Number of gallons of water supplied to various mines for mining purposes for the quarter ending 31st March 1875-8,197,000. ,

Rate of charge for water for mining purposes-fourpence per 1,000 gallons. Total amount of gold purchased by seven banks during the quarter-:&7,643 ozs. 2 dwts. 12 grs.

SOUTHERN DIVISION. 11fr. George Perry, ffIining Registrar.

QUARTZ MINING.

Quartz mining is looking brighter that it has for some ti,me. Staffordshire Reef.-The Speedwell Tribute, as usual, continues to yield well. 'rhe Hopewell Tribute Company have struck some excellerit stone at their 120-foot level, which promises well

for some time to come. , The Hopewell Company have sunk their shaft to a depth of 5:&2 feet, and are driving for the reef at 500 feet.

The future prospects of this mine are very favorable. Frenchman's.-The Hope Company (A.malgamated) have been sinking and driving in a splendid lode 7 feet

thick. A trial crushing of 21 tons, taken indiscriminattHy,.yielded dwts. per ton. This is considered so satisfactory that they intend to erect a clllshing plant forthwith. Another claim of 21 men's ground has been taken up by the same company on the south.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

The great scarcity of water during the past quarter has materially affected this branch of mining. Break-o'-Day.-Tile returns from Grant and party and Turner and party arc below their usual average, in

consequence of the long continued drought. McMullen's Bridge.-The Goldsbrough Company have sunk their shaft to the depth of 76 feet. They have

purchased a complete winding and pumping plant, which they intend to erect before going much deeper, as doubts are entertained of being able to bottom without the aid '{f machinery, in consequence of the very wet nature of the ground.

Pitfield Plains.-The old Maiden City claim has recently been taken up by Rutherford and party (Welcome Company), who were determined upon trying to "trace the old lead, which was supposed to have run out. They were rewarded by coming upon washdirt which I am informed gave them as high as £50'per man per week. Should the lead be found to continue, a large field for enterprise will,be opened up in that direction.

BUNINYONG DIVISION. Mr. Robert M. Harvey, Mining ~urveyor.and Registrar.

ALLUVIAl, MINING.

" No fresh discovery has been made during the quarter in this division, and want of water has cansed the stoppage of some small co-operative co~panies. With the exception of in the Perseverance Company, there are no miners at work on the Main Durham Lead, and till a powerful pumping plant has been erected on the 'upper portion of said main gutter, little can. be done; were the water drained oft; some rich ground would be rendered workable, and E!mploytllent afforded to several hundred miners. There is a considerable decrease in the number of alluvial miners and in thneturns of alluvial gold,

Page 28: MINING SURVEYORS AND REGISTRARS.1875. victoria. reports of the mining surveyors and registrars. quarter ended 31st march 1875. presented to both houses of parliament by ids excellency's

26

QUAltTZ MINING.

This branch of mining is steadily improving, and is likely to do so. At Mount Heren a battery is to be erected, and the battery belonging to the Buninyong Estate has been rented, and will now crush for hire, the rate fixed being 6s. 6d. per ton.

The:uverage per ton isbette! t,his, q1fa;rter, b,eing constdel'ab!y over 3 dwt~., and I ~nticipate a~ i~provement in the, ti)tal YIelds next quarter. , ,1, '. . : ' " ,

The Imperial Company are sinking their main shaft, intending to deepen it to about 400 feet, while the One·and-All Company, on the same reef (Hiscock's), are driving north into new country.

'SMYTHESDAI;E DIVISION . • '- ..... j\.,j, ~ '. , J., " ... ~"" .. t ....

lIfr. John Lynch, llfining Surveyor and Registrar. The yield of gold for the last quarter is the smallest pr~duced, in this division for an equal period for severai

years back. I do not, however, apprehend that"tneCfalling off: iildiEates, any thing worse than a temporary depressioll, or that mining industry will not regain, at. lea,st, ,a large share of,i,ts.past attractiveness.

Dnring the past quarter the general condition of th~s divisio!l has not improved. On Steiglitz the few mines at work have given tolerable retur:qs. ' At Elaine the Minerva claim stands prominent, both on acconnt of the quantity and quality of the stone raised,

and also for the comparative ease with which it is obtah;ted. , The alluvial yield is very small, owing to the great scarcity of'water. The Lal.Lal Waterworks Company have

suspended operations for a long time past, and at this time of year the want of that supply is much felt both in mining and for domestic use.

QUARTZ MINING.

I have to record another illustratiou of the expenditure of a large amount of capital without sufficiently prospecting and developing the area for which the outlay was made. In this instance it is the ground which was held in 1869-70, under the Gold Mining Leasing Regulations, by the Union Quartz Mining Company, on the Union Reef. This company, having erected first· class pumping and crushing machinery, and sinking a main and several shallow shafts, collapsed, lj-nd the machinery was eventually sold and removed from ,the' ground. Some months ago, a few young men formed a co.operative party to prospect the ground, and after cleanin~ out one of the Union Oompany's old shafts, almost immediately came upon a shoot of gold; they rose and crushed 48 tons of quartz, which, yielded 57 ozs. of gold, or an average of over one ounce per ton. The water proving rather troublesome, and having no pumping machinery, they started a tunnel, which they are now driving to intersect the'reef at a lower level. They also came across payable gold-bearing quartz on the surface, some distance from the shaft, and, from present appearances, the mine is very likely to become a remunerative one.

The Morning Star Company, referred to in my la~t report as having encouraging prospects, have since been doing exceedingly well. The mine is worked. by six men, who obtained 339 ozs. of gold, and from this it may be assumed that at least a clear £1,000 have been divided between the four fortunate shareholders of this mine.

The total as well as,the average yield of the Sultan Company's mine has also improved, and £1,562 lOs. have been declared iu dividends. On .account of very recent breakage of machinery having occurred. and partly from the scarcity of water for crushing purposes, a stoppage of the working 'of this mine has taken place lately, and nearly all the miners employed by this company have been temporarily discharged. '

Mounter Brothers' mine also continues to yield well; the average yield has been about 3t ozs. to tho ton, and although this is a great falling off from that of the previous quarter, it, nevertheless, leaves the owners very large profits. " . ' , '

There has been a large increase in the total average yield, namely, from 9 dwts. 10'86 grs, for the last against 17 dwts. 16'77 grs. for the present quarter. This result, however, i!l mainly attributable to the total standstill of all batteries crushing with water-power, which, when ahvork, reduco large quantities of quartz and mullock combined, of which the average yield is very small. The season having been very dry, no water could be procured for this purpose.

ALLUVIAL MINING,"

A rush on a small scale has set in at the head of Davis Gully, situated on the northeru ~lope of the Big Hill, between Simmons' Reef and Bany'a Reef. The sinking is easy, and between 40 and 50 feet deep. The prospectors obtained 14 dwts. of gold from the bottom of their shaft. Five or six claims are at present on gold. The washdirt averages from 9 inches to a foot, and the highest average yields are about 1 dwt. to the four buckets of washdirt. It is the nearest approach to a fresh lead of gold that has been opened here for many years past, but it is not likely to be of any extent.

BEECHWORTH DIVISION. , , Mr. Alexander Alderdice, Mining' Registmr.

, The weather during the, past quarter has been exc~edingly dry, and in consequence there·~as not been so much alluvial gqld obtained.as is usual in this quarter of the year. ; Several of the sluicing claims in the neighborhood of Beechworth and ~tanley h!i:ve not yet washed down, on account of the scarcity of water.

The quarter has l:ieen· very dull as regards alluvial mining, but wore attention has been paid to quartz. At ~tony Creek, the discq, ver, ers of the Dublin Reef have parted with their interest to Messrs. Halma and others, and the new company are busy,"erec'ttng a crushing mill in the vicinity of the claim. A tunnel is being put in at a low level, in order to strike the reef about water-level. 'The other reefs in the locality are looking well, but no crushing has been ~one, in consequence of the absence of a mill. By the time the Dublin mill is erected a large' body of quartz will be i'eady for it. " ' : ,The reefs in the ,neighborhood of 1\1 yrtleford continue to give' good returns, especially the Agamemnon, the last crushing yielding over 1 oz. 2 dwts. per ton. Muller's Reef, at Palmerston, gave 1 oz. per ton for a small crushing, and it still looks well where the stone came from. .'} ,

There has been It remarkably fine yield from the Rechabit;;'·Reef at Hurdle Flat, viz., 30 tons 10 cwt., giving 200 ozs. of gold, or over 6t ozs. per ton. From time to time lhis reef has turned out some very rich stone, lmt latterly it had been very poor, and, in consequence, the proprietors let it on tribute; the result above is the first obtained by the tributers, and the reef remaining looks to be as good as that crushed,

BUCKLAND DIVISION. , "

J'Ir: /.ewis C. Kinc1tela, ~~lining Ilegistmr. " I

The quarterly returns tl'unsmittetl herewith are probably the most unfavorable exposition of mining enterprise which has hitherto been submitted tv you from this division.

The works of the HarrietvilJe Deep I,ead Company have been stopped for some months past, pending arrange. ments to work the claim on tribute; and although drives Imve been driven in various directions, the operations in this mine may be regarded as valueless towards testing the le:cd in the Ovens valley, in consequence of the deep grouud having never be,,!n bottomed. ',. . .. , .

. The Ovens Valley Mining CompallY, near Bright, pei,ng' crippled for want of adequate : funds, have restncted their operations to driving tunnels for removal of surface dmiui!ge, alid making arrangements to erect a 8uit~ble plant at the site of the proposed shaft. ' ,'" ",' ; " . ; " .;, ... ·u.

In shallow alluvial milling little of interest has farther than a tendency displayed by the Chinese to take up the un prospected track of alluvial ground, the Woolshed for some miles towards Harrietville.

At Hal'rietville milling is more depressed than at any period within my knowledge; neither are there any of amendment; consequelltly the mining population bas materially decreased in number.

At Running Creek, which for many years afforded employment to over oue hundred men, mining has nearly ceased; however, there are reasons to believe that upon wil1dill~ up the old Happy Valley Company a new company will be formed to resume work upon the reefs known to exist in the claims, !lnd to search further for the large reef so suddenly lost at the 500.foot level.

The reefs at Wandiligong (late Morse's and Growler's Creeks) still keep up a fair return of gold; hut, in the almost total absenoe of any new discoveries either here or ill any other part of this division, it is to be feared that the prosperity now enjoyed by that locality may be materially affected.

A few reefs upon the Buckland will produce a fair share of gold during the winter, aud it is not unlikely that a new mill or two may be erected shortly there, in the vicinity of previously discovered reefs, but unworked, in consequence of the expense of cartage. '

A steady decrease in our Chinese population may be noted for the past year. About 15 Europeans have left for the Palmer, Noumea, and Singapore.

During the quarter eighteen sluice-heads of water have been sold, at 25. 6d. to 15s. each, making an average of lOs. per head. . .,: . :

ALEXANDRA SUBDIVISION. Mr. ,Robert W. S. Greig, Mining Surveyor' and Registrar.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

The prospects of our mines have not been of an Jlncouraging character during the quarter, the New Gobur Company's plant of machinery having been disposed of and the mine closed. The other companies on this lead won no gold during the quarter. A considerable quantity of dead work has been done in the Victory Company's mine; but, owing to the unfortunate accidents that have occurred in this mine, the tributers were compelled to stop, and the company have since confined their work to draining the mine. '

The Triumph Company have also been engaged in drainage works only during the quarter. The river, creek, and bank workings, although employing a number of miners in the division, are not giving

the usual average returns. Several attempts have been made during the quarter to find payable deposits near the Acheron workings, but these as yet have proved abortive.

QUARTZ MINING.

The Acheron field has been the only one that has attracted any attention during the quarter; a number of claims have been takell up and gold minillg leases applied for; but, owing to the expenses of carting the quartz to Alexandra and crushing, that field is poorly represented in the return herewith. I have no doubt, however, that the ensuing quarter will show more important yields, as the crushing mill formerly at DID'ham Gully has been removed and re-erected near the new field, and commences crushing this week. Another machine is also in course of ercction there, but is not expected to be ready for a few weeks; there will therefore be ample crushing power to ascertain the value of the mines there, and give them a fair test.

A new vein of quartz has also been struck in the Surprise Reef, Robinson Crusoe Gully, which has given the handsome average of 30zs. 17 dwts. 12 grs., this proving that, however much the depression existing here may be, there is reason to hope that an.improvement may be looked for, as such discoveries in abandoned ground prove that our fields here have as 'yet' not been tested unless in a most superficial manner.

DRY CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. Robert Pemberton, ilfining Regist1·ar.

I have ,the honor to report that nothing of any consequence in mining has occurred in my division since my last returns were furnished. There are at present two parties prospecting for quartz, but nothing has as yet been developed as payable, although gold-bea.ring leaders bave been found; still I believe the persons prospecting lire sanguine of eventually coming upon a gold-beal'ing lode wide enough and sufficiently impregnated with the precious metal to prove remunerative. The North-Eastern Tin and Gold Mining Company, I am happy to say, have, after four months' labor in carrying up a ,tail-race, reached the solid face, so that from this out sluicing will be vigorously prosecuted, and I hope to De able to state in my next quarterly report that my division is in possession of a payable gold and tin mine.

GAFFNEY'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, , Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

During the past quarter the prospects of the quartz miners in this subdivision have somewhat improved. The chief feature of encoul'agem(lnt ,has been the continued suceess of the prospecting proceeding in the

Golden Belt Gold Mining Company's low adit, ,wherein stone showing very coarse gold has been frequently met with in the drive northward on the reef. The prospects of that claim, upon, which an air-blower is now being .erected, with a vie:w of stoping upwards, and the owners of wliich have now upwards of 320 feet of backs on a vein 9 feet thick easily worked, must be considered very, good, and I trust to have payable yields to record from this mine next quarter:

The A. G. M. Co's. tribu~ers were fortunate at an early stage of their tribute to strike one of those patches of good stone so peculiarly the produce of the Class of reefs to which that company's ground belongs. Since then no washing up has taken place in this mine.

The Danabrog G. M. 00. completed their machinery early in the year, and put through some tons of stuff. which served to tcst the machinery, if not the reef they are working. The results of these crushings were purely nominal. The company is now putting up a rise as a preliminary to stoping out from the old workings, and doubtless will give its addition to our winter, yield of gold.

The Rose of Denmark tributers have not yet had payable ground, their yield being about 4 ·dwts., whereas 6t to 7 dwts. are required to give payable results; their prospects are improving. Dempseys are sinking their shaft and stoping downwards on thc reef, which is 4! feet thick, and experience no difficulty in keeping their ground dry. The Victoria, Hunt's, and Gaffney'S Creek are idle. '

The alluvial miners have·averaged for the past quarter about 33s, per week. I hear of no water being sold.

WOOD'S POINT SUBDIVISION.' ."; . ,llfr. A. B. Ainsworth, Mining Surveyor and 'Registrar.

Tbis subdivision presents at present no encouraging features in mining business. The Hope Mining Company have stopped for the present the sinking of their shafe, after reaching a depth of 184t feet from their adit, or 596 feet 6 inches from the surface. There is a slight falling off in the yield of gold this quarter, but it must be taken into consideration that it is the shortest quarter in the year, as so many holidays occur'in it.

The average yield from the quartz is very good, 76,000 tons yielding over 13~ dwts, per ton, and 1,000 tons of pyrites 2 ozs. 15 dwts. per ton. By th!l preceding tabular statement it will be seen that a considerable portion of the rich' quartz is taken from the deepest mines.

On the Hustler's Reef the United Pioneer Company have recently cut good stone at a depth of 570 feet, and the Great Extended ,Hustler's Company in sinking have c0l!le on a new formation at 800 feet.

Some of the progressive claims have ceased working; but it is noticeable that a number of steam-engines are in' course of erection in various parts of the district. , ,

" A .new reef (called the, Easter Reef) has just been discovered at the Whipstick, on the north side of Truck Gully, from which the prospector is obtaining 1 t oz. per ton. The next claim south of it has also struck gold.

About the beginning of. February water was very scarce, and some of the crushing machines had to stop work ,for a time. - '

. The quantity of water sold for mining purposes is 5,832,000 gallons at 4d. per 1,000 gallons, and 2,401,000 gallons at 2d. per 1,000 gallons. .

HEATHCOTE DIVISION AND W ARANGA SOUTH SUBDIVISION.

Mr. J. T. Strong,'Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

I regret that I have nothing to report of mining prospects in my division but continued and increasing depression. Thc only cheerful feature I have to notice is,that Messrs. Parker Brothers, situated on the Long Gully Reef, Heathcote, are erecting adequate machinery for working their ground effectively. •

WARANGA NORTH SUBDIVISION.

Mr. Henry Hicks, Mining Registrar.

The yield of gold obtained from the qua~tz mines witHin this division during this quarter 'shows a considerable decrease on the previous quarter's return. The cause of the falling off is easily explained, and is no proof of any depreciation in the value of the ylaiins ;, on'the contrary, the yield per ton of the quartz crushed is much above the average, an.d 'signs of increased activity are perceivable throughout the field, particularly so at Coy's Diggings. ,On visitin~ that locality:, during the pa.st week, I fO,und the pres~nt appearance of the mines suffiCiently good to justify the belIef that the YIeld of gold dUTIng, the ens, ulllg quarter ,wIll be very good. In reference to the falling off in the yield, the manager of Holmes's N uggety Gully machine, Rushworth, reports, ;C In consequence of an accident to the boiler, I have done no work during the quarter." The result of the stoppage of this machine, the only one on Rushworth, has been that the miners have heen unwilling to risk carting pOOl' stone to the nearest machine.at work, a distance in most cases of seven miles, and are waiting'the completion of repairs. The manager of the ,Balaclava Tribute Company reports, " Prospecting during most of: the "quarter "; crushing mill only occasionally at work. "At the Champion Reef, White Hills, a claim that contributed 'largely during the past year, a large quantity of sto'ne awaits crushing. '

The mines at present at work in this division are all'a,bove water-level; there is, howev~~,:a probability of som~ of the deep claims being shortly in work; already a company is being formed for working ,the Frenchman's Reef Rushworth, a claim that, above water-level, yielded rich stone. , . ' '

In the alluvial mines great depression has prevailed during the quarter, chiefly caused by the want of water' the puddling 'machines are all idle, and in many localities the miners have great difficulty in procuring even enough for dom~stic purposes; -

MARYBOROUGH MINING DISTRICT.

MARYBOROUGH DIVISION.

Mr; P. Virtue,Jun., Mining R~gi:strar. ALLUVIAL MINING. ::

The claim of the John Bright Company has been worked out, and' steps are now being taken to wind up the company. The claim of the Band of Hope Company, including machinery,.hl!-s been let on tribute, on an agreement which binds the tributers to pay the company 13 per cent. of the gross yield of gold obtained from the mine. The claim of the Queen Company, without machinery, has been let on tribute to four parties of tributers, on the followillg conditions :-No. 1 party pay 16 per cent.; No.2, 12 per cent.; No.3, 10 per cent.; and No.4, 10 per cent. The Duke and Timor Uompany struck the Chinaman's Flat deep lead during the ,quarter; and in six weeks obtained 1,045 ozs. 6 dwts. of gold; the water in the mine is very'heavy. All the gold returtied this quarter by the Count Bismarck Oompany is being obtained from the ground situate at the north end of ,the shaft:of their mine, while the ground at the south end is being opened (jut; but in about! six weeks more both parts of the mine will be fully worked, althou~h the water is very heavy. The Junction Company are engaged in maill driving. The faces of the claim of the New Magnum Company are looking very well.

QUARTZ MINING.

The London Chartered Bank have sold their claim on Blucher's Reef to the Great Extended Company, and the owners of' adjoining claims have also sold their claims to the above company, who now possess nearly the whole of Blucher's Reef. The company are possessed of ample means, and have already begun in good earnest to work their mine. The main shaft is down to 150 feet, and has been so laid as will enable the company to strike the reef at a depth of 1,000 or 1,200 feet from the surface. The e~timated co~t of proving the reef to a depth of 500 feet is £6,000; but as tbe company intend to place a thoroughly efficient crushing plant, and also a plant for treating pyrites, on ~he claim, the estimated total cost of proviug the mine, and providing for it suitable machinery, is £20,000. 'fhe workmg of this mine will confer a great benefit upon the district, and it is to be hoped that the courage and enterprise of the company will meet witb entire success.

The yields of gold from the Cambrian and Nelson claims have been very good, as they average more than an ounce per ton. It is intended to erect at once a crushing plant on the claim of the Cambrian Company, who during the quarter paid dividends amounting to £720.

The All N al,ions Company have established a crushing battery at Chinaman's Flat, which will doubtless prove a great public convenience. The claims of the 11ariner's Reef Company and the Bristol Hill Company still continue idle.

MAJORCA SUBDIVISION.

jJ:lr. John J:l. Murphy, M,.ining Registrar.

1 have the honor to report that during the past quarter there b,as been very little doing in mining in this subdivision; in fact, mining matters could hardly be at a lower ebh, for, with the exception of the Perseverance Company, Martell's paddock, Cockatoo, which have been paying good dividends during the past month, and a fair prospect obtained by the Duke of Edinburgh Company, Walker's paddock, McCallum's Creek, there is nothing of a cheering nature to report from this locality.

The New Greenock Park Tribute Company, Rocky Flat, have entirely suspended operations for the present. The Gladstone Company, Itocky Flat, are still idle, pending the purchase of machinery. The Grand Junction Company, Hooper's paddock, McCallum's Creek, have successfully completed the erection of their machinery, and will commence active operations in the course of a few days. The Kong Meng- and Columbia 'l'ribute C?mpany and the Reliance Company on ~he Hanoverian Lead are both lying idle. The tributers on Deed's Reef have relinquished mining operations completely.

AMHERST DIVISION.

Mr. Joseph Smitll, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

I have the honor to report a great improvement in the yield of Mount Greenock Lead, viz., the Hoffnung, Company, which only employ 21 men, have produced 6600206. of nuggety gold during the quarter.

. The Union Company, on the same lead, have also improved returns. The new company of Nichol's Freehold, on the same line, have almost completed the shaft. The small parties of alluvial miners through the division have been nearly idle during a great part of the·

quarter for the want of water. In quartz miuing the quantity crushed has been slightly in excess of previous quarters, but the average yield

is somewhat less than formerly. The new hattery of 12 stamps in Brown's Gully, near Lexton, is expected to be in a position to commence

crushing in the second week of April. Returna showing the Inoome 'derived/rom Water during the Quarter ending 31st March 1875.

AVOCA SUBDIVISION.

Mr •. Thos. McHugh, Mining Registrar. Quartz mining has never looked more hopefully, and it would seem as if the division is at length on the. eve'

of having its undoubted resources developed. Three tribute claims, each 100 yards on the course of the western lode, in the Monte Ohristo ComjJany?s property, have, since the crIlshings referred to in my rep<;>rt, got prospects considerably richer than thos') obtained from the stone already crushed. Hitherto, it was feared, and not ,withouV some slight show of experience, th'lt auriferous stone in the division would get poorer in proportion to depth. This theory has now been amply refuted in the case of the Monte Cl1riSto mine, and in the mines at Percydale. In'the former the lode has widened from 9 inches at 26 feet to from 3 to 5 feet at its present depth of over 100 feet; while the stone is estimated to yield It oz. per ton. There are four distinet lodes in the company's property, but the others have not been tested at any sufficient depth. A distinguishing feature in reefs east of the Avoca River, as contrasted with those in the Pyrenees-ouly about eight miles distant-is the fine quality of the gold, on which the banks advance without assay £2 28. per ounce, while the stone is sin!/:ularly free from galena, lead, or other of the base metals. A belt of reefs on the Monte Christo line has been traced from the W!Lrrior Company's property, Doctor's Creek, near Lexton, to Vale's Reef-a distance of seventeen miles; and not fewer than eight distinct lodes have been discovered within the last nine months hetween the }lonte Ohristo Lease' and the head of the dividing range eastward, a distance of about four miles. One of these, taken up within the last few days bya new party, yielded 4 dwts. per load, and the others from a dwt. up to .that figure, frolD stone taken from the surface t,o a depth of a few feet only., It is the opinion of practical miners that these reefs, if tested at a given depth, would prove as valuable as the Monte Christo property. 'lhl'o leases have been surveyed in the past week, one north and one south of this mine.

'rhe Perseverance Company's mine at Percyjiale is at present getting stone from the north level which, it is estimated, will yield an ounce p~r ton. ·CASTLEMAINE MINING DISTRICT.

CASTLEMAINE DIVISION.

M,·. Thomas L. Brown, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

There is a considerable decrease in the number of' quartz miners, some of the larger Companies having suspended operations; the demand for labor is very limited, and miners returned from harvesting have to resort to fossicking in the old workings for a living.

One new company, the Berth .. , have completed the erection of machinery and commenced to crush. The Englishmltll's and Warren's Company's machinery have been sold and removed from the district. Walker's Central Company continue driving at 300-foot level ltlld sinHng shaft (now 330 feet through the

lode), and have purchased and commeneed erecting the late Wheal Terrill machinery. The Wattle Gully Tribnte have sunk to 347 feet, and cross-cut at 340 feet, 16 feet west, striking the lode and

much water. 'rhe Ohewton United have put in cross· cut at 160-foot level to the reef, and are on payable stone. The Eureka Consols were' obtaining their gold at 3GO-foot level on the eastern (foot) wall, but a flookan thence

to the hanging or western wall has carried the gold there. 'l'his company have three gold-bearing lodes, one east and one west, contiguous to the main lode. ' ,

, The late Crown Nimrod is being worked as a co· operative company. . Negotiations are pending to w.ork the mines and machinery of the Ajax, Devonshir~, Energetic, Old Wattle

Gully, Specimen Gully, and 'others, on the co· operative principle.

}<'RYER'S CREEK DIVISION •

. Mr. }.lfark Amos, J11ining Surveyor and Registra,·.

POPULATION.

There has been but little alteration in the mining population, although a slight change in the number of quartz miners, owing to the suspension of operations by a few cowpanies, those previously employed tbereby being now engaged in alluvial mining. '

QUARTZ MINING

In general may be regarded as dull during the quarter, although Bome of the mines continue t.o pay handsomely, whilst others from necessity have been compelled to suspend operations, from want of proper machinery or insufficiency of funds.

PUDDLING.

, The returns from tp.is bi:anch of alluvial mining show very little change, and any marked improvement cannot be expected, unless we have new' groul1d discovered.

QUARTZ PROSPECTING.

In a prospecting claIm-of Js. Carah and Co., at Cobbler's Gully, a new reef or lode has been struck, which . appears to be highly auriferous. At a depLh of 14 feet the lode is 1 foot thick, gold showing sufficiently to lead to the· expectation of a yield of from 2 to 3 ozs. to the ton; there has been 110 crushing yet. The ground has been taken up both north and south, and experienced quartz miners believe this will prove to be an important discovery. The shaft is now down 23 feet only. ' .

The Black Hawk Company.-A new crushing plant has been erected upon the lease of this company, comprisi~g a battery of 15 stamps, driven, by a non-condensing engine of 25 horse-power, with a 3 feet stroke, the total cost £2,000. 'rhe company are now in a: posHion to crush their own quartz, and as ,they have a large body rUl1ning through their ground to the ,depth already tested, and proven to be payable, t.heir profits will be considerably augmented; and with the battery, &c., now erected, the company have every facility to test the mine at deeper· levels, with every prospect of even better yields thal1 hitherto obtained.'

The Daphne, neal' Specimen Hill.-The machinery and plant of this company is now being removed, which is: much to be regretted, as the ,compflny have been persevering for a long period without obtaining anything satisfactory.

The Southern Oross, Spring Gully.--The machinery and plant of this company have been removed from the district, the mining operations being 1).nprofitable for years, although at times considerable energy was displayed in the working of the mine.

1'he ~'l'ari1ta Gold Mining Company, Kangaroo Hill, have up to the present time been yery successful; a £10 dividend having been paid during the past three months; prospects at present time equally good.

The Fryers Company have suspended operations, pending re-organization, or other arrangements for the more eoonomical working of the mine.

QUARTZ.

Specimen Hill Company are driving north and south on 450-foot l<;vel; the'mine looks well; pyrites abundant and of rich quality. The prospects of the company are good; application for an extension of the lease on N.W. has been made. The average for the quarter was 7 dwts. 3'S9 grs. '

Cornish Quartz Minin.g Company.-The lower levels look well; having wrought from upper and lower levels, the average has not been qUIte up to the Jast quarter's yield; the expenses have, howe.er, been lessened; 100 men only being, now employed, whereas 125 found employment during the previous quarter. Quartz is obtained easier, and dividends continue to be paid as heretofore.

Argus Company are sinking a new shaft westerly,; the reef is now 4 feet. , North Cornish Company have dismissed tribute parties, and resume operations on account of the company,

with hopeful prospects. Jeffries quartz mill, at Mauritius Reef, was destroyed by fire, supposed to be the work of an incendiary. The item A (pnge ll) includes King ,and vVillard's party, Bongerghilenas' party, Clapham's party, Cornish

and Crown party, and Liberty Reefparty, from Daylesford, Hepburn, and Dry Diggings; average 6 grains nearly., 'Vater has been scarce, barely 50 heads ohtainable, at 15s. to 20s.

ALLUVIAL.

Sailor Prince Gold Mining Company, Sebastopol, are in the tunnel 4,600 feet from mouth, now 300 feet from grass; the wash is 3 feet high and 20 to 30 feet 'iride. During the quarter they drove 400 feet, erected 400 sets in cross drive, and 50 sets in main drive; also, ill consequence of a settlement in old workings, repairs to 50 sets of timbering became necessary. , Prince Extended Company are in 3,500 feet, and daily expect to break into wash, tIle reef being softer, and water increasing.

In alluvial washdirt table (page 18), the item B includes Hunt and party, Folette and party, Federal Tunnel party, Rolin and party, Cugley and party, Fox and party, McKinnon and party, Respini and party, Yuille and party, Meskill and party, Reynolds and party, 'rarsning and party, and 1'>'1 cQueen and part,y, from all parts of the division.

, The item C includes Hunt, Johnston, \fatson, Stevenson, Priee, Shimmin, Fairbrother, Simons, Perry, Clapham, Davis, Campbell, Jones, Duff, Mathieson, Corinella 1:'addock, and their respective co-operative parties.

The Chinese work in all the old gullies and creeks, where Ii ttle labor is necess&ry.

TARADALE AND KYNETON SUBDIVISIONS.

Mr. Thomas Orwin, Mining Registrar.

There has been no new discovery or new claims started in this division during the quarter. The United Kingdom claim still yields handsome returns. For the past three months thoy have obtained 1,003

ozs. of gold; last week they paid a dividend of £50 per sixteenth share; the gold is chiefly obtained at a shallow depth.

The Extended Napier is looking better. The company fully expect a continnation of payable stone for Bome time to come; their prospects are more enconraging than usual, as all the shoots of gold improve as they go down.

Another effort is being made to ,float the Adventure on the Back Creek, west of the township of' Taradale; it was formerly known as the Sailor's Reef, then the Adventure; it is now to be called the Cornet. The shaft is 330 feet deep, aud there is a good winding and crushing plant on the claim.

From appearance, there is no probability of the Energetic claim at Lauriston commencing' again. The Lord ;llalmsbury Company expect, soon to be able La fully employ their four puddling machines; they

have a large qnantity of water ,to contend ,against, but have little difficulty in keeping it down, as their pnmps and machinery work well. ,

The Ironstone Hill Company, in sinking their shuft 77 feet in soft reef, have Rtruck two quartz leaders. The company are in search of the United Kingdom Reef. 'In prospecting for it they have sunk a shaft 82 feet, and opened out at that level, and driven 60 feet, frequently orossing small leaders. 'l'he indications are favorable to their diseoveringthis rich reef, which no doubt passes through their ground.

TARRANGOWER DIVISION.

JrJr. Robert Nankivell, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

Tbe yield of gold has fallen off considel'llbly during the quarter, owing partly to the stoppage of the Union Company's mine ,for the last month, for the wallt of water. The manager, however, in the mean time has been busily engaged in cleaning the machinery, clearing out the dam, &c., and is now waiting for a rainfall, there tieing no other source of supply for water. One other cause of the great faIling off in this quarter's returns is the poverty of onr mines generally.

For the want of funds, in some of our most prosperous mines in time past, operations have been suspended; the reefs have been cut off by dykes, and the eompanies, having no reserve fund OJ' calling power on the shareholders, are unable at, present to prosecute a search for the lost lodes. These remarks apply especially to the Nelson, German Reef, Vittoria, and South Eaglehawk Companies. Others of our mining comp, mies, viz., the Eagleha'irk Limited, the Wellington, tho Alliance, the Speculation, tile New Enterprise, and Beehive Companies, have been for some time past struggling hard, and expending large sums of money in sinking and driving, to find the lost rich lodes. The Eagleha'irk Limited 00mpany are now sinking their shaft below the 615-foot level; the reef here is from 10 to 12 feet thick; occasionally good golden stone is found, but not hitherto in paying quantities; the prospects, however, are very promising'. . The Eaglehawk Union, the Central, the North Eaglehawk United, and the Linscott's Tribute Companies, are the only payinO' mines at present. The Central Company, during the quarter, have crushed 145 tons of stone from the .570-foot level, "'which yielded 797 ozs. 18 dwts of gold; the prospects in this mine are still good, and regular crnshings in futnre are expected. In the Linscott's Tribuie and the North Eaglehawk United Companies' mines the prospects ,are also very promising. The Cookman's Heef Company have sent 60 tons of qual·tz to the crushing mill; the stone looks well, bm the result is not yet known. ,

In alluvial mining there is nothing new to report. The Chinese, with the exception of about 40 that are 'working in the Loddon River, are employed in was1ling slndge and tailings in the creeks and gullies. The European -diggers are chiefly employed in fossicking in the old diggings.,

NotwithstandinO" the small returns of yields of gold from quartz, the prospects of the district have iillJ:roved during the latter end ~f the quarter. Oram's Reef, ,which 'mB. all but abandoned, has given th? handsome Yleld of 163 ozs. from 9 tons of stone. The Union Company s mme, Dlamond Creek, after nearly collapsmg" has also st!uck good stone, which has not yet been crushed; and the reef at Anderson's Creek known as Stlggant s, from WhICh I could obtain no returns is said to have yielded 400ozs. from about 100 tons of stone. The reefs at Warburton and Reef ton, Upper Yar;a, are all progressing towards development, and a crushing machine is being erected at the latter place. I trust I shall have a better report to make next quarter.

Alluvial claims at Anderson's Creek arc also yielding good wages; but the dry lead at BoddIe's Creek has only proved payabic in the leased area" and the alluvial workings at Queenstown are chiefly confined to the Chinese, who are quite reticent as to theil' earnings. . • .

The prevailing dullness of the mining interest througllOut the colony has extended to thIS distrICt, and there have been no applications for lenses or claims during the quarter. '

BLUE MOUNTAIN NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. Gralwm McPherson, Mining Registrar.

The South Cora Lynn Company have suspended operations, pending the arrival of machinery. '1'he Cora Lynn Company are still idle. The Roth~child Company are in full work, and raising payable stone. The mining manager expects to

recommence in another week. The last trial crushing of 160 tons of stone gave a return of 107 ozs. 5 dwts. There is very little doing in alluvial mining at present.

ARARAT MINING DISTRICT.

ARARAT DIVISION.

Mr. Ferdinand M. Krause, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

Owing to the continuance of the drought, the water supply for gold-washing purposes is now quito exhausted, and sluicin~ and puddling operations are almoRt wholly suspended. There has been, in consequence, a considerable falling off in the yield of gold during the quarter.

The Maryborough Company, on Commissioner's Hill, have not yet recovered from their financial difficulties, and no work has been done since ,the close of last year. The newly-formed leasehold company at Cathcart have begun sinking a shaft, and entered upon negotiations for the purchase of steam machinery. Another new venture is that of the Por,t Curtis Slui~ing Company, started with the objec~ of sluicing the drift-:appin~ on Po~t Curtis Hill. The wat~r supply IS to be obtamed from the Opossum 'Gully reserVOir, and an aqueduct, mcludmg a timber flume 1,310 feet III length, is in course of construction. The Cement Company at Londonderry, engaged in working the 70.foot lead, have been obliged to discontinue action during the last week or two, from want of water for crushing. •

QUARTZ ~IINING.

With the exception of the Sir George Bowen Company, at Campbell's, and a single co-operative party on Moore's Reef, the result of whose efforts is given in the tables, this class of mining has but few representatives at present. The Rhymney Company, after a long stoppage, are about to resume work under a new management.

PLEASANT CREEK DIVISION.

JIr. H. C. Bate, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.,

QUARTZ 'MINING.

The only events of importance which have occurred during the quarter, and which are worthy of note, are the erection of new steam winding and pumping' machinery hy the .Carolina Company, and the favorable yields obtained by the Extended Cross Reef and the Crown Cross Heef United Companies. The Pleasant Creek Cross Reef Company also still maintains its high character by the rich yield of gold obtained from it.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

Very good ground has been discovered in the mine of the Ophir Company, at the Deep Lead, and a rush of miners took place immediately to the west of the mine. NOlie of the parties have as yet been able to bottom the ground, however, on account of water, but good returns have been obtained from the 'Ophir Company's min·e.

The Band of Hope and other companies have been much retarded in their operations for want of a sufficient supply of water, the season having been very dry.

- BARKLY DIVISION.

Mr. H. C. Bate, iJlinirig Sur've,1/or and Registrar.

Very little mining work has been done in this division during the quarter, and the number of miners, as will be seen by the schedule of population, is considerahly diminished, many having turned their attention to other branches of industry .

. Operatioll8 at the Wimmera Company's mine have been abandoned, and so also have they, for the present, in thc mme of the Kill'll Kara Company, but an attempt is, 1 believe, to be made to again start work in the latter.

No new prospecting claims have been regislercj, nor has any new ground Leen opened.

Mr. Hugh St. II. Blair, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. I have the hopor to report that nothing of importance has occurred during the quarter. ' At Freestone Creek, many of the mines have temporarily given up work, until the result of the Deep Lead

Company's test of the ground is known. As soon as the pump is up aud the water got under, which is expected in two or three weeks, it is hoped ,the result will be encouraging, which will give a fresh impetns to mining here.

STRINGER'S CREEK DIVISION.

Mr. E. S. Gutteridge, Mining Registrar.

The Walhalla and Long Tunnel Companies have been crushing steadily during the past quarter, with their usual very satisfactory results, giving good dividends each month. The latter company has now stopped breaking out and crushing stone for the present, and are engaged erecting a more powerful winding engine, and thoroughly repairing their battery and other machinery; it is expected that crushing will bc resumed in about five weeks.

North Gippsland Company have driven Ii level at 324 feet below adit, 35 feet ,north and 10 feet south of crOBs-cut. No lode has yet been met with. At the north end of the level a rise was put up nearly through the block, but onry met with a thin vein of stone, showing that the reef had wedged out. This company has now made arrangemeI\ts to purchase the two adjoining claims south, viz., the Golden Fleece a,nd Molesworth; the whole will be amalgamated, and works carried on on a more extensive seale. .

The Walhalla Copper Mining Company ha,ve now driven their lower tunnel 260 feet. The driving has been very hard, the main portion being through quartzite and slate.

'£he lease of the Reality Company having become forfeitcd, the ground has been taken up by a new company, and now named the" Never Fear." .1'hey have struck a good lode six feet wide. It is very hard and solid, and shows gold freely throughout. They intend having'a trial erushing shortly.

Wilson and Bartholds, at the Aberfeldy River. have crushed but little stone during the past quarte!', through being short of water. They have just completed a crushing of 169 tons, but have not yet washed up, so the returns ~~~~~ ,

The Waterloo Company, late Gippslander, Aberfeldy, have purchased a battery, and eommenced the removal of same.

Mining in all its branches has been in a very depressed state during the quarter. The returns being very poor from the Cross Reef Company, Pheasant Creek, for the previous quarter, only a

few men have been at work in the mine, who are following the course of the leader, which shows good gold, but is very small; the manager appears to think they will yet obtain a payable reef.

Crossover Diggings.-The Albion Quartz Mining Company have agaiu resumed work, with every prospect of success. Alluvial mining has dwindled to mere fossicking. It is intendcd to re-work the old creeks when the wet weather sets in by ground sluicing.

Lower Tangil.-The Pioneer Company have ceased work. A very good sample of gold was obtained in this mine, but not payable, and the company have not sufficient funds to fully prospect the ground. I am informed they intend winding the company up.

The Hungarian United Company, late Jumping Sailor, Cement Hill, have struck a fine gutter about liOO feet in the hill, about 3 feet of wash, good coarse gold running through it. Another claim has been taken up adjoining the above. After sinking a depth of 110 feet, they were compelled to abandon the shaft, owing to immense flint boulders, which they could not get through, powder taking no effect; they are now putting in a tunnel.

No work doing in the river or creeks.

Mining in this subdivision has been dull for the quarter ended; not many of the quartz claims at work; those engaged being the Aurora Borealis, Albert, and Victoria (late Luck and Leisure).

The Aurora Borealis Company are making great preparations preparatory to crushing, and are carrying on their works energetically; their tunnel they have driven to the length of 220 feet, and, their shaft is down about 190 feet. They have removed the Phcenix plant from Bendoo; the exeavatious are complcte for its reception, and they are now engaged erecting the plant. Thcy have also other machinery on its way from NIelbourne. The race for the supply of water for the battery and other purposes (the distance of about It miles) is also complete, so that in the oourse of a few months I would suppose they will be crushing stoue,

The Albert.-This company's claim, which has been in litigation for some time, has been mutually settled, and the company, I believe, intend placing a good number of shares in the market, to enable them to prosecute their works on a larger scale. I am informed by the manager they have agaiu found the main or golden reef-which was lost, oaused by a jump or break in it-and which is looking reliable.

The Victoria (late Luck and Leisnrel.-This company are engaged driving and prospecting this reef, whieh has been so long idle, but with what success I have not been able to ascertain.

The alluvial portion of mining is much the same as stated in my previous quarter's returns, nothing new having been found. '

TARWIN SUBDIVISION.

Mr. John H. Sandilands, Mining Registrar.

The only notable occurrence in alluvial mining here for the past quarter has been the extraordinary find of the tribute party occupying No, 3 and 4 block of the Prospectors Company's ground, who during the four weeks ending the 20th March cleaned up 1,612 ozs. 11 dwts. of gold, viz. :-For weeks ending 27th February, 4,.<1.6 ozs. 19 dwts.; 6th March, 438 dZ8. 12 dwts.; 13th March, 401 ozs, 13 dwts.; 20th March, 32,50zs. 7 dwts. All the gold was obtained from a very small area of ground; iu two instances patches of 127 ozs. and 111 ozs. were washed from what they call prospects, or buckets full of dirt. They puddled during the time three machines of washdirt a week, and the yields therefrom varied from 32 to 164 ozs. The ground was closely contiguous to the old works of the

prospector's party that had been 'put in three years ago; and in one case several good patches (in all over 100 ozs.) were obtained from under old timber put on by that party (the ol'igin:1.l prospectors) where the bottom h:1.d not been' properly taken up at that time and a htyer of dirt from two to foll!' inches thick had been left. The explanation of this is that the former party were working ill sludge and watm', having nothing but windlass power wherewith to drain the mine. The yields have fallen off considerably the last week, but are still good, although the men say there is no doubt the best of this run has been taken out .. 'l'here are but few other alluvial mines here getting any gold at all.

QUARTZ MINING.

I have very little to report in this brauch of mining. The Golden Bar and the No.1 South claims ar(both getting some very good quartz. These two arc the only quartz claims that are working in this subdivision.

THARAI,GON SUBDIVISION.

111fT. Charles Denis, lI:lining Registrar. Since my last report prospecting is being carried on with more vigor. I have heard lately of several new finds

of gold from different localities of thi$ divisioll, but as yet they have not been verified. The number of miners has also increased. Tin has been found lately 011 the east side of the Tral'algon Creek, within two miles of the township of rrraralgon.
