A Message from the PresidentOver Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Rabbi Adelson presented the Derekh Program, his vision of transformation for Beth Shalom and the Pittsburgh Jewish community. Rabbi Adelson spoke of reframing the synagogue model and transforming Jewish life in Pittsburgh for better sustainability by providing new and accessible portals to Jewish engagement. For those of you who were not able to attend our services over the High Holy Days, an executive summary of the Derekh Program can be found on page 31.

The Derekh Program will only become a reality through the voluntary contributions of all of us. As we remember our past 100 years and envision our next century, I hope you are as inspired by the Rabbi’s vision as I am and join me in our Centennial Campaign to raise a minimum of $3,500,000, of which approximately $450,000 will be available for use in immediate operations over the next two years and the balance to grow our endowment. For the next five years it is our hope you will place Beth Shalom at or near the top of your tzedakah priorities.

Another way for congregants to help secure the future of Beth Shalom for the next generation is to include Beth Shalom in a will bequest or other planned gift devices such as a living trust or beneficiary designation on life insurance, IRAs, 401(k)s, and other financial and investment instruments. In conjunction with our Centennial Celebration, we are forming a 1917 Legacy Society, a society to be comprised of those who include Beth Shalom in their planned gifts. All 1917 Legacy Society members will be recognized on a permanent plaque to be displayed on the Synagogue premises. Complete details of this legacy program will be forthcoming.

Help us continue to move forward together as a community and build a stronger synagogue to sustain Jewish life. With your support we will continue to grow and flourish.

Celebrating the Warmth of the Past and the Light of Our Future

Two signature events are in the works for the Centennial year, a Luncheon and a Gala.

The Centennial Luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017Centennial Gala will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017

More details will be forthcoming in future issues of the Mishpachtenu, the Shabbat Bulletin, and our weekly emails about each of these events and other activities!

A Message from Rabbi AdelsonYearning for Community, Connection, and Kedushah

Ah, the latke! It hits the Jewish palate with an unfettered, pleasurable mix of memory, satisfaction, and fried wonderful-ness. Of course, the use of oil reminds us of the Hanukkah miracle. But who can argue that this culinary treasure is an icon unto itself, a ritual that engages body and soul with Jewish history and peoplehood, pressing the savory, sweet, and holy buttons all at once.

Here’s a new twist on an old favorite, appropriate for Hanukkah and Thanksgiving:

    Spaghetti Squash Latkes!

    • 1 average spaghetti squash • 1 large egg, beaten • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (use more if necessary for binding) • 1/2 teaspoon salt • A couple sprinkles black pepper • 1/2-3/4 cup olive oil (you can also use coconut oil for crispier results) • Optional toppings: Sour cream, apple sauce, salsa, Sriracha, etc.

    1. Cut squash in half, remove seeds, place on a baking tray, and bake at 350˚ for 30–45 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for at least 10 minutes. 2. Remove spaghetti-like squash strands with a fork. If necessary, cut strands on a cutting board to make them more manageable. 3. Place squash strands in a bowl and mix with beaten egg, flour, salt and pepper. 4. Heat oil in a nonstick pan. Drop squash mixture into 3-inch round patties. Fry until brown and crispy. 5. Remove latkes from oil and place on a platter layered with paper towels to absorb extra oil. Serve hot! Savor the taste of Hanukkah, and remember the miracle. (Don’t forget to light the candles!)

Berakhot for Hanukkah Home Ritual can be found on pages 14 & 15.

A Message from the Executive Director

As we move from Fall into Winter, I am reminded of a beautiful song sung by Judy Collins called, “The Fallow Way”: I’ll learn to love the fallow way

And gather in the patient fruits And after autumn’s blaze and burn I’ll know the full, still, deep roots

There is a time for quiet and for letting nature take its course. Just as the external world settles into a calm, so, too, we can cultivate an internal calm. After the frenetic pace of the holidays of October, we settle into a rhythm of measured activity, the morning and evening minyanim, the Shabbat services, the regular classes. We momentarily awake with the artificial light of Hanukkah and perhaps a vacation to a brighter place, but then return to the steady pace of winter.

Through all of this, the theme of our Centennial burns, like a beacon leading us into our celebrations, “Celebrating the warmth of the past and the light of our future”. It combines the energy which has sustained us for a hundred years with the glorious brightness of what is yet to come.

As April comes we begin the formal celebration of the Centennial with the luncheon on Sunday, April 23.

Winter is upon us, but this is not a time to sleep. It is a time to reach deep and contribute to the vision for Beth Shalom. Yes, reach deep and contribute the funds that are needed to keep the flame alive. This is the time. These months, as we transition from Fall to Winter, are the months to replenish our reserves, refuel so that we may break forth in celebration and shine our light on a new vision for Beth Shalom.

A Message from the Youth Director

I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great Gratitude…When we awake, we are told to say the Modeh Ani prayer and show

gratitude to God for another day. What else should we be thankful for? What else has shaped our lives and our day?

With Hanukkah upon us and winter knocking at our door, we should think about how we are teaching this important concept to our children. Let’s show them that every day is a blessing and teach them the importance of showing gratitude.

When we ask our youth what they are grateful for, what are their typical answers? Are they thankful for the latest and newest electronics? Are they thankful that the Steelers won? Or are they thankful for their friends, family, and another day?

During Hanukkah, we celebrate the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days and are thankful to our ancestors who triumphed over darkness. What would happen if we think of gratitude as a verb, and teach our children to act on being thankful for what our ancestors did for us? How can we teach the importance of actions, and that we are grateful for what we have, for Judaism, our community, and this Shul?

Hanukkah offers us the perfect opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation for others. As you begin your holiday preparation, I ask you to sit down with your children and come up with eight things they are thankful for: “one for each night, they shed a sweet light”. Make an effort to turn each night of beautiful candlelight into a night of gratitude. This can be accomplished through Mitzvot, Tikkun Olam, or simply by being kind to others.

During the coming year I look forward to planning several Gratitude Projects for our youth. Let’s work together to reach them spiritually and help them build an even stronger Jewish foundation.

If you would like to be involved in the youth department or assist us in programing, carpooling, or volunteering in any way please contact me. And if you know of youth who should be engaged please send me their names and information so we can update our records. We know that there are many more youth in our congregation we might reach so please do not assume we have all the names and contact information. Thank you very much!

A Message from the Youth Tefillah Director

In the second century, a rabbi by the name of Ben Zoma asked a simple question, who is rich? We might consider this question, in our age of abundance, to be a simple one. We have so much food, warm and cozy homes, and access to all of human knowledge at our fingertips. That is why it is so amazing that in a time without plumbing, heat, or more importantly, the internet, Ben Zoma answers his own question, “Who is rich? The one who is happy with their lot.” (Mishnah Avot 4:1) We can begin to reflect, as the temperature decreases, that it is not how much we have and can acquire, but how we view our lives that matter.

Rabbi Meir, one of Ben Zoma’s contemporaries, is quoted in the Talmud, suggesting that each of us is mandated to recite one hundred blessings a day. (Menachot 43b) How powerful it could be if we took the average time we are awake to recite these many blessings. We would be reciting a blessing nearly every ten minutes!

As we move through the winter, we will be exploring the many ways and expressions of gratitude. This important and necessary value is embedded throughout our tradition. As the Beth Shalom community continues to grow and expand, we look forward to seeing more of our families on Shabbat and holidays. Let us set an example, as youth, as families, and as a Beth Shalom community, for each other to express thanks for the incredible gifts we have. Let us show each other the multitude of ways we stand up and support each other. Let us find even more ways to convey Rabbi Meir’s one hundred blessings.

We shared a phenomenal High Holy Days, setting a new vision with lofty goals. I’m excited that we will have the opportunity to take those steps and I look forward to walking this path together.

A Message from the Director of the Early Learning Center

With the High Holidays behind us and Thanksgiving and Hanukkah quickly approaching, it seems appropriate to pause and reflect on all the happenings here in the Early Learning Center.

The beginning of this school year has been filled with a variety of opportunities for the families of Beth Shalom to come together as a community. As we moved into the High Holiday season it gave us an opportune moment to teach all of our new families about

the High Holidays and the importance of them to our school. We were so happy to have over 30 families represented at our Annual PTO Meeting led by the chairs: Ilene Rinn and Stacy Wendell. We discussed programming, community building, teacher appreciation, and fundraising. Our fundraiser this year will be a Yankee Candle sale. Last year, we were able to send our Art Studio Educator, Julie Lewinter, to Israel on a Classroom Without Borders trip to explore early childhood programs in Israel. The educators loved the beautiful Rosh Hashanah bags that Mara Svoboda helped put together for the PTO. Thank you to Rachel Albert who helped buy the necessities

of challah, honey, and grape juice. In addition, thank you to Michelle Resnick for the apples. The children enjoyed the shofar blowing by Ira Frank, his enthusiasm and smiles made the children so happy.

The first PTO event was Bagels in the Sukkah which was planned by four PTO volunteers Ilene Rinn, Stacy Wendell, Dan Eisner, and Teri Eisner. It was a great moment to meet each other, get to know Beth Shalom, and begin to feel a part of this family. Our ELC Committee Chairperson, Aviva Lubowsky, will continue to lead an amazing group of parents, past parents, and an educator who want to help our Beth Shalom community grow and flourish.

We have several upcoming events that will help us celebrate with our Beth Shalom community. The first is our monthly Shabababa Friday night service and optional dinner led by Rabbi Adelson. These special once a month evenings are filled with song, prayer, warmth, and laughter. In addition, all kids eat FREE. Rabbi Adelson adds a special spark to Shabababa and our weekly Shabbat Baboker on Friday mornings. Feel free to stop in and sing and dance as we welcome in Shabbat. Last but not least, we will have a Hanukkah Celebration on Friday, December 23 @ 1pm.Our students will sing, dance, and we will conclude with eating latkes!

We will close out this part of our school year with winter break which is December 26th-January 3rd. During this time our school will be cleaned and our teachers will take time to relax and refresh! This fall has been filled with many opportunities to increase community. We are thankful for all or families, old and new, and the community that is developing here at Beth Shalom.

A Message from the Director of J-JEP

In the Fall issue of Mishpachtenu I discussed my interest in adding Havruta learning into every J-JEP classroom. The goal of such was to create more opportunities for our young congregants to interact with Jewish ideas, so that they could perhaps incorporate these ideas into their daily lives.

I’d like to offer a glimpse into what happens in our classrooms: in mid-October some of our students who participated in the Famous Jewish

People elective learned about Rashi, the ultimate Torah commentator from the Middle Ages. After learning about Rashi and his contributions to Judaism, students in the class looked at a text of Torah, Rashi’s commentary and then discussed it in Havruta. The result of this deep interactive peer learning was two-fold. First, the engagement with the content increased the probability of the students to comprehend the information on a richer and more lasting level. In addition, judging by the conversations that took place between peers, the closer reading of the text along with Rashi’s commentary began a cultivation of a deeper curiosity about Judaism from the time of Rashi for the students in the class.

While this class was taking place, other students of the same age group were discussing the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in an objective way. They were having a dialogue about topics and participating in open reflection in an environment where they can ask difficult and perhaps uncomfortable questions. The goal of the day was to look beyond your assumptions, whatever they may be, and listen attentively to diverse opinions throughout history. The only wrong answer was to not ask a question at all.

Fact: High quality Jewish learning takes place in our classrooms. Fact: Our students engage with Jewish content meaningfully and in such an authentic way, as this is the philosophy of our program. Even knowing these have become expectations of J-JEP, I’m still so proud to have shared this glimpse with you for so many reasons. I am proud that Beth Shalom is so deeply invested in making everything Jewish relevant, and that we have created a space for our young congregants to think beyond the scope of holidays, the alef-bet, and finding Israel on the map. Rabbi Adelson and I share the vision of bringing Jewish text into everyday lives, and are happy to divide and conquer the age demographics.

I challenge you to join me and Rabbi Adelson in our effort in making everything Jewish relevant.

    Kol tuv,Liron [email protected]

Turn it and turn it again, for all is contained within it.- Pirkei Avot

J-JEP Parent Elective: Grow your Judaism through Hai MitzvahOne Sunday a month during J-JEP

    11:00am-12:00pm at Rodef Shalom

Join Rabbi Adelson, Rabbi Bisno and others for a unique experiential Jewish journey that blends monthly group study with personal choices of Jewish engagement, called the “Jewish Bucket List.” Each month we will study a topic using a specially designed curriculum that is accessible to those of all backgrounds and styles of practice, offering texts in Hebrew and English, from contemporary and traditional sources. Our tradition tells us that a full Jewish life involves our head, heart, and hands. Chai Mitzvah participants will be encouraged to build their “Jewish Bucket List” through identifying what is personally meaningful to them by incorporating study, spirituality and social action.

    Nov 13 |Dec 4, 11|Jan 29|Feb 5, 12, 26|March 5, 19

    9:30am-11:00am at Rodef Shalom

This J-JEP series invites adults to join Rabbi Danny Schiff for this 10 class Melton School series while J-JEP is in session. A treasure of irresistible jokes from the Israelite relationship with God to the growing divide between cultural and religious Judaism in the early 21st century. Treating Jewish jokes

as text, this series invites students to analyze and interpret the evolving concerns, styles, rhythms, preoccupations, and values of the Jewish people that lie buried deep in words that make us laugh as Jews, and that bond us as a people.

Who Owns the Dead? The Recovery, Identification, and Memorialization of Sept. 11 World Trade Center Victims

    Jay D. Aronson, PhDSunday, December 4 , 201610:00 am

This talk will discuss efforts to recover and identify the remains of victims from the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, as well as the profound impact that human remains had on the redevelopment of the site and the creation of the memorial. In this talk we discuss how the forensic recovery effort cannot be understood simply on scientific grounds because it is at its heart a political and moral statement. We also examine the challenges of dealing with politically significant deaths, both for families of the victims and those charged with memorializing them, and debates over who ought to have a say in how recovery from conflict or disaster takes shape.

Questioning Return:a novel by Beth Kissileff

Beth Kissileff, PhDSaturday, December 10, 201612:45 pm after Kiddush

Join Pittsburgh author Beth Kissileff as she discusses her new novel, “Questioning Return”. The novel’s protagonist, Wendy Goldberg, spends a year in Jerusalem questioning the lives of American Jews who make “Aliyah,” a return both to Israel itself and to traditional religious practices. Are they sincere? Are they happier? The unexpected answers and Wendy’s

experiences (a bus bombing, a funeral, an unexpected suicide, a love affair, and a lawsuit) lead her to reconsider her own true Jewish identity.

Beth Kissileff, PhD will discuss her book, which launches at Classic Lines Bookstore on Forbes on November 15, 2016 at7:00 pm

Technology and the Futureof Work and Money

Seth Copen Goldstein, PhDSunday, January 22, 201710:00 am

Technological progress has freed us from having to perform many unpleasant and repetitive tasks. Will continued progress be a boon, freeing us completely from the need to work, or a curse, eliminating the ability for us to be gainfully employed? This talk will explore one approach to making sure further technological progress will lead to lives full of meaning.
