Your exam
a mini guide for parents &teachers
(& candidates)
Don't worry aboutpauses betweenyour pieces – theexaminer will bewriting and will tell you when to start your next piece.
The examiner may stopyou during a piece if he or she has heard
enough to make ajudgement.
Make sure you arecomfortable before you
begin – if the stool ormusic stand is the
wrong height don't beafraid to adjust it
or ask for help.
It's fine to ask theexaminer if you canwarm up by playing a scale or a few bars of a piece.
Remember, yourexaminer is lookingforward to hearing
you perform.
Don't be surprised ifthere are two people
in the exam room –only one will beexamining you.
You can choose to do theexam in any order – just
let the examiner know.
Use the time before theexam to get your musicand instrument ready –you can warm up silently by moving your fingers or blowing through your instrument.
Feeling nervousbefore an exam is natural... Try smiling as you go into the exam room – it will help you relax.
