candidate of the PartidoDemokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), has told hissupporters: “Gusto kongtawagan, Pope, putangina ka, umuwi ka na” afterhe was stuck for 5 hours inheavy traffic during thePontiff ’s first state andpastoral visit to Manila inJanuary.

He said he even peedin his car and also blamedthe government’sincompetency for thetraffic. While hissupporters applauded hiscursing of the Pope, manyFilipinos, mostlyChristians, were nothappy with Duterte’sfoulmouthed statementon the Pope.

The Catholic BishopsConference of thePhilippines alsocondemned Duterte’sexpletive statement andcalled it a “great shame.”

Nung Ajihil, a Muslimpeace advocate inZamboanga City, said“I'm no Christian, but it'stoo much to showdisrespect calling thePope with such vulgarityfor one aspiring to bePresident. Kabastusannaman yan.”

P r e s i d e n t i a lspokesman EdwinLacierda also reacted toDuterte’s cursing of thePope. “Mayor Duterte,you can say all you wantabout politicians, but youdon't curse my Pope

After cursing Pope, Duterte apologizesFrancis,” he said on hisTwitter account.

Manny Piñol,Duterte’s political ally, said the tough-takingmayor has apologized forhis expletive directed atthe Pontiff. “I can nevercurse my Pope. I wascursing at incompetence. If it was taken by some inthat light, I sincerelyapologize. I will continueto curse so our sufferingnation takes action,”Piñol quoted thepolitician as saying.

Piñol also defendedDuterte and said so muchissue has been raised overthe statement made bythe mayor. “I was thereduring the proclamationand I heard every wordthat he said because I wastaking notes. While thestatement about thetraffic and the Pope's visitsounded awkward, it wasobvious that the use of thecuss word which is acommon street lingo wasnot directed at PopeFrancis.”

“It was merely anexpression that comesalmost naturally fromDuterte's mouth andpeppers almost all of hispublic discourses…heused it in jest to expresshis exasperation anddisappointment over theinability of government toaddress Metro Manila'straffic problem,” he said.

In a statement postedon Duterte’s Facebookaccount, it said thepolitician expressed

sadness and regret thatthe part of his speechmentioning Pope Francisin relation to themonstrous traffic gridlockin January, came across asbeing disrespectful toPope Francis. It wasfarthest from his mindand was never hisintention, it said.

“He acknowledgesthat he should haveexplained better his pointon the matter of thatmonstrous trafficgridlock. His strongstatement on theincompetence of those ingovernment to addressthe traffic problem inMetro Manila was hisexpression of anger borneout of the helplessness ofthe millions ofcommuters sufferingfrom this daily gridlock.”

“It was neverintended to be directed tothe person of His HolinessPope Francis, who has hisutmost respect. It was outof exasperation at theinutility of thefunctionaries ingovernment not onlyduring that historic visitof Pope Francis but at thedaily sufferings of allcitizens in Metro Manilaup to this moment. MayorRody also fullyunderstands thereactions of many who, atthe very least, aredispleased anddisappointed at thisunfortunate andregrettable incident.”(Mindanao Examiner)

INSTRINSTRINSTRINSTRINSTRUCTIONS:UCTIONS:UCTIONS:UCTIONS:UCTIONS:1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two 12-cup muffin tins with cupcake papers.2. Sift together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt into a medium bowl; setaside. In a small bowl, mix food coloring and cocoa powder to form a thin pastewithout lumps; set aside.3. In a large bowl, using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat butter and sugar togetheruntil light and fluffy, about three minutes. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then beat invanilla and the red cocoa paste, scraping down the bowl with a spatula as you go.Combine the buttermilk and oil. Alternately add the flour mixture & buttermilkmixture to the butter mixture.4. In a small bowl, mix vinegar and baking soda… it will fizz! (Fun!) Add vinegarmixture to the cake batter and stir well to combine. Using an ice cream scoop, fillcupcake cups with cake batter (they should be 2/3 – 3/4 full). You may not fill allthe cups, I ended up with 20 cupcakes. Place muffin tins on the middle rack of apreheated 350 degree oven. Bake for approximately 20-22 minutes, rotating panshalfway through. Cupcakes are done when a toothpick inserted in the center comesout clean. Check early and don’t overbake!5. Cool the cupcakes in their tins for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack for 10-15 minutes, allow to cool completely before frosting. Frost cupcakes with yourfavorite cream cheese frosting or butter-cream frosting.6. Top Red Velvet Cupcakes with shredded coconut, Red Dots, white non-pareils,and crushed candy canes. Eat up!

his message delivered byhis father, Vice GovernorSakur Tan, praised thosewho participated in theWeek of Peace and calledon the public to continueadvocating for peace inMindanao.

“To depict peace in aconcrete form or to have adiscourse on the subjectlike an appreciation of amotorcycle or a painting, for example, is quitedifficult as there is no setmodel or formula able tomanifest peace in physicalshape. Despite that fact, letus derive wisdom from thewords of those who in oneway or the other made ajourney in the road topeace and freedom, forboth are intertwined,” thegovernor said as he quotedMahatma Gandhi, whofought the British forindependence of Indiathough peaceful means.
