Buckland Esq., has hande d the Council's letter to them for reply, re~Rrding the replacing of portion of Z28 King St., recently destroyed by fire, and the Company would be glad to learn Council's minimum requirements regarding this matter; Alderman Pa ley moveO.. that the letter be "Received", and the writer informed that Council regrets the decisi on not to demolish the whole of the building, and any portion of t he building damaged by fire must be removed, and if re-erected, Plans and Specifications should provide for all walls etc., to be areoted in brick-work, as far as possible , or other non-combustible material, Seconded by Alderman Ryah, and carried.

Alderman Ryan moved that the application be "Received11 , and granted, (when the Hall is not otherwise engaged), for a period of three months, when a further application for an extension of time may be made . Seconded by Alderman Pawley, . and carried. •

Letter from P. Brevett, intimating that certain of his Tools were missing from this Coancil's Gladstone St., Depot, and ·asking for the bUill of £2/18/- in recompense . Ald. Roberts moved that the letter be "Received", and referred to the Finance Committee for report, in conjunction with a report from this Council's Engineer, regarding the matter. Seconded by Alderman Solomon, and carried.

Letter from the Kingsford-Smith Testimonial Fund Committee, asking th&t a List be opened at the Newtom Tom Hall, fo'r subscriptions to this Fund . Alderman Bugler moved that the application be "Received", and referred to the Finance Committee for report • Seconded by Alderman Dunshea, and carried.

Tyrrell,M.L.C., General Secretary of the Federated, Municipal & Shire Councils Employees' Union or Aus ., asking that further oonsideration be given to the discharge of certain of this Council's Workmen, and intimating that if they are discharged, their places must be filled by Members of the Union , residing in this :Municipality. Lanaghan, asking on behalf: of the Warren Ball Memorial fund, f'or permission to place a sui table .JVl.emorial Obelisk, on the north-western corner of Hollis­Park, about 3 ft. back from the building lines of Tarren Ball Avenue,and Georgina St., and, further, asking if this Council will construct a suitable concrete base f'or the :Memorial Obelisk, 3 ft. square, and 18" above the ground level. Alderman Bugler movad that the letter be "Received" , and the requ.esi;Q contained therein be complied with. Seconded by .Alderman Pawley, and carried.

Brennan, covering a Cheque value £30, forwarded on behalf of Brennans Ltd, Social Club, as a donation towards the rands of the ~ewtown Mayor's Relief Movement, to pDovide Food and Clothing f'or the Distressed within this Municipality. Alderman Delve moved that the letter be "Received", and Mr . Brennan, and the l!embers of' the Social Club, be thariked for their generous donation. Seconded by Alderman Bugler, and carried.

REPORTS.

The ,To.wn Clerk submitted a Heport a Conference held on the 27th ult., between the Deputy Mayor (Alderman I.E. Ryan, J.P.-, Alderman J. Solomon,J.P., and the Town Clerk, (W.G. Salmon~, with the Managing Director of the Electric Light & Power Supply Corpn. Ltd, (J.Donoghue ,M.I.E.E. etc.,), re matters relative to the Public supply of electricity to this Municipality; As a result of which, it was promised that the amount of' deposit for private resiQences, would be reduced from £2, to £1, and any concessions which had been granted in the prices of electricity, to other Municipalities, would also apply to the Municipality of' Newtovm. It was Resolved on the motion of Alderman Ryan, Seconded .by Alderman Solomon, that the Town Clerk ' s Rep ort be "Reeei ved", and adopted, and an enquiry be. made as to w~ether those ~ensumeDB who had already paid £2, or any ins4~1ment over £1, in connection with private Residences, could now have a refund. of' u

1 or any alllount paid over £.1. A letter confirming the reduction to £.1 in

the amount "'Dr Deposit on Dwellings, was also ttRecei ved". The Engineer submitted his report of works completed or in progress durinc the ras t fortnight, together with an addendum, stating that G. Kilmartin had be ~r employed asav temporary-Hand. ttReceived".

Alderman Bugler moved that the letter be "Received", and Mr . Thomas be invited to meet this Council ' s Works ' Committee , when this matter can be more fully explained . His Worship the Mayor, as Chairman of the Works' Committee, submitted a Report of a Meeting held on the 22nd inst., as contained on folios. 322/3 of the Works ' Committee's Report Book., and embodying recommendations Nos. 1 to 15 inclusive. It was decided to consider the recommendations seriatum. Recommendations Nos. 1 to 8 were ~Received~ and adopted. -Upon Item 9 being submitted, it was decided to so amend the recommend­ation, as to provide for the report re Gladstone St., draina~e to include the advisability of resuming sufficient land for playground area, and also for diverting all stormwater drainage from Kingston Ward . Recommendations Nos . 10 to 15 inol. were "Reoei ved", and adopted. '

Alderman Dunshea moved as a covering motion, that with the amendment to Recommendation No.9, the Works' Committee's Report be "Received", and adopted, and its reoommendations be. carried into effect. Seoonded by Alderman Roberts, and carried.

The Engineer submitted his report of works completed or in progress during the past fortnight, whioh was "Received".

The Health Inspector submitted his report, as contained on foli os 21/22 of the Health Inspector's Report Book, and.. Alderman Dunn moved that the Report be nRecei ved", and adopted, and a letter be for~arded to Mr. w. Dubber. expressing this Caancil's appreciation of his satisfactory services, whilst in the employ of the Council, and expressing the hope that his health may soon be restored. Seconded by Alderman funshea, and carried.

QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE.

Under this heading, Alderman Solomon moved;- ~That the Mayor be requested , when engaging relieving labour, to so distribute it, that as many as possible will reap the bene~it~ SeconQed by Alderman Delve, and carried.

Alderman Solomon asked if any definite reply had been received, re aarding the establishment of a Clothing Depot at the Town Hall, Newtownj.? The Mayor replied in the negative, and Alderman Solomon moved, . "That le~ters be forwarded to F.M. Burke, and.. R.J. Stuart-Robertson, Ms.L.A., requesting them to urge upon the Minister for Labour & Industry, the advisability of establishing this Depot.n Seconded by Ald • Dunshea, and carried.

Alderman Bugler moved;- "That E.C. Riley, M.H.R., be requested to interview the Postmaster-General, anQ ask him on behalf of this Council, not to interfere with Broadcasting Progr~mmes, either as reeards the broadcasting of Race-Meetings, or any other branch of sport, or the alte~ing of Vave -Lengths , as the former alterationti wOQld greatly militate aga~nst the enjoyment derived by the Residents of this Municipality, from Broadc~sting Programmes, and the latter would incur extra expense in altering Radio Sets, which the Working Class of this Municipality, at the present time, through unemployment etc., is ill-prepared to incur." Seconded by Alderman Dunn, ~d carried.

Alderman Roberts moved;- "'That F.li. Burke, M.L.A.., be requested to arrange ~or a Deputation ,f'rom.,•tlhisGouncil, to wait upon the Minister for Tre.nsport, to urge that the Stormv/8.ter Drainage from King St. ,Newtown, (Main Road No. 1), between the Newtown and st. Peters' Railway Bridges, receive immediate attention." Seconded by Alderman Ryan, and carrieQ.

Alderman Ryan drew attention to the need for repairs to the footpathA in front o~ Nos. 611/631 King st.,where the awnings were recently removed . The Mayor said he wOUld have this ~atter attended to.
