In May 2009 the first case of swine flu was reported in the UK and measures were put in place to stop a mass pandemic. To combat the spread of the virus a number of both medical and hygienic physical barrier practices were introduced. Which proved to be the most effective measure in helping to control this recent swine flu outbreak?

Primary

QualitativeQuantitative

Primary sources are original materials. They are from the time period involved and have not been filtered through interpretation or evaluation. Surveys carried out as part of a project are also primary sources, e.g. an interview with a medical professional.

Secondary

Secondary sources are accounts written after the event with the benefit of hindsight. They comment on and discuss the original evidence or research, e.g. a book about the spread of flu.

Tertiary sources compile, analyse and digest primary and secondary sources. They tend to be factual and not discursive, e.g. an encyclopaedia of health.

Tertiary

Quantitative sources mainly consist of numerical data, i.e. the results of surveys, experiments, official statistics.

Qualitative sources are mainly descriptive and often involve analysis of the written or spoken word, i.e. interviews, diaries, narratives.
