Mental Health in low-income countries!Context ! Poorly developed and

disconnected system elements!

Outcomes!

  MH as a public health, social and economic development issue!

  Effective and affordable interventions and service models are available!

  MH is a low political and social priority!

  Weak investment!  Low skill in policy

development and implementation!

  Weak governance !  Low MH literacy!  Low demand for mental

health services !

  Weak investment. Shortage of everything – skilled workers, facilities, drugs, etc.!

  Undeveloped information systems to support planning!

  Geographic maldistribution of available workforce!

  Disciplinary imbalance: doctor and nurse dominated!

  Hospital-centred!  Poorly organised and

marginalised consumers, carers, civil society!

!

  Narrow population coverage!  Very wide gap between best

and worst MH services!  Low access (geographic,

economic, linguistic, cultural)!  Stigma, discrimination,

social exclusion!  Mental health training is

unattractive for most disciplines!

  Lack of locally relevant evidence for policy and practice!

  Widespread and systematic abuse of human rights !
