CURATORIAL GOALS

• Create a new visual identity for Natoma and Minna Streets through artist involvement in the design of the streetscape, including paving, lighting, landscaping, and wayfinding.

• Make the Minna-Natoma corridor a “hidden gem” pedestrian destination that pulls people to and from the Transbay Terminal and Yerba Buena Gardens and SFMOMA, and through the passageway between Howard and Natoma Streets, adjacent to SFMOMA.

• Prioritize diversity among artists, elevating typically underrepresented voices in public art projects.

• Engage artists of local, national, and international renown to create projects that respond to site-specific needs and opportunities.

• Maintain visual cohesion within the neighborhood with seamless integration of art into streetscape improvements and the surrounding context.

• Support the various goals, policies, and implementation strategies articulated in:The South Downtown Design and Activation PlanTransit Center District Plan SFMOMA Expansion Plan YBCBD Street Life Plan

O W N E R r e l at i o n s h i p sJessie Stuart 657/667 Mission Street development

John Collins is a tenant of the building; building owner is not local.

Michelle at 111 Minna helped install new mural

Building owner lives in Hillsbourgh; need to connect for a new mural

Building owner lives in San Rafael

Dick Blick is the tenant on ground floor

Westside 140 New Montgomery - Joe Rosenmayer (local contact) / Cory Saunders (regional contact) Same building owner as Blick

Corner tenant is Kaplan

Will want to work with The W to coordinate. Roger Huldi is the General Manager of the W Hotel

199 New Montgomery - residential building with several owners. Abigail and Grey McDonald (Owner/residents/hotel managers who attended the stakeholder meeting about partnership from the building’s HOA)

Site is now under construction and will have an office use and a building lobby fronting Minna. They are required to abandon the curb cut. Approved plans don’t mention if they needed to restore curb, but BSM is asking if they were required to do so. If not, curb resoration should be enforced.

Given all of the loading zones, sidewalk widening may not be feasible here. A bulbout at the corner could be a good mitigation, however, we would need to run teurn templates to ensure the driveway still works.

This entire block is on-street loading, making sidewalk widening challenging here.

This loading may be tough to remove

Bulbout here with gateway?

All of this long-term parking can be converted sidewalk

Bulbout with gateway

Is SF MOMA legally required to allow pedestrians to move through here?

Is pedestrian access permanently allowed? If so, we should get them to internalize their dumpsters

Possible to incorporate some element of connection between Natoma and Mission along New Montgomery?

Raised crosswalk here

There’s a sliver of this building that is really visible on the left side if walking towards NM - not the most prime site for wall art, but moderately interesting.

The east side of the garage entrance is part of the 657/667 Mission Street development project through Align. Jessie Stuart was at the stakeholder meeting. Good opportunity with timing since the project is new, they may be able to incorporate something into design.

Blank wall for mural?

Per Planning Code section 145, they are not allowed to have frosted glass on the ground floor. We should find out if their new facade will meet our transparency requirements.

This is a pretty dead facade considering the active use (bar) behind it. Greater transparency?

If walking towards NM, there’s a white wall face of this building exposed. Mural?

Vitrines in the SFMOMA garage could be a good precedent for other dead facades/blank walls. SFMOMA could curate the art inside them.

Need to make a connection here for a mural

During renovation MOMA had a big vinyl mural with the theme “Play Artfully”. Could/should something similar be pursued again? It’s an opp site--very visible.

Huge gray wall - we’re aware of this one already as it’s the side of the MOMA garage, but it’s extremely visible for a work of art walking towards MOMA.

Blank black panel on the WeWork. Mural?

Frosted windows may not be legal

A wall exposed overhead that could be a mural (visible when walking towards NM)

Blue Bottle . Could be a cool ground floor space for a mural. Moderate opportunity.

Walking towards NM, this building has a large blank wall exposed that could have a mural. Quite exposed/visible.

Top of this building has a big open wall facing MOMA’s windows. Would be a visible place for a work of art.

Can we remove the mural on top of the mural and restore this to the original artwork?

White wall where MOMA currently has some JR wheat paste portraits. Opportunity site for rotating art?

If walking towards 3rd, there’s a very nice brick wall from this building that’s very visible - no windows etc disrupting the “canvas”

Ideal to finish these remaining niches into something more colorful to match the rest of the alley? Does not have to be more seating.

This mural is brand new, thanks to Michelle at 111 Minna!

Blank ground floor panels behind plants

Little alcoves were raised as an issue and could have a light/art installation

Art lighting opportunity for night activation

SFMOMA could give up some off-street parking spaces to build some pop-up “Art Retail” (like 836 Valencia) here

Future pop-up retail?

A ton of space for art at the ground floor

Light based art project to make garage passage feel less dark/unsafe?

Art lighting opportunity for night activation

Bus ramps over street are an art/projecting opportunity and form an eye-stop at the end of the corridor. Maybe neon lighting installation on the side of the ramps

A major-league opportunity. Outdoor scupture garden anyone?

This building has a ton of space for art at the ground floor, but also a wall that’s exposed overhead that could be a mural too (visible if you are walking towards NM)
