A renovated church exhibition hall in Murrurundi is housing a local arts presentation. It’s the first of a series envisaged for the village blending art and history. The Murrurundi & District Historical Society has lovingly restored the old Presbyterian Church Hall with sloping floor and altar after years of neglect. The Drawing Room/Works on Paper show is now open with works from the group Murra Mods featuring Fran Wachtel, Charlotte Drake-Brockman, Pauleen Parker, Meredith Spencer-Lowe and its curator Jelle van den Berg.
More than 100 items and drawings are on view with several available for sale. The display will be open until March 31 every Saturday and Sunday at the hall next to the museum from 10am-1.00pm.
You can also view the display by appointment, please email Des Dugan, [email protected]

New space for Michael ReidIn 2017, Michael Reid Murrurundi will be expanding into a new exhibition space, to be constructed adjacent to the current gallery which was built within a former convict cell block in 2006.The new structure will be fashioned as a large agricultural ‘out-building’ to accompany the existing late-Georgian sandstone structures. In the building’s scale, the materials used and with such significant features as large steel sliding doors, it will appear as the working out-building of Bobadil House that looks like a wool shed.
The optical illusion is all on the exterior though. Inside, visitors will find an open and modern exhibition space of 162sqm dedicated to art. With no interior walls dividing the gallery, exhibitions can be viewed in one sweep. This will be one of the few art galleries built in regional New South Wales in a decade.

SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST: Naomi Norris (pictured above) owner of Brook Gallery in Muswellbrook embraces new mediums, but currently most of her work is acrylic or watercolour. Images are courtesy of Naomi Norris.
Teacher of artFor artist and gallery owner Naomi Norris, living in regional Australia has some big advantages when it comes to focusing on making art. “[You] can also get close to local landscapes, people and issues, all there to become subject matter for rural artists. Being somewhat isolated also means distracting fads can be missed and ideas can be developed in a more contained environment,” Ms Norris says.
The owner of Muswellbrook’s Brook Gallery is also a science teacher. She always looks for ways to include art in science and science in art. Ms Norris opened Brook Gallery to give local artists a chance to exhibit. Now she hopes it will become a place that locals will go to purchase gifts that are original and made by local artists.
Ms Norris would also like to see the gallery become known to travellers looking for a special momento of the Hunter Valley. Currently on offer are individual and small group art classes for children and adults including classes working with resin and the gallery is now a re-seller for Just Resin products for use in wall art, handmade homeware and jewellery.

“Run for Olivia”A four-kilometre ‘Fun Run’ and community markets will be held Saturday, 11 March 2017 at the Bill Rose Sports Complex in Scone to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD), an annual global event which recognises the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The community, sporting clubs, schools and families are invited to participate in the “Run for Olivia” IWD ‘Fun Run’ and help fundraise for The Olivia Inglis Foundation. The Foundation for young eventing riders was established in memory of teenager Olivia Inglis who tragically died at the 2016 Scone Horse Trials whilst competing.
At the initiative of the Scone Horse Trials Organising Committee and with the support of the Inglis family, Equestrian NSW has set up the Olivia Inglis Foundation to fund safety initiatives in the sport and provide training opportunities for young riders.
“The Scone Horse Trials Committee is very touched that the wider community has chosen to support the Olivia Inglis Foundation and would like to encourage sports and community groups, schools, pony clubs, pre-schools, families and friends to get behind this great initiative and Run for Olivia on 11 March,” said Councillor and Scone Horse Trials Vice President Kiwa Fisher. Donations can be made online via the Australian Sports Foundation at www.asf.org.au
Upper Hunter Shire Council is organising the Fun Run and market day which will include food stalls, live music and kids activities including laser tag and feature ‘Sparkles the Clown’.
Fun Run registration is only $5 per person or $10 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 kids under 12 years). All proceeds from registration fees goes towards the Olivia Inglis Foundation.
Registration to participate in the Fun Run and sponsorship forms are available at Council’s Administration Centre in Scone, Scone Sports Store and the Scone Visitor Information Centre, downloaded on Council’s website at http://upperhunter.nsw.gov.au/f.ashx/documents/Council/News/Fun-Run-Registration-Form.pdf or by emailing [email protected]

This year will be the 18th birthday for the Upper Hunter and Kia-Ora Youth Music Camp and 180 years since Scone was gazetted as a township, so a birthday celebration is underway. The 2017 Kia-Ora Youth Music Camp will be held 22 to 24 March 2017. During the popular annual event, hundreds of young performers will spend three days working and rehearsing with some amazing tutors and conductors, in preparation for a fi nale concert on the Friday night.
Highlights for 2017 will be the Amazing Voice competition, the Kawai Piano workshop and the Tyke-Oh Japanese Drumming program.
The camp is offered to students from years 3 through to year 12, from schools across the Upper Hunter Shire. It is an excellent opportunity for budding musicians, as well as those who wish to try something new in the creative arts area. There are even places available for students who have no previous background in voice, dance or instrumental tuition.
The music camp encourages young talent and motivates them to develop music in their lives by providing awards and scholarships.
A wide variety of enrolment options are available with classes on concert band, strings, choir, piano and the Amazing Voice Competition. Other electives include dance, Tyke-Oh Japanese drumming and marimbas.
Enrolments are now open and forms are available at all local schools and Council offi ces. Enrolling early ensures the best chance of students getting their fi rst preference of electives. For more information about enrolment contact Community Services Offi cer Amanda Catzikiris, 6540 1153.
Another opportunity provided to students of all ages was having a go at designing a logo for the Kia Ora Music Camp birthday celebrations. The top design came from Holly Almond in year 9 at Scone High School, whose inspiration was the confetti emoji. “It’s crazy to think that the logo I designed will be on over 300 people’s shirts,” said Holly.
Holly’s prize includes a tour of the Camp and tickets to the 2017 Youth Music Concert.
Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor and Camp founder and Youth Music Camp coordinator, Gillian Miles, congratulated Holly on her creative design.
Sponsors are Kia-Ora Estates Pty Ltd, the Paradice Family, Newgate, KAWAI, National College of Dance Newcastle, Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music and Upper Hunter Shire Council.
