You made your 'cherse ter'

While you feel better

Instead of 'Worster' "

Attached to the back inside cover is a hand made card filled with poetry across 22 pages. The front of

the card has a painted silhouette of a sailboat. The first page of this card has an adorable crayon

3. [sermon][ quote][ religion][ Robert E. Lee]Anonymous. Quotes and Thoughts on the Sermons of

Reverend Moses Drury Hoge from 1894 to 1898. The Washington Life Ins. Co. New York. 1893. A

tiny pocket journal, written by an unknown individual whose entries mostly consists of quotes from

Page 5: Miscellany: Coyote Tales, Punjab Goods, Letters from Hell ...eclectibles.com/v/cat/e-list56.pdf · rock echoes back the gentle note of the dove, and if a little lost child weeps at

e-list 56 5 [email protected]

sermons delivered by Reverend Moses Drury Hoge (often referred to in the journal as Dr. Hoge).

Along with the quotes, are the writer's thoughts on these sermons. Dr. Hoge was a well-known

preacher and orator for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war he rebuilt his

church in Richmond, VA, and travel extensively to preach. The entries start in 1894 and continue to

1898, and below are a few excerpts:

"The sermon was simple and beautiful- quite characteristic of Dr. Hoge. The rule of happiness as taught by the

Scriptures, he says, 'to recognize and appreciate present blessing'. The word 'thought' in the earlier language

(of King James time) [meant] care, anxiety , foreboding. 'Thought' now signifies those mental processes

granted to us; memory, expectation, reflection." - Jan 5, 1896

" I beseech you (said Dr, H.) by the meekness and gentleness of Christ.' In the Yosemite Valley rise vast walls

and columns of rock which echo back the thunder. But if a door perches in a crevice, or on a ledge and coos the

rock echoes back the gentle note of the dove, and if a little lost child weeps at the base of the cliff, the rocks echo

back the weeping child. The sermon illustrates not the sternness and terrors of God's wrath but the compassion,

the meekness, gentleness and sympathy of Christ." Oct 16, 1898

Also in this journal as several quotes or excerpts of speeches, such as speeches written upon the

deaths of Civil War General Robert E. Lee and Senator Edward Cary Walthall (Mississippi). One of

the more hilarious quotes from the journal is "Referring to turkeys: There shall be nothing graver than

the gravy, and nothing more stuffy than the stuffing." Additionally there are two loose pages, one is a

newspaper clipping of a poem entitled "My Cigarette" and the second is a hand written quote in

Latin.

This journal was published by the Washington Life Ins. Co, and most likely given out by an insurance

agent by the name of Thomas L. Alfriend, a prominent insurance and business man from Richmond,

VA. The cover of the album has "L. Alfriend" embossed on the front. There is a section of the front

cover missing some surface leather where the first name would go. This journal most likely did not

personally belong to Alfriend as there is an entry on February 16, 1896 which details the journal

owner's mother's death. Alfriend's mother died years before in 1852.

Black leather covers. Gilt-edge pages. 72 pages. Approximately two-thirds filled. 4 ¼” x 2 ½”.

the Atomic Bomb and the Surrender of Japan. Jim. Tokyo, Japan. September, 25 1945. A naval

officer by the name of Jim was serving on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CV-14), which arrived in Tokyo

Bay, Japan on September 6, 1945, mere days after the official surrender of Japan. He was among the

first dozen or so officers allowed ashore, and he traveled by train (10-15 miles) to the city of Tokyo.

He describes the vast damage he saw from the various air raids and firebombing the area endured

during WWII. Furthermore he writes about the impressions he has of the Japanese people,

particularly about their reactions to American soldiers. At one point he describes the dress of the

Japanese, focusing on their shoes, and he draws the wooden sandal he saw the children wearing. Jim

was also able to take a plane ride over Tokyo where the pilot was able to circle over the Imperial

Palace, and also showed him an aerial photo of the devastation of the atom bomb. Jim was made

several trips to Tokyo before his ship departed to return to San Francisco on September 20, 1945. It

was during his free time on this ship he wrote this letter. Below are some quotes:

"Our ship anchored just off Yokohama. The famous Mt. Fujiyama [Mt. Fuji] made a very impressive sight

when it was clear enough to see it!!!"

"The trip is about 12 to 15 miles long, and is through what used to be a thickly settled industrial area. I use the

past tense as about 90% of it is completely leveled or bombed out. In Tokyo proper, a few small sections appear

to have been missed completely, and some of the large modern buildings proved to be fairly bomb-proof and fire-

proof. Even now about 2/4 of the town is in bad shape."

"Some of the young men - in their late teens and about my age - bad the look of hate in their eyes. These few are

going to require re-education."

Additionally he draws examples of the little wooden sandals worn by the children.

The letter itself is two pages, with both sides are written on. The paper bares the crest of the US Navy

on it. The envelope or cover has a woodcut illustration of Tokyo Bay with the USS Ticonderoga inside

of it. Measures 10 ½” x 7 ½” (letter); 7 ½” x 4" (envelope). (#28001600) $200.00

wrote a letter to her husband and two children Sarah and James on her supposed deathbed (she

would actually live until 1914 and have another child, Elizabeth). It is unknown if she was actually

severely ill or just over dramatic, however the letter itself is very sincere. In it she writes that her

husband should "forget me not when far away for you no I was true to you" and often asks her

husband and children to put their "trust in God for he alone will care for you." She continues "this

advice is from your Dear Mother, be true children to all" The letter is written in a notebook, that

10. [science][ invite][ association][ circular] Circular, American Association for the Advancement of

Science Meeting Invite. Cambridge, MA. 1849. The American Association for the Advancement of

meeting, and this printed invite is for the second such meeting

in Cambridge, MA, which took place on August 14, 1849. In

addition to the invite, at the base of the letter is are the 'Rules of

the Association'. On the interior of the invite, it lists the officers

in the AAAS. This printed invite is addressed to N. P. Ames of

Cabotville, MA (now known as Chickopee, MA). It is possible

that N. P. Ames stands for Nathan P. Ames, the co-founder of

Ames Manufacturing Company, which was a manufacturer of

swords, tools and cutlery based in Chicopee, MA. Nathan P.

Ames was a member of AAAS (according to the 'Proceedings of

the AAAS, 1896, which can be found on Google Books, where he is listed as a deceased member pg.

"take off your hat" reminded me of a senile buffalo in a fit of the

tantrums."

"And when you gave your three reasons, in such a magnanimous tone,

luxurious. The rest of this book are photographs meant to illustrate just how spectacular and

luxurious their ships are. The majority of the ships' interior was designed by a firm call A. Bembe

based in Mainz, Germany. The book features 27 images from photographs of a variety of interior

designs done by A. Bembe however only 8 of the photographs are of NDL ships. The rest of the

with the Kaiser Wilhelm II 2 which was completed and launched in 1903 and is a black ship with 4

funnels), the SS Aller which was launched in 1886, and the SS Lahn which launched in 1887. A.

Bembe was a company known for designing a furnishing some of the noblest palatial residences in

Western Europe. The rest of the photographs are depict some of these residences, for example there

are several photographs of different rooms of the Peles Caste (located in Sinaia and was built by King

Carol I Romania). Some of the other interiors shown are from Villa Hallgarten in Frankfurt and

homes of several prominent individuals in Bremen (the town where the headquarters of NDL was

located). The 27 the images are from photographs on canvas mounts. The 27 photograph images

featured in this book are spread over 26 pages (one page has two photographs, all others are full

page). The covers of this book are leather, and the front cover has a deeply embossed elaborate design

playgrounds encourage right living.

When a generation of children are brought up in the city, without that which is

their right, and this is due to the fault of omission of those in authority, there is

nothing that can atone for this breach of trust either to the parents, the children,

or to society.

Our effort now is to secure the passage of this bill by the incoming Legislature
