It’s that time of year again. The Chautauqua County Humane Society, along with Media One Group, is preparing to launch the 10th annual Pennies 4 Paws campaign! PENNIES 4 PAWS 2015: ‘BUCKS 4 BUILDING’

Over the past six years, CCHS and our community has witnessed our save rate reach an unprecedented high of 96.55%, we reached a milestone of spaying and neutering 10,000 cats for low income individuals and families, and we have averaged around 1,200 adoptions per year. All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without the help and guidance from an active, knowledgeable Board of Directors.

Throughout the recent holiday season, the Chautauqua County Humane Society was showered with support and donations from our community. From a story of a 12 year old boy who wanted to give rather than receive to a group of dedicated, considerate college students, the animals at CCHS were feeling the love this year.

CCHS is so fortunate to have a community that thinks of us during this time of year. Being a not for profit organization, we live solely on the generous donations of our community and what we are able to accomplish here, is based on the commitment from our community.

Our first story is about Chase Jones, a determined, dedicated, and considerate 12 year old boy. This year for Christmas, instead of asking for gifts, because he already had everything he needed, he decided to give back. He went around to local businesses, friends, family, his school, his hockey team, etc. and collected items and monetary donations for the shelter. Go Chase!

Our next story involves two separate elementary schools within Chautauqua County. Students from Temple Elementary in Falconer, NY and Panama Central School in Panama, NY both held holiday gift exchanges. Instead of exchanging gifts with one another, they exchanged gifts for the animals. Those students have some pretty amazing teachers!

Every year, the Frewsburg Rest Home holds a bake sale and every year they choose a local charity to donate their proceeds to. This year CCHS was one of the few organizations they chose to donate to and we were so excited to give them a brief tour of the shelter when they stopped to visit!

Continuing their 4th year tradition, members from the Earth Awareness Club at Jamestown Community College, organized a Presents for Paws campaign at the college. They decorated a tree full of paw tags and each paw represents a different animal at CCHS. On the reverse side of the tag is a wish list item and the students are encouraged to purchase the item listed on the back of the tag.

These are just a few of the wonderful stories we witnessed here at CCHS during the holiday season and are truly thankful for all those who donated. Thank you to all for making it a more enjoyable holiday for our furry friends in need.

THE SEASON FOR GIVING

The 2015 ‘More Than a Shelter’ Capital Campaign is now underway and we are nearly ¾ of the way towards achieving our $750,000 goal, which will support our building and renovation project.

The project is expected to break ground in late spring 2015 and will entail two phases. Phase one will include a 2,000 square foot expansion to provide space for a new canine communal housing program, which will double CCHS’ canine capacity. The method of communal housing allows dogs the opportunity to live together in a well supervised environment, based on their play group personality types, rather than being isolated in a kennel. The arrangement reinforces their natural instincts, allowing them to be happier, healthier and more content while living in a shelter setting.

Phase two renovates specific areas of the current Strunk Road facility by adding an additional surgery room and prep room and expanding the recovery room. Redesigns will also include a new visitor welcome area with three private adoption stations and better access to the get acquainted rooms. Police and dog control officers will have 24-hour access and can now deliver stray and lost dogs to the Strunk Road facility. The remodel will use existing space more efficiently, which will increase the space for community education and events. This will allow for a better adoption experience.

Thanks to the generous support of many donors, including a $183,000 grant from the ASPCA, a $170,000 grant from the Lenna Foundation and an additional $100,000 grant from the R.C. Sheldon Foundation, the campaign has already raised more than $500,000.

If you would be interested in giving a gift towards our building and renovation project, there are many opportunities for donor recognition.

For more information or to discuss this campaign in greater detail, please contact Executive Director Jeff Lubi directly at [email protected] or by calling 716.665.2209 ext. 202.

The 2014 Walk 4 Paws had another successful and generous turnout! With the help of the community, sponsors, and volunteers, CCHS collected over $34,000 to benefit the animals in our care. Despite the weather conditions, over 300 people attended the event, held at the Chautauqua Institution on October 4th.

The top three teams and individuals were announced at the event and were then honored at a special event held at our Strunk Road location. Ellie Hartnagel was the first place individual, collecting $1,112 and Flarfy’s Family finished as the top team, raising $1,955. The pet costume winner was awarded to the pirate and his treasure. Tag Days money collection weekends, sponsorships, and other various donations contributed to the approximate $34,200 total.

This year’s lead sponsor was Jamestown Medical Imaging. Additional sponsors included Clark Patterson Lee Design Professionals, Greater

Chautauqua Federal Credit Union, UBS Financial Services, Shults Ford Lincoln Hyundai, Team Jock Shop, Fessenden, Laumer and DeAngelo, Alpha Dog Marketing, Southern Tier Financial, Truck-Lite, Invisible Fence of Erie, King’s Heating and Sheet Metal, Lewis & Lewis, PC, S.P. Bussman Design Co., Dog Speak at the Dog Place, Allied Alarm Services, Athenaeum Hotel, Lockwood Agency,

The Post Journal and 106.9 Kiss FM.

CCHS would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all those who volunteered and/or donated to the 2014 Walk 4 Paws. The success of the event was made possible by the sponsors and those that volunteered and went out and solicited donations. Without their help and the assistance of our community, this event would not be possible!

WALK 4 PAWS 2014 RECAP

Eagle Systems of Jamestown, Inc., has always been a strong supporter of CCHS and has provided us with our printers for the past several years. They recently upgraded our printer to an e Studio 6530c Toshiba, which is much more convenient and financially appropriate. The printer has helped us significantly in allowing us to print more documents in house, rather than having to go through a printing company. We sincerely thank the staff and management at Eagle Systems of Jamestown, Inc.

Here is a message from Eagle Systems Branch Manager, Pete Sorce:

Being that Eagle Systems is a local business whose staff were mostly all born and raised in Jamestown, serving the local community along with helping people and pets just comes naturally.

Eagle Systems further serves Chautauqua County residents by supporting the county itself in our role as its primary copier provider. Located in the heart of downtown Jamestown, Eagle Systems opened the doors to our state of the art facility in September of 2007. As community support has always been of importance to our corporate identity, Eagle Systems welcomes the opportunity to be able to support and be associated with the essential vital mission of the Chautauqua County Humane Society.

A MOMENT IN HISTORY

On January 9, 2015 CCHS celebrated our 110th birthday. Somewhere along our 110 year existence, the tangible trail of our history cannot be traced. I decided to take a trip down to the James Prendergast library in Jamestown to see if they held any of our most unique documents or held any significant images that could be used for future promotional use.

Although I could have spent an entire week researching, I only had a couple of hours to spare. I began looking through the library’s microfilm database, which can be a very tedious task. After about two hours, I finally stumbled upon the first article ever written about CCHS, formerly known as the Chautauqua County Branch of the ASPCA. This article was published in the Jamestown Evening Journal on Monday, January 9, 1905. It is slightly difficult to decipher, but if you look closely it reads:

S.C.P.A. Incorporated—Papers filed this morning legalizing the existence of the Chautauqua County branch.

Mayville, Jan. 9—The county clerk is this morning in receipt of papers for filing, incorporating the Chautauqua County branch of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the enforcement of all laws which now exist or may hereafter be enacted for such purpose. The principal office of the corporate body will be located at Jamestown and the directors are: Frederick W. Hyde [first vice president], William M. Hoffer [treasurer], Frank H. Mott [2nd vice president], James W. Butterfield [president] and Adelbert F. Jenks [secretary].

This piece, although minute in size, was very significant to our history and our hearts. If you have any historical documents or knowledge that you would like to share with us, please contact us at 716.665.2209 ext. 213 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Donors, supporters and shoppers,

HELLO! It’s me again — Piglet! After being written up for my poor attendance and lack of overall effort at 2nd Chances I thought I’d better put a little more effort into my newsletter column. So, I’ve got to tell you about a new and exciting project that 2nd Chances and the BOCES Hewes Center have begun.

Many of you may be aware that our two organizations have been partners for years through our E-scrapping volunteer work experience class. The students have done such an awesome job breaking down the computers in this class, that a new challenge was needed. So, as I lay across a scratched and unpainted coffee table it hit me like a bolt of lightning — let’s start a furniture refinishing class! I know, an incredible idea, right?

I’m so proud to announce the Hewes Center rEfinishing project! Get it — rEfinishing… we kind of have a theme here. Occasionally 2nd Chances obtains furniture that needs a little TLC. Although our store has grown over the years, so we have no space — or time — to take on projects like that. So this is a perfect match! For now, the students are focusing on simple sanding, painting and minor repairs: real wood — no fiber board repairs. No reupholstering — yet but who knows? In just the first month the students refinished 8 pieces of furniture!

So here’s my point: Isn’t it amazing how two seemingly different organizations can work so well together? The students at BOCES are learning new skills and the staff at 2nd Chances receives some help. The best part is that each piece of refinished furniture has sold for 3 – 4 times the original price that we would have initially received before the refinishing. That means so much more for the animals of Chautauqua County! It must also be noted that we sincerely thank all the staff and students at BOCES for all their hard and amazing work.

So, remember, we have great merchandise at 2nd Chances and every time you purchase something or donate items you are helping to support the homeless and needy animals of Chautauqua County! I might sleep a lot when I’m at work but I’m always thinking!!

That’s my point!!

Meowfully submitted,

Piglet
