also in Kinesiology, from the Uni-versity of Arkansas. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Bland is a graduate of Farragut High School where he was an All-State recipient playing at the quarterback and defensive back positions.

Coach Bland and his wife, Candis, have three children, Shreve, Jade, and Bo.
