CHARACTER EDUCATION CHARACTER EDUCATION THROUGH THE ARTS...THROUGH THE ARTS... - from Mrs. Lauretti-Martin

ECOSCHOOLS—SCHOOLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Forest Manor is participating in the EcoSchools program, which is developed by the TDSB to support schools in be-coming more environmentally responsible. One way we’re implementing EcoSchools is through student-led initiatives, such as the Blue Box Collection Program. On a daily basis, student leaders collect and recycle juice and milk boxes from lunch time. As well, we have had yard clean-ups, and “lights out” patrollers checking for lights be-ing left on in classrooms. We have also had art challenges inviting students to design promotional posters, which we have included in this newsletter. For more information about the EcoSchools program, visit http://ecoschools.tdsb.on.ca.

OUR GRADE 2 TRIP TO THE SCIENCE CENTRE - By Jagriti, Joanne, Shreya On January 20th, the Grade 2’s visited the Ontario Sci-ence Centre. It was a lot of fun! One of our favourite parts was when one of the scientists named Martin put a special powder in a glass jar and put water with it, then it became like Jello! So, we saw a liq-uid turn to a solid right before our eyes! In another experi-ment, we saw Martin wearing boots that firefighters wear. So, we learned that firefighters wear boots with special insulation so that they don’t get hurt. We also got to go to a fun play area with a store, and a cash register that we could use. There was a music area where kids could play and change the music and lighting.

AUTHOR’S CORNER... During the month of January, our school’s character trait was TEAMWORK. Here is what some students from Mrs. Cresta’s grade 5 class had to say about teamwork: All About Teamwork By: Hong Teamwork is the key to good sportsmanship. It’s NOT about arguing, fighting and bad communication. Team-work really gets you far in the game because you look out for each other. It’s an advantage because if you fail, then your friend is there backing you up. Teamwork is everywhere. Take firefighting, for exam-ple. How can you fight a fire by yourself?! Who’s go-ing to go in to rescue the people inside? So, you see, teamwork is important everywhere. In games, in sports and even in work.

Teamwork: Cooperative work done by a group of peo-ple. By: Ayesha

Hi! My name is Ayesha Hashmi and I’m here to talk to you about…you guessed it: Teamwork !!! Teamwork can be shown in different ways. Either brainstorming ideas for a group project or at gym when you’re playing against a team and trying to win. Teamwork is needed to succeed in both situations and in all situations where you are required to work in a team.

This is my own definition of the word ‘teamwork’: Teamwork is listening, sharing, and working together to achieve a common goal.

TEAMWORK By: Shiv Teamwork is this month’s character trait. Teamwork can do anything. When a group of people get together thy can do great things. For our school, the mascot is a wolf. Wolves use team-work to bring down their prey. The wolves represent us. The wolves running represent us running to our goals. The prey represents our targets and expectations.

So, just like wolves, teamwork is a very important part of our life!
