Resolving Stressful Situations Using Emotional Intelligence
1. Become aware of the feelings and emotions you are experiencing—upset, anger, stress, tension, pain, etc.
2. Focus inwardly on that place in your body rather than on the external event or person—inward focus reduces stress and creates a time interval for self evaluation.
3. In this time interval, ask yourself: “Is this conflict about the external event/person or my own programming?”
4. If the answer is Yes to internal programming, then you can control a detrimental reaction—and exercise choice involving a personally appropriate response.
5. When you experience relief and possibly personal transformation, ask yourself: “What did I learn about that conflict that will help me to respond more appropriately in the future?”
Maximizing Your Impact Through Small Acts of Mindfulness
• Practice listening more than talking.
• Think about what you disagree with—rather than reject it outright.
• Take responsibility for your role in a conflict.
• Create a space between an experience and your response.
• Thank the people who have contributed most to your success.
• Say only positive compliments to the people you work with for one week.
• Be open to change (or transformation) as you engage others.
• Human interaction is a powerful learning experience.
On a scale from 1-100, if you implemented some of these ideas, how would you then rate yourself based on how you'd
show up each day in every area of your life?
