STOP Foreign AidTHEY CAN HATE US FOR FREE

By JoshuaCook

Jan Helfeld, investigative journalist, asked Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) if he was against foreign aid:

“No,” Graham said. “Smart foreign aid, I’m against giving money to dictators, but we must invest in the world. Africa, George Bush did a great thing by helping people avoid being deci-mated by AIDS and malaria. I do believe the 1% of the budget we have in foreign assistance needs to be maintained.”

“But foreign aid is redistribution of wealth right?” asked Helfeld. “No, it’s not,” said Gra-ham. “It’s helping friends and allies at the time you need friends and allies.”

Reuters reported that the U.S. State Depart-ment and foreign aid budget escaped devas-tating cuts in a fiscal 2012 spending plan that Congress has approved, and according to the Huffington Post, the United States recently has

continued to pump around $50 billion in aid to other countries each year.

Ironically, those countries who receive the most foreign aid from U.S. taxpayers are the ones who hate America the most.

Here are the top recipients of U.S. foreign aid who harbors anti-American sentiments accord-ing to a recent survey by the Pew Research Cen-ter.

Foreign Aid isRedistributionof Wealth

In contrast to Graham’s statement above, South Carolina State Senator Lee Bright told theGreenvillePost.com,

“Foreign aid is, in the strictest sense, a form of redistribution of wealth, since it is a transfer of wealth from one

group of people to another. As such, it should only be permissible when the action is vital to our national interests.

For instance, we should not be in the practice of sending Ameri-can treasure abroad when the re-cipients are historically inclined to violent, anti-American action

(i.e. the Muslim Brother-hood). There needs to

be an attitude of “America first” that keeps in

mind the consequences

of inappropriate foreign entangle-

ments and the buildup of national debt.”

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) echoes Bright’s

statement when recently asked if he is in favor of taxing Ameri-

can citizens in order to give it to for-

eigners.“I think there are so many

problems with that. And I think a lot of Americans have a problem with that, too.”

Concerned citizens continue to voice their frustration with the U.S. government funding countries with ties to radical Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood, while states in the U.S. continue to suffer economically.

Senator Graham’s Home State Suffers Economically

Recently Forbes.com called South Carolina one of the 11 ‘Death Spiral’ states.

Forbes tells its readers not to invest, buy bonds, or buy real estate in South Carolina because its taxes are project-ed to increase in order to support all the residents that depend on the gov-ernment. Forbes’ math is simple. What gets you on this “death spiral” lists is when you have more takers than mak-ers, when you have more people de-pendent of the government via welfare and government jobs than private sec-tor jobs. Liberty-minded conservatives are calling on Congress to stop funding other foreign countries with taxpayer dollars, especially when the U.S. con-tinues to sink deeper into debt.

During the 2012 Republican prima-ry, Ron Paul said,

“Foreign aid should be the easiest thing to cut. It’s not authorized in the Constitution that we can take money from you and give it to particular coun-tries around the world. To me, foreign aid is taking money from poor people in this country and giving it to rich peo-ple in poor countries.”

Nobel Prize-winning economist Mil-ton Friedman said that “government debt is an unpaid tax bill and must be paid by confiscating money from future workers or from private property.”

America has a $17 trillion dollar deficit and Americans are disturbed by their government continuing to print money to subsidize foreign pow-ers while stacking the financial burden onto their children and future genera-tions. Americans are also disturbed by the Obama administration not follow-ing U.S. laws regarding foreign aid.

The U.S. is providing hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign aid to some of the world’s richest countries - while at the same time borrowing bil-lions back, according to report seen by Congress.

The Congressional Research Service released the report last month which shows that in 2010 the U.S. handed out a total of $1.4bn to 16 foreign countries that held at least $10bn in Treasury securities.

Four coun-tries in the world’s top 10 richest received for-eign aid in 2010 with China receiving $27.2m, In-dia $126.6m, Brazil $25m, and Russia $71.5m.

Mexico also received $316.7m and Egypt $255.7m.

And yet despite the massive outgo-ings in foreign aid, the receiving coun-tries hold trillions of dollars in U.S. Treasury bonds.

Brazil held $193.5bn, Russia $127.8bn, India $39.8bn, Mexico $28.1bn and Egypt had $15.3bn.

Foreign aid is earmarked for causes including HIV/AIDs prevention, com-bating weapons of mass destruction, fighting tuberculosis, and counter-ter-

has caused grave concern, with Senator Tom Coburn, R-Okla, who requested the report seen by Fox News, call-ing the policy “dangerous.”

In a written statement Sen-

ator Coburn said: “Borrowing money from countries who receive our aid is dangerous for both the donor and re-cipient.

“If countries can afford to buy our debt, perhaps they can afford to fund assistance programs on their own.

No one thought Eric Cantor, the House major-ity leader, could actually lose. His primary chal-lenge in his suburban Richmond district, from a local economics professor named David Brat, was thought to be nominal. No sitting majority leader has lost a primary since the position was invent-ed in 1899. Cantor, though unloved by many in his party and in Congress, was seen as the speak-er-in-waiting whenever John Boehner decided, or was forced, to hang it up.

But all those assumptions went out the win-dow Tuesday night, when Cantor shockingly lost—and by a wide margin. With 97 percent of the vote counted, Brat had 56 percent of the vote to Cantor’s 44 percent.

By Richard MatzPublisher

Why are so many movie stars liberals and why do many of them support socialist agendas?

I can’t figure it out. Our capitalist system has allowed movie stars to achieve their dreams here in the United States. Here and only here can they achieve those dreams and enjoy all that comes with those successes yet those very people who have profited off our capitalist sys-tem are supporting socialist politicians and ideas.

It makes no sense. Do they feel guilty that they have so much that they don’t want anyone else to live the American dream now?

Socialism equals the redistribution of wealth. Here’s a creative approach to redistributing wealth as offered in a lo-cal newspaper recently.

“Today on my way to lunch, I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read ‘Vote Obama, I need the money.’ I laughed.

“Once inside the restaurant, my server had on an ‘Obama 12’ necktie. Again I laughed, as he had given away his political preference also. Just imag-ine the coincidence.

“When the bill came I decided not

Liberal movie starsto tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redis-tribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief when I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need — the homeless guy outside.

“The server angrily stormed from my sight. I went outside, gave the home-less guy $10, and told him to thank the

server inside as I had decided that a homeless person deserved the tip mon-ey more.

“The homeless guy was grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific re-distribution experiment, I realized the homeless guy was grateful for money he did not earn. The waiter was angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient need-

ed the money more.“I guess redistribution of wealth is

an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.”

From MilitaryTimes.comThe Labor Department has pulled

back — at least temporarily — from new minimum wage rules that had led several fast-food restaurants to end their contracts on military instal-lations and prompted others to pos-sibly follow suit.

Labor officials are “reevaluat-ing” wage determinations for fast food workers and expect to “reissue industry-specific fast food wage de-terminations in the near future,” ac-cording to a departmental announce-ment sent to interested parties and

contracting offices. At issue are recently implemented

Labor Department rules for fast food workers on federal contracts under the Service Contract Act that require an increase in their minimum wage, varying by region.

The rules also require payment of new, additional “health and welfare” benefits at a rate of $3.81 per hour.

In a request for a waiver from these new wage rules regulations, the Navy noted that in six areas in Florida, California and Virginia, the increase in the new mandated hourly

wage ranges from 72 percent to 76 percent.

Last year, DoL decided that fast food workers under federal contracts would be subject to these require-ments, and included the codes in their wage determinations, although they had not been in the past. DoL has now removed the codes for fast food workers from these wage deter-minations.

With those rules now removed, contracting agencies will have to sub-

Every morning you look into your closet, think about what YOU feel like wearing, and get dressed. And what you pick from your closet each day is probably based on how you’re feeling, where you plan to be, and the weath-er forecast. The chances are good that your marriage doesn’t usually play a factor in your daily wardrobe decision.

But for just one day this week, con-sider your spouse when you’re getting dressed.

What does your spouse like you to wear?

What’s your spouse’s favorite color to see you in?

How about wearing the sweater your spouse bought you?

Does your spouse like when you wear a particular shirt with a certain pair of pants?

Do you remember which undergar-ments you wore on your last romantic anniversary?

Does your spouse have a favorite dress or tie for you to wear?

Your assignment this week is to get

Getting dressed for your marriage

dressed with your spouse in mind and, if your spouse will appreciate it, to let them know that you did so.

Seems like a little thing, doesn’t

it? In some ways it IS little, but in other ways it’s HUGE. Let me explain.

Most people live with themselves at the center of their consciousness. Whether it’s deciding what to wear or where to sit, most people think about themselves. But the key to succeeding in a lasting marriage (as a team) is to shift the center of your consciousness from yourself to your marriage. That’s what it means to be CONSIDERATE...to ‘consider’ your spouse; not just con-sider them out of sensitivity to them (although that’s important too), but consider them ALWAYS. In a sense, that’s a measure of couple’s closeness...to what degree are you in each others thoughts?

This takes a real rewiring. After all, who’s accustomed to having a WE per-spective? For 20-30 years of our life, it was all about ME.

The myth of the ‘pink cloud’cloud.

Pink is not a primary color. It ap-pears on only one national flag in all the world. (The Turks and Caicos Islands flag includes a pink shell.) Things asso-ciated with pink include: piggy banks, pink eye, pink elephants, cotton candy,

Have you heard of the “pink cloud”? It’s a term that originated in Alcohol-ics Anonymous. Everyone recovering from addiction rides the pink cloud at some point. Many don’t understand it. So now is the perfect time to learn the truth about this thing called the pink

pink-o commu-nists, Pink Floyd, Barbie’s™ pink camper, pink roses and soothing pink stomach relief. Consequently, pink has a hard time inspiring confidence. So when you hear mention of the pink cloud, you might not assign much importance to it. That would be a huge mistake.

Of course we aren’t talking about an actual pink cloud; that intensely beautiful mass of water vapor you see hanging in the sky at dusk. Rather, in the context of recovery, the pink cloud refers to a state of mind.

Mention of the pink cloud is found on page 113 of the Alcoholics Anony-mous text Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, which describes the feeling you experience when you finally admit that you are powerless over alcohol or drugs and that your life has become unmanageable. A.A. calls this Step One, or surrender. If you don’t relate to 12-step programs like A.A. or N.A. that’s okay. Think of it as the way you feel after you finally hit “bottom.”

Covert operation of the‘secret handshake’ captured

The custom is as fleeting as it is elu-sive. In a matter of a split second, the entire exchange is over, and the people who witnessed the covert operation often never even knew it happened. A challenge coin, tucked in the palm of the United States president, is passed to a member of the military in a seem-ingly ordinary handshake. For photo-journalists who cover the president, immortalizing the exchange that takes place during that ‘secret handshake’ in a still image is something of a white whale. It’s exceedingly rare that clear photos of such a delivery are captured.

Yet, just two weeks ago, the feat was pulled off twice -- on consecutive days.

President Obama paid a three-day visit to California, and on his way out to the West Coast, he stopped in Arkansas to meet with families there whose lives were devastated by a recent outbreak of deadly tornadoes. Moments after the president touched down at Little Rock Air Force Base, veteran Associ-ated Press photographer Susan Walsh managed to snap a photo of President Obama making the hand off to Col. Pat-rick Rhatigan, commander of the 19th Airlift Wing.

Marine is 8th living recipient of Medal of HonorBy Richard Sisk, military.com

The White House announced Monday that Marine Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter will become the eighth living recipient to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor.

On Nov. 21, 2010, while on guard duty in the Marjah district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province, Car-penter dove on a Taliban grenade to save another Marine.

His wounds were so severe that he was listed as “P-E-A” (Person Expired on Arrival) when the medical evacuation helicopter got him to the aid station.

Carpenter survived even though he flat-lined in the course of one of the 30 surgeries he endured during recovery.

Carpenter survived and on Monday the White House announced that he would be awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama at a White House ceremony on June 19.

Carpenter, 24, of Flowood, Miss., will be the eighth living recipient of the nation’s highest award for valor from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He will also be the third Marine to receive the Medal of Honor since Sept. 11, 2001.

Marine Gen. Joseph “Fighting Joe” Dunford has been nominated as the next commandant of the Ma-rine Corps.

The Defense Department an-nounced today that Defense Secre-tary Chuck Hagel had nominated Dunford, who currently commands coalition troops in Afghanistan as head of the International Security Assistance Force, to be the 36th commandant.

Dunford, 58, previously served as the 32nd assistant commandant of the Marine Corps under Gen. Jim Amos from 2010 to 2012.

During his 37-year Marine Corps career as an infantry officer, Dun-ford has spent considerable time in both post-9/11 combat theaters.

Dunford’s nomination must still be confirmed by the Senate during a hearing process expected to take place later this year. If he is con-firmed, he will likely be installed as the next commandant this fall.

Pentagon program would enlist illegal immigrantsBy Chris Carroll, Stars and Stripes

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is reviewing a program that allows quali-fied noncitizens to enlist in the mili-tary, and officials say they’ll consider expanding it to cover some who now live in the United States illegally.

With legislative efforts stalled that would allow undocumented foreign nationals seeking citizenship to enlist in the military, the Pentagon and the White House are looking at alterna-tives, the Defense Department’s head of personnel said Monday at a Congres-

sional hearing in Chicago.“We look forward to the time when

we’ll be able to grant more individu-als the opportunity to serve this great nation,” said Jessica Wright, acting un-dersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

The Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program, or MAVNI, has been used by the services to enlist nearly 3,000 foreign nationals with vi-tal language and medical skills since 2009. The program currently excludes undocumented immigrants, but federal

law gives the Secretary of Defense wide leeway in accepting military members deemed “vital to the national interest.”

Wright said DOD believes in “mov-ing forward” on defining U.S. vital interests. Allowing undocumented foreign nationals raised in the United States to enlist would provide a larger pool of qualified applicants, as well as more diversity within DOD, she said.

Durbin for years has pushed im-migration reform that would, among other things, allow children brought to the United States illegally to gain citi-zenship through college education or military service.

Immigration reform legislation has passed the Senate but is stalled in the House of Representatives. Some House Republicans have bashed such efforts, saying they reward lawlessness.

“Our nation’s military is full of dedi-cated men and women and to disre-spect them by rewarding illegal aliens with citizenship is an insult,” Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said in a recent statement.

About 30,000 foreign nationals cur-rently serve in the active-duty U.S. mil-itary as well as the Guard and reserve components. For immigrants who hold legal residency, military service is a path to citizenship, with nearly 93,000 military members taking the U.S. citi-zenship oath since 2002.

MOTORCYCLES

The shy, reticent California kid re-sponsible for transforming the San Antonio Spurs, delivering a gassed dynasty its second wind, had come to the franchise with brazen strength, a stout spirit and a flawed shot. Hours af-ter the NBA draft three years ago, the Spurs hurried Kawhi Leonard through his “Welcome to the NBA” news confer-ence and out onto the practice court with shooting coach Chip Engelland.

As the clock lurched toward mid-night on July 1, Engelland worked to change Leonard’s release point, reshap-ing his shot and retraining his mind to trust what suddenly felt so awkward. Time was running out together, and soon the Spurs would leave a 20-year-old to administer his own reclamation. No coaches, no calls, no contact.

“He had come in, worked with Chip for three days and then – the lockout happened,” Spurs general

manager R.C. Buford told Ya-hoo Sports on Tuesday night. “There was intention in the [shooting] prescription giv-en him. It was not just drill work.”

Five months passed, the lockout ended and it didn’t take long for the Spurs to realize Leonard had dutifully done the work asked of him and returned a dif-ferent basketball player. In the Spurs’ wildest

dreams,

they imagined Leonard as a relent-less rebounder and a determined de-fender. Yet once Leonard developed a shot, he had a chance to be a star. Most of all, the Spurs had a chance to retool the Big Three, supplement

the supporting cast and make a run again.

Leonard had 29 points, two steals and two

blocked shots in a tell-tale 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Leonard did a magnificent job on LeBron James, hold-ing him to 22 points and playing a part in disrupting him into seven turnovers. No one could see this Spurs resurgence

How Kawhi Leonard revived the Spurs’ fading dynastycoming on Tuesday night, the way no one could see Leonard becoming this kind of a star, this kind of a franchise-changer in the winter of Tim Duncan’s and Manu Ginobili’s careers.

Leonard is the reason the Spurs are chasing championships again. He changed everything for the Spurs. He gave them size and strength and ath-leticism to partner with his calculat-ing, cunning basketball mind. Eventu-ally, he gave them a startling offensive game to go with his stifling defense. Against Oklahoma City and Miami, he gave them a defender for Kevin Durant and LeBron James. Yes, Kawhi Leonard gave the Spurs a chance again.

“You could’ve never predicted this,” Buford said.

No one ever saw him coming on draft night three years ago. Before that draft, Leonard had to slow down his workout schedule with an Achilles

and ankle injury, forcing him to skip a late June session with the Milwaukee Bucks. Between the poor shooting and those injury doubts, there was an un-easiness of teams on draft night. This gave the Spurs a chance.

Leonard had been sluggish in Games 1 and 2 of these Finals, and Popovich pushed him to come out fiercely on Tuesday night. He had done it a year ago against Miami. They needed it again now. Within minutes, Leonard had made Game 3 his own. Within the night, the Spurs had a 2-1 series lead and regained home-court advantage. As it turns out, Leonard is the perfect Spur: relentlessly dedicated to his craft, and painfully private.

Three years later, Leonard had been the best player on the floor in Game 3 of these NBA Finals, had made LeB-ron James uncomfortable. Perhaps only the imagination and ingenuity of these San Antonio Spurs could’ve ever considered the possibilities of Kawhi Leonard. Out of nowhere, out of a free-fall, the kid changed everything. From Duncan to Parker, Ginobili to Popovich, this kid could make them champions again. Almost there, again. Almost.

“He doesn’t talk much,” the Spurs’ Tiago Splitter

said. “But he plays great.”

Sterling-Silver:The Clippers sagaBy Richard Matz, Publisher

Donald Sterling has decided to sue the NBA after all. But I have a much better idea for Donald. With his $2 bil-lion dollars, Donald should start his own basketball league. Just think, the mighty NBA challenged by the DBA... not “Doing Business As,” its “Donald’s Bad A--es.”

I’d love to be Donald’s very first pick in his new DBA draft. If he’ll pay me anywhere from say $250,000 to $5 mil-lion per year, he can call me every neg-ative, racist, filthy name he can think of. I’ve talked with a bunch of my bud-dies, publishers and writers and we all agree… money talks and BS walks.

There will need to be a few bases Donald will have to cover to keep him out of hot water in his new league.

First, Donald will need to be careful when naming the teams in his league.

He’ll have to elim-inate all colors

— red, white, yellow, black, brown, etc. He can’t use the names of mammals… like bears, tigers, badgers, and mon-gooses, just in case the mammals take offense and file suit. Then you’re right back where you started from.

Second, if any of the team members are married and want to fool around on the side, they must first get approval from their spouses (there we’ve covered that base). And if our girlfriends want to bring any other types of mammals to the game, they need not ask our per-mission nor will we be able to chastise them. Aha! Now we get that one cov-ered.

So let’s see, the only thing left is to make sure that none of our private con-versations are used against us. We must only whisper in the ears of elderly, hard of hearing, and foreigners who don’t un-derstand the English language.

HOUSING

A SHORT HISTORY OF LAUGHLIN, NEVADA

By Howard Hianwww.travels-with-hian.com

The Southern California “drive mar-ket” is the number one tourist magnet for Las Vegas.

Planning a road-trip there? For a surprising treat, Turn East at Barstow and head to Laughlin instead. It’s on the Colorado River only 90 miles south of Las Vegas. Don Laughlin’s dream be-gan in 1964 as an alternate gambling destination.

Over the years nine casinos have been built but it still retains its laid-back, casual atmosphere. It has grown up, though, in terms of activities, events, water sports and, especially, food. Interestingly, Laughlin is one of the top five RV destinations in the U.S.

Sleep well

The Tropi-cana Express Hotel & Casi-no is located in the middle of town. It of-fers spacious, recently renovated, quiet rooms with flat screen TVs and free Wi-Fi in public areas. There are seven res-taurants, a pool and, of course, a casino. Logon to www.tropicanax.com for reservations and pro-motions.

Turn east at Barstow

Good eats & drinksThe old saying is “Breakfast is

the most important meal of the day.” If true, here are two doozies

for creative menus and huge portions; the Colorado Belle’s Loading Dock and Bumbleberry Flats in the Pioneer Ho-tel & Gambling Hall (purchase a jar of their bumbleberry jam). Trust me, you will want to skip lunch.

Cocktail time overlooking the Colo-rado River at the Aquarius Casino Re-sort’s Cove Bar Lounge is a treat; so-phisticated ambience, excellent drinks and creative small plates. For fun times, a super Happy Hour and raucous live music, head to the Tropicana’s Caboose Lounge (no cover, no minimum).

Both the Riverside Resort’s Gour-met Room and The Steakhouse at the Tropicana are outstanding; fine dining at its best. The Steakhouse has been voted the “Best Steakhouse” in Laugh-lin 12 years in a row.

Travel notes/out & aboutFor a relaxing mini-getaway, drive to

Laughlin Ranch, www.laughlinranch.com, for a round of golf, a massage in their beautiful spa and lunch in the Grill.

The USS Riverside’s boat tour fea-tures an interesting narration of the history of the Colorado River and the region, plus an up-close view of the pic-turesque Davis Dam.

Plan a visit around the schedule of big-time entertainers at the new, multi-million dollar Laughlin Event Center. For information go to www.laugh-lineventcenter.com.

Take a scenic hike: head to the Pe-destrian Bridge to the North Reach Trail, Bridge Trailhead and/or the Riv-erwalk Exploration Trail. They will lead to fishing spots, a day-use park and an up-close look at Davis Dam. In town, stroll along Riverwalk, which meanders behind most of the casinos along the Colorado River.

The Outlet Center, www.laughlin-outletcenter.com, has over 50 stores and a nine screen cinema.

The go to place for all Laughlin in-formation is www.visitlaughlin.com.

Safe travels and enjoy the journey...Thanks to the various websites for in-

formation, photos, etc.

This week’s solutions:

SUDOKUThe rules to play Sudoku are quite simple. Fill in the blanks

so that each row, each column, and each of the nine 3x3 grids contain one instance of each of the numbers 1 through 9.

Just for

LaughsDeaf genie

Two men were out fishing when one decides to have a smoke. He asks the other guy if he has a lighter. He re-plies “Yes I do!” and hands the other a 10 inch long BIC lighter. Surprised the guy asks, “Where did you get this?” The guy replies, “Oh I have a personal genie.” The first man asks, “Can I make a wish?” Sure says the other man, “Just make sure that you speak clearly cause he is a little hard at hearing.” “Ok I will” says the other as he rubs the lamp a genie appears and asks the man what he wants The man says, “I want a million ducks.” The ge-nie says OK and goes back to his bottle and 10 seconds later a million ducks fly over head . And the guy says to the other “ Your genie realy sucks at hear-ing doesnt he?” The other man replies, “I know, do you really think I asked for a 10 inch BIC?”

All’s fair in love and warThis old guy goes into a church in a

small town in the hills of Italy and asks the priest to hear his confession. The priest listens and then asks, “Is there anything else?” The old guy says, ‘’Dur-ing the war, when I was young, a beau-

tiful German girl came to my farm after escaping and asked me if I would hide her. I told her I would if she provided me with sexual favors.” The priest replies, “Don’t worry about it. It was wartime and you both were under a lot of pressure.” The old guy says, “Does that mean that I have to tell her that the

war is over?”

Today’s menu itemThe cowboy was sipping his tequila

in the cantina when the waiter served the table next to him a delicious smell-ing plate. He later asked the waiter what the dish was. The waiter ex-plained, “It is called Cojones de Toro, the testicles of a bull.” The cowboy promptly replied that it smelled and looked delicious. The waiter replied that there was only one serving per day from that morning’s bull fight. He went on to explain that the cowboy could come in tomorrow morning and place his order for the delicacy to be served that evening. The next morning the cowboy went to the cantina and placed his order. That evening when he was served, he inspected the entrée and called the waiter back and asked why the items on the plate were so much

smaller than the night before, to which the waiter replied, “Senor, sometimes the bull wins.”

Photo trapA motorist gets caught in an auto-

mated speed trap that photographs his car. He later receives a ticket in the mail for $40 with a photo of his car. In-stead of payment, he sends the police department a photograph of $40. A few days later, he gets a letter from the po-lice department with a picture of hand-cuffs.

Name gameA woman has twins, and gives them

up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Amal.” The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her hus-band responds, “But they are twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal.”

DrowningThree boys walk through the woods

and suddenly hear cries for help. They follow the sound to the lake and see President Obama drowning. The boys jump into the water and drag him to shore.

Obama asks the boys how he can re-pay them. The first boy says, “I want a boat.”

The second boy says, “I want a

truck.”The third boy says, “I want a nice

tombstone.”Obama asks, “Why is that?”The boy says, “Because when my

dad finds out I helped save you, he’s go-ing to kill me.”

HEALTH

Owning the fact you are powerless over your behaviors marks the begin-ning of recovery. When your ego stops calling the shots, horror gives way to hope. An enormous feeling of relief follows surrender. The bag of bricks you’ve shouldered for so long is lifted, awakening intense emotions long anes-thetized with chemicals. You enter the miracle phase of recovery. You’re float-ing on a cloud; an intensely beautiful pink cloud.

However, there is a tendency at this point to feel so victorious that you stop doing the work, Instead you want to celebrate your newfound freedom by shouting out to anyone who will listen. A.A. describes this person as one who completes Step-One (surrender) and immediately skips to Step-Twelve (shar-ing the message with others) without doing any of the work in-between. You can also think of it as being naive, lazy or overconfident. You might be sober, but you haven’t identified your triggers or cravings nor learned healthy coping skills. You haven’t set things right with the people you wronged. You haven’t developed a new way of living. This is tough stuff that takes time.

Eventually life tap-dances on your head. You’re jolted back to reality by issues — both good and bad — which you haven’t the skills to handle. So you lose faith in the recovery process, sink into depression, and relapse.

Or not. With all due respect to A.A., that is a myth! The truth is, you can ride your pink cloud for the rest of your life. My miracle began October 21, 2008. Life sober has been intensely beauti-ful ever since. Of course there are chal-lenges. But recovery teaches that you can overcome anything so long as you keep things in perspective, stop trying to control everything and focus on just those things you can change by using the tools (i.e. Steps) you develop. Let me assure you, the worst day sober is infinitely better than the best day high.

Simply work a recovery program — rigorously, honestly, humbly — and you will find yourself riding atop your very own pink cloud. Then, whether or not you ever give up this intensely beau-tiful state of mind will be your choice alone. But I warn you, pink clouds, like

recovery and cotton candy, are addict-ing!

Keith Angelin, MBA, CADC-II, CNDAI, is a Master’s level, board-certified alcohol & drug counselor, and nationally certified intervention specialist. He can relate to the worst in addicts because he was con-sidered hopeless myself. His 14-year battle with drugs and alcohol included multiple overdoses. His recovery compelled him to re-evaluate his life and share the miracle with others. Recently he authored the “At Home Recovery Workbook.” Learn more at www.InterventionRx.com.

mit an e98 request form to Labor offi-cials before they set wage and benefit rates for fast food workers in federal contracts. Meanwhile, Labor officials expect to finish their reevaluation soon.

In March, McDonald’s restaurants closed on three Navy bases, and Ma-rine Corps officials have said one will close on a Marine base. Another eatery, “I Love Country,” has closed at Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The majority of fast food conces-sions on Army and Air Force bases are unaffected because they are operated

WAGE RULESCont’d. from Page 6

directly by the Army and Air Force Ex-change Service, not by contract.

Russell Beland, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for military man-power and personnel, had sent a letter to DoL April 8 asking for an exemption from the wage regulations.

In that letter, Beland said Navy and Marine Corps exchange officials esti-mate that unless relief is granted, up to 390 fast food concession operations would close on installations across the U.S. and its territories, with a loss of nearly 5,750 jobs, many held by mili-tary family members and veterans.

Concessionaires can’t increase their prices on bases to offset increased

labor costs, because under most con-tracts they can’t charge more than is charged by similar services within a specified radius of a military installa-tion, according to an April 10 letter to DoL signed by Reps. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee’s personnel panel, John Kline, R-Minn., chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Commit-tee, and 38 other lawmakers.

The lawmakers asked DoL to exempt some military morale, welfare and rec-reation and exchange operations, such as fast food concessions, from the wage regulations affecting federal contrac-tors on military bases.

“Should these policy changes be ful-ly implemented, we are concerned they will eliminate jobs, negatively impact recreational services on military bases, and limit the dining options for service men and women on military installa-tions,” the lawmakers wrote.

Navy and Marine Corps exchange officials estimate a combined loss of about $27 million a year in profits as-sociated with food service sales alone.

The companies aren’t paid by the federal government; they rely on the revenue they receive from their cus-tomers, and provide revenue payments to the exchange systems that help sup-port MWR programs.

Last year, Congressman Jeff Dun-can (R-SC) and U.S. Tim Scott (R-SC) spoke to a large crowd at a Tea party meeting in Greenville, S.C.

TheGreenvillePost.com’s Joshua Cook asked both Sen. Scott and Congressman Duncan why the U.S. continues to give 50 billion taxpay-er dollars in foreign aid to counties who hate us.

Sen. Scott said, “Until we get to that point, myself, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and others take a strong stand on questioning what do we get on the return on investment for the money that we are giving out in this world.”

Duncan agreed with Sen. Scott and elaborated further.

“We must stop giving money to countries that hate us, they can hate us for free. We got to quit funding Islamic extremist and radicals…if I had my way, we would not fund the Muslim brotherhood at all” Duncan said.

The news arrives as lawmakers in Washington battle over the conditions for increasing the nation’s ability to borrow money before defaulting on its obligations.
