Last year, Damien and his mom, Nevaeh, didn’t have a home of their own. Each day, Nevaeh was burdened with the constant worry that she and Damien were not guaranteed a safe, warm place to sleep. They spent far too many nights sleeping on a friend’s living room floor or staying in a local shelter when there was space available. But Nevaeh will never forget the night that they rode the city bus - all night long - just so Damien could sleep somewhere warm. She watched her son sleep on the patterned bus seat next to her, wrapped snugly in a baby blanket, and wondered how she could give him the things she didn’t have as a child: a place to call home, the safe feeling of being tucked into the same bed each night, and the freedom from the constant, toxic stress that seemed to follow them everywhere. After that night, riding the city bus, Nevaeh found the courage to pick up the phone. Because of you, a friendly voice was on the other end of the phone, ready to listen to whatever she had to say. She explained that, more than anything, she desperately wanted Damien to experience what it felt like to just be a kid; free from the anxiety of always wondering what would happen next. This phone call began Nevaeh’s journey toward stability – a journey that you made sure she wouldn’t have to take alone. Nevaeh applied for public housing and got on a waiting list for properties near her work. It took a couple months, but she finally found a space for her and Damien. That first week, they unpacked their car and brought their belongings into the empty apartment. It took months before they furnished their space, but the very first piece of furniture Nevaeh got for their home was a bed for Damien. Nevaeh holds her breath when she thinks about how far they have come, and the future that awaits her son – a young boy filled with joy and curiosity. There will undoubtedly be bumps in the road ahead, but Nevaeh feels fortunate to know that the Nursery – and you – will be there to partner with her on her parenting journey. MARY PAT LEE, Executive Director LISA O’BRIEN, Board Chair YOU GAVE HIM A BED OF HIS VERY OWN With your compassion, Nevaeh’s courage, and the community connection the Nursery provides, Nevaeh was able to move Damien from a living room floor to a bed of his very own; from a mindset of instability and fear to one of predictability and comfort. CHANGE IN FINANCIAL POSITION

Next month, Damien will celebrate his second birthday, and, happily, it will feel very different from his first. This year, he’ll wake up in his very own bed, which you made possible. His mom will make his favorite breakfast of blueberry pancakes (with lots of syrup) which they will share at the kitchen table in the home they have made for themselves.
