Letter from the President

NALTA News 6 June 2007

When I contacted ourMembership Chair, SarahAdamson, on May 1st tofind out what our member-ship count was, I wasspeechless when I heardthis number. If you recall,we were all quite im-pressed with our 2006

year-end total of 1,228 and here we are almost a hundred overthat number. With half of the year to go, it will be exciting to seewhat our total will be at the end of 2007!

With our At-Large Chapter comprised of 130 members, several individuals have emerged from that number inquiringabout starting new chapters. I previously told you about interestin the Birmingham, Alabama, and Hartville, Ohio areas. We nowhave had a third inquiry from Horseheads, New York, so our listof new possibilities just keeps growing. Answering theirquestions and helping them along the path to form new chaptershas definitely been one of the most exciting parts of beingPresident this year.

My travels since my last letter to you have also been veryrewarding. On March 13th I took a one day trip to Dallas and wasgraciously welcomed to the DFW-ALTA luncheon that featuredDick Murdock from Hunt Oil Company presenting an interestingdiscussion on 3D seismic. It was great to return to downtownDallas again after so many years and enjoy the Dallas PetroleumClub and the company of the chapter members. Then on April24th I attended the SALTA Spring Seminar, where I gave apresentation on Land Administration. I joined three otherspeakers, Walter Parks, Shelly Aten, and Eric Sanford, whospoke on the Elements of a Lease -general interpretation, provisions, andtypes of leasing. I presented at the end ofthe day and on a subject that was, perhaps, a bit like preaching tothe choir, but I thoroughly enjoyed being part of SALTA's firstseminar since becoming a chapter in 2005. They put the entireevent together like they had been doing it for years and the venueat San Juan College was exceptionally nice.

Another treat at the seminar was having several of theTALTA members in attendance. They were in Farmington onConocoPhillips business and stayed an extra day to attendthe seminar. Having two Past Presidents of NALTA in this group,David Nelson and Michael Smith, just added more substance tothe entire day. Thank you, David and Michael, for helping meexplain the benefits of belonging to our local chapters and

And the Winner is...Number 1,315!

2007 NALTA President

NALTA. Hopefully we were able to recruit some new SALTAmembers.

At this time of year we are already looking ahead to nextyear's slate of officers. The deadline for nominations for the 2008NALTA Board is June 29th and with our membership at suchgreat numbers I just know there are many individuals with newideas and contributions just waiting to be made at the nationallevel. If you are considering this as a possibility now or in thenear future, please contact any of our board members or thisyear's Nomination Committee Chair, Pam Reece, forinformation. In this issue there is also an article explaining thebasic responsibilities of each of the offices. Once you becomeinvolved with NALTA, I assure you that you will realize evenmore the importance of our national and local organizations thatpromote the role of the lease and title analyst.

Last but certainly not least, our 2007 NALTA Conference iscoming up very quickly and by the time you read this you shouldhave received your conference brochure. Please let a boardmember know if you haven't received yours. This will be a verywell-attended event, so make sure you register as soon aspossible! I look forward to seeing all of you in Colorado thisSeptember for another great educational event!

It's almost that time again. Summer NAPE will behere before you know it. Exhibitors are making plansnow to attend on August 23rd and 24th at the GeorgeR. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. If youhave been involved in the oil and gas industry for anylength of time, you know prospects and properties arechanging hands at an ever-increasing rate. Whatbetter marketplace to showcase these properties thanNAPE? What better place to showcase NALTA thanNAPE? With more companies entering the arena, experienced analysts are in demand now more thanever before. It does not matter how many propertiesyou can bring through the door, if you can't safeguard

those investments, the acquisitions are pointless. Asanalysts, we are uniquely positioned and qualified tomake a difference in our industry. With that in mind,NAPE allows us the perfect opportunity to introduceourselves and communicate to other attendeesNALTA's goals and purpose. If you enjoy sharingNALTA with others and want to see what theexcitement is all about, plan to be there with me.We're looking for volunteers.

GeoMet (NASDAQ: GMET) was founded as aconsulting company to the coalbed methane (CBM)industry in 1985 by three geologists withbackgrounds in the coal mining and related coaldegasification industry.

We have been active as an operator and developerof coalbed methane properties for our own accountsince 1993. Having been involved in the industrysince its birth is one of the unique qualities that setsGeoMet apart from so many other companies thatdevelop coalbed methane.

Our principal operations and producing propertiesare located in the Cahaba Basin in Alabama and theCentral Appalachian Basin in West Virginia andVirginia. At December 31, 2006, we controlled a totalof approximately 280,000 net acres of coalbedmethane and oil and natural gas development rights, primarily in Alabama, West Virginia, Virginia,Louisiana, Colorado, and British Columbia. Webelieve our extensive undeveloped acreage position(77,000 net acres) at our development projects at theGurnee Field in the Cahaba Basin in Alabama and inthe Pond Creek Field in Appalachian Basin provide uswith more than 600 potential development drillinglocations.

GeoMet focuses primarily on coalbed methanebecause we believe that the inherent geologic andproduction characteristics of CBM offer significantoperational advantages compared to conventional gasproduction. Unlike conventional natural gas sourcesthat have higher degrees of geologic risk, coaldeposits are wide spread, easily identified andshallow. Therefore, the drilling success rate for CBMcompanies can easily approach 95 to 100%, wellabove conventional exploration targets. By drillingcore holes, conducting gas desorption tests and the

drilling of a limited number of production test wellsthroughout our property base, we can define theresources in place prior to spending significantcapital.

As a result, CBM has low geological risk and wellsare relatively quick to complete making them veryattractive targets. Another attractive quality ofcoalbed methane is that CBM wells typically haveinclining production rates early in their lives and lowdecline rates thereafter. This typically results in areserve life that is significantly higher than manytypes of conventional gas production.

By pursuing those projects that leverage our CBMexpertise we have a strong track record of success inidentifying and exploiting large underdevelopedresource plays with low finding and developmentcosts and low project life operating costs.

As of December 31, 2006, GeoMet hadapproximately 326 Bcf of estimated proved reserves,an increase of 24% over year-end 2005. Ourestimated proved reserves at year-end 2006 were100% coalbed methane and 74% proved developed.GeoMet also increased its average net daily salesvolume in 2006 by 36% to approximately 17.1 MMcfper day from the prior year.

GeoMet knows firsthand that people are thedifference in the success of a CBM project. Eachindividual on our highly experienced team of CBMprofessionals has on average more than 17 years ofCBM experience. This multi-disciplinary team hasdeveloped five successful large scale coalbedmethane projects in four separate basins in the UnitedStates and has participated in the drilling of more than2,700 CBM wells worldwide. No other CBM operatorcan match our record.

Last summer I mentioned thebad old CPLTA tradition ofstashing recertification documen-tation till the very last moment, and how frustrating that is for the

local Certification Committee Liaisons helping trackyour recertification progress. Just like a desk-drawerdeed is ineffective for lack of delivery, so too is a desk-drawer attendance affidavit.

CPLTA's, of all people, should appreciate theimportance of timely recording. If you've read theprogram regs lately, you know there is a promptsubmission clause, requiring Attendance Affidavits besubmitted within 90 days. NALTA has never reallyenforced the file it or lose it rule, but with the currentrapid membership growth and the CPLTA boom that isbound to follow, your Liaison just won't have time tocontinuing granting individual indulgences.

So really, what the Liaisons need you to do is just putyourself in their shoes, and empathize with them as busyprofessionals. On top of their drilling-boom workload, they help us all maintain the legitimacy of the CPLTAProgram and track recertification records, So, how doyou work with them to keep track of your recertificationprogress?

• File early and file often. Nobody wants to holdyour feet to a hot calendar, but please respect theintent of prompt filing, and start accumulatingpoints early. Promptly submitted, small bundlesof attendance affidavits make their job, and yourrecertification, go smoother.

• By the same token, remember that it only takes50 points every five years to recertify (of which35 have to be core (Oil, Gas, Mineral, andEnergy Industry) subjects). There's no reason towear them out by continuing to turn in pointsway, way past the 50-point threshold. Once youhave the points down cold, please respect theLiaison's personal time, and their need to workwith others who are stretching to catch up under

the wire. It's not a contest, and points don't rollforward.

• Provide full and appropriate backup for coursesbeing submitted for recertification points.(Advance filing is strongly encouraged, especially if you are organizing a group trainingeffort). If you are requesting a single point for aone-hour event by another Land ProfessionalOrganization, just a copy of their attendanceaffidavit is required. But, if you are requestingmultiple points, full documentation is necessary. At the least, that means a timed, detailed agenda. If the agenda is short on description and detail, you should copy and submit course materials in afashion that is presentable and easily reviewed.

• Finally, remember you are your own backup. "Iknow I sent it," may be true, but a verbalsummary does not meet the documentationthreshold. Please retain copies of all submittalstill you know they are properly posted. Then savethe summary!

If you have attended any oil and gas industry eventslately, you have probably notice that the "Graying ofAmerica" is alive and well within our industry. We areconsidered the "survivors" and as such have weathered theoil shocks of the 1970s and 1980s and subsequent collapsein world energy prices from 1984 to 1986, resulting in amajor retrenchment of the energy industry. This, coupledwith the fact that the domestic industry alone lost morethan a half million jobs in the mid-1980s, has left us thelucky recipients of very demanding jobs, often "two for theprice of one."

Not only have we witnessed the industry during itsboom and inherited the outcome of the bust, but also wehave been smack in the middle of a technologicalexplosion. We have gone from typewriters, stand aloneword processors and dumb terminals to desktop personalcomputers with productivity-based software programs forword processing, spreadsheets, databases, and the like, often times with little or no training. Further, we have beenblessed (or not, depending on your point of view) withclient-server or web-based software programs for our landand contract records management - often times leading tosystems' conversions. Finally, with all of the acquisitions, divestitures and mergers over the last decade, we havebecome "super analysts" - literally and figuratively. Wow,you could say we have "come a long way baby!"

This picture is probably pretty accurate for most of theBaby Boomers in oil and gas today. According to industrystatistics, the average age of employees in the businesstoday is between 47 to 50 years old. With the averageretirement age being 55 years old, the oil and gas industryis facing another major crisis in the next five to eight years.Unfortunately, due to the tumultuous nature of the energyindustry, fewer and fewer young people are entering thefield. In addition, we have lost many of the 55+ workers toearly retirements and the like, thereby losing our mentors. In bygone days, the older generation of the industry wouldpass the torch to the younger generation by mentoringthem. Although we have lost many of the 55+ workers, thenext generation of energy workers still needs to bementored. Consequently, Baby Boomers are tasked withnot only being "super analysts," but also with becomingmentors to the younger generation as they enter theindustry.

As Baby Boomers who have survived the boom of the1970s and the bust associated with the energy pricecollapse of the 1980s, we are now being asked to leave our

NALTA News 21 June 2007

legacy to an industry that has given us much. This we mustdo even though our plates are overflowing. We have twooptions - we can drop the ball and do nothing, which is notreally an option, or we can choose to carry the torchforward to the next generation of workers in the oil patch. One way of doing this is by becoming a mentor.

Accordingly, part one of this two-part article willaddress the varied support a mentor can provide a protégéby defining mentoring, discussing trends in mentoring, identifying different learning styles, addressing whatmentors provide and assessing possible areas of expertise. In addition, we will look at winning qualities of both amentor and a protégé.

The second part of this article will appear in the nextissue of the NALTA News Magazine. It will cover theprinciples of mutual agreement, composing a mutualagreement, protégés keeping a journal, principles for greatmentoring, mentors leading by example, developing astrong rapport, knowing when it is time to part ways, developing an action plan and the benefits of a corporatementoring program.

Varied Support a Mentor Can Provide a ProtégéBefore understanding the varied support a mentor can

provide a protégé, you must first understand the differencebetween a mentor and a protégé and what it takes to be amentor. To that end, Webster defines a mentor as "a wiseand trusted counselor or teacher," and a Protégé as "aperson whose well-being, training, or career is promotedby an influential person."

One way to determine whether or not you have someof the characteristics necessary to be an effective mentoris to take a preliminary Self-Check by answering yes or noto the following questions:

(1) I can correctly define a mentor and a protégé.

(2) I believe a strong mentoring partnership is one ofthe most important relationships in a person's life.

(3) I can give examples of the varied support thatmentors provide their protégés.

(4) I can explain the key principles of mentoring.

(5) I have been mentored in a professional setting by

a wiser, more experienced colleague in my field.

(6) I have mentored another person in a professionalsetting.

(7) If applicable, in my mentoring relationships, mypartner and I have drafted and agreed on a mutualagreement.

(8) If applicable, in my mentoring relationships, theprotégé has always kept a journal documenting whathe/she is learning.

If you find that you can answer yes to most of thesequestions, you would probably make a good mentor.Likewise, if you have not answered yes to many of thesequestions, you can still learn to be an effective mentor.Once you determine if you would make a good mentor, itis helpful to understand some of the trends in mentoringtoday.

Trends in Mentoring Mentoring in the workplace has seen a sharp increase

in the past 15 years. In addition, the mentoring process isslowly changing to adjust to the Information Age.Therefore, mentoring allows for more flexibility indetermining partnerships and establishing long-distancepartnerships, as well as for greater learning potential. Inaddition to these trends, it is beneficial to understand thedifferent learning styles you can use as a mentor.

Different Learning Styles Mentoring can be learned through observing and

mimicking, by group instruction or by one-on-oneinstruction and progress. Regardless of which type ofmentoring learning style you use, it is helpful tounderstand the difference between visual, auditory andkinesthetic types of learning and communicating.Individuals with a high visual preference process newideas and concepts by "seeing" them. Conversely, individuals with a high auditory preference process newideas and concepts by "hearing" them. Individuals with akinesthetic learning and/or communication style prefer toprocess new ideas and concepts by "doing" them. Onceyou determine the mentoring and learning style(s) you willuse, it is helpful to understand what mentors can provide.

What Do Mentors Provide? Mentors provide career growth, professional

instruction and emotional encouragement and guidance.

Continued from page 21

Some of the ways in which a mentor can provide careergrowth are by endorsing the protégé for promotions andraises, assistance in career strategizing and motivationalcoaching. Often, a mentor can provide professionalinstruction which may include providing the protégé withtechnical training, demanding projects, support forworking out problems alone, and clarifying companyprinciples and rules. Finally, a mentor can provideemotional encouragement and guidance such ascamaraderie, appreciation and praise, confidentialadvisement, showing the way by example, safeguardingagainst difficulty, easing of pressure and anxiety, andintroduction to others who can help. Following are manyof the possible areas of expertise a mentor may have tomake them effective.

Possible Areas of ExpertiseSome of the areas of expertise exhibited by mentors

are: solving problems, taking risks, listening to others, communicating needs assertively, managing time andprojects, and writing concisely and effectively. In additionthey exhibit excellent customer service and computerskills and great leadership skills. Further, they are typicallygood at providing feedback to others, setting priorities, andworking in an organized and efficient manner. Also, theytypically have good telephone skills and are good atcreating new ideas, supporting team members, andreceiving criticism. In addition to these possible areas ofexpertise, the following sections will address the winningqualities of both mentors and protégés.

Winning Qualities in Mentor/ProtégéMentors are usually well informed and bright. In

addition, they are inspiring and leaders, and willing to takerisks. Also, they are self-assured, dedicated anddependable and responsible and trustworthy.

Protégés are responsible and honorable with awillingness to acknowledge authority. Further, they areambitious, have wisdom and intelligence and they arecapable and gifted as well. Finally, they are eager to beleaders.

Ultimately, the protégé must be willing to learn and bementored. Some of the things a protégé must decideregarding what they want in a mentor are as follows:

(1) Are you more courteous toward people when theyexpress their views or do you question their reasoning?

(2) Do you think teachers help students learn or justtransfer what they know to their students?

Page 25: Mile High on EducationConocoPhillips Home: 432-218-7656 Devon Energy Prod. Co., LP Home: 405-721-3309 PO Box 51810 Fax: 432-688-6090 20 N. Broadway Avenue Fax: 405-552-8113 Midland,

(3) Are you narrow-minded or broad-minded?

(4) Do you tend to be impulsive about trying newthings or guarded because you're concerned about theconsequences?

(5) Should teachers and mentors offer answers to helpcome up with alternatives?

(6) Is giving advice or listening more helpful to you?

(7) Do you tend to believe in other people or doubtthem?

(8) Which do you find more irritating - organizationor disarray?

(9) Do you learn best by focusing on problems orgeneral topics?

(10) Do you prefer to be conventional or different fromothers?

This concludes Part One of this two-part articlewherein the following topics have been addressed: thevaried support a mentor can provide a protégé by definingmentoring, trends in mentoring, identifying differentlearning styles, addressing what mentors provide andassessing possible areas of expertise, and looking atwinning qualities of both a mentor and a protégé.

As previously mentioned, Part Two and the conclusionof this article will appear in the next issue of the NALTANews. It will cover the principles of mutual agreement, composing a mutual agreement, protégés keeping ajournal, principles for great mentoring, mentors leading byexample, developing a strong rapport, knowing when it istime to part ways, developing an action plan and thebenefits of a corporate mentoring program.

A New Chapter on the Horizon?NALTA currently has seven (7) local chapters plus the

at-large membership. The at-large consists ofapproximately 130 members. At-Large members are thosewho do not have access to a local chapter or have chosento participate in NALTA on the national level only.

In recent months NALTA has received several inquiriesregarding the creation of new chapters. These inquiries areexciting because they demonstrate continued interest in theoil and gas business along with the determination andmotivation of our members to create educationalopportunities for themselves and their coworkers. As weall have come to realize in this business, there is alwaysmore to learn.

In creating a new business, organization, or chapter, adocumented plan provides an outline for success. Thereare five (5) essential steps when considering the start of anew chapter:

1) Preparing For Organizational Meeting2) Organizational Meeting Day3) Preparation of By-Laws4) Charter Meeting5) NALTA Requirements For Approving Affiliation

Preparation for Organizational MeetingWhen considering a new chapter, first contact NALTA.

The NALTA board is eager to provide assistance. In yourpreparation draw attention to what you are planning toachieve. It is imperative that all companies and individualsin your area connected with our industry be made aware ofthe meeting. Contact all land personnel, oil and gascompanies, brokers and law firms and invite them. Employthe help of the local media (newspaper, other organizationletters) regarding an announcement to the public. Preparea questionnaire for input from the attendees. Secure a copyof Robert's Rules of Order. This will help establishprocedures.

Organizational Meeting DayWith all probability, several current NALTA board

members will attend the meeting. Refreshments providefor a great mixer. Take advantage of the photo oppor-tunities. They will be beneficial in future newsletters andadvertisements. During this meeting, select interimofficers. Before close of this meeting be sure to set the dateof the first meeting of the newly created chapter.

Preparation of By-LawsEmploy the help of an attorney to help file your charter

with the state in which your chapter will be located. Using

the services of your company attorney who will not expecta fee is a great idea. Contact other chapters for copies ofby-laws for a beginning point. Since no two chapters areidentical, make use of the acquired by-laws as a startingpoint and create by-laws that fit your chapter. You mayfind that just a little tweaking is needed to suit yourchapter's specific needs. The interim president shouldmonitor progress of preparation of by-laws.

Charter MeetingIn preparation for your charter meeting send out

announcements about two (2) weeks prior. Be sure to havemembership applications for the local chapter and NALTAon hand. The interim treasurer will collect dues andprovide receipts. Present the by-laws and vote on theiradmission. Also, present the ballot of officers and vote.

Items Required By NALTA for Approving AffiliationThe following items are required by NALTA for

approving local chapters:

1) Certificate of Incorporation2) Articles of Incorporation3) By-Laws4) Certificate of Corporate Resolution (a motion

voted on by members indicating their desire to be affiliatedwith NALTA - copy of minutes acceptable)

5) Application of Employer Identification Number(Form SS-4)

6) Resolution certifying that at least 50% ofmembership are members of NALTA

7) Established Chapter Date8) Name of Chapter

Once the official business is completed, there are otherareas that will need attention. A new chapter will need amailing address, bank account, chapter logo, etc. Decideon how often you will meet, the day and time along withthe fee. Be aware of other organizations' meeting times soas not to coincide. Members of other organizations mayalso want to attend your luncheons. Also, consider subjectsand speakers for your meetings. Your goal is to attract asmany people as possible. A great speaker and subject areessential to making this happen.

Remember: If you are considering starting a newchapter contact someone on the NALTA board. NALTAhas a step-by-step plan to assist you.

Spring is finallyhere in the RockyMountains! After avery snowy winterand early spring, wein Denver are veryhappy to see the warmsunshine again.

The DALTA boardvoted to give 1 fullscholarship and 4two-night hotel roomaccommodations tothe NALTA confer-ence this year. Wethought that since the

conference is in Broomfield (north of Denver)that some companies may not pay for a hotelroom since they consider it a local event, however, we are encouraging Denvermembers going to conference to ask theircompanies to pay for hotel too so they don'thave to miss out on the evening events to drivehome. We will have the DALTA scholarshipsand the NALTA scholarship drawings at ourJune luncheon.

expounded on the initial phases of putting a playtogether which involved two types of prospects - theDrilling Prospect and the Production Prospect. TheDrilling Deal is starting from scratch. He explained theinitial phases of putting a play together and the phasesof involvement that comes from the exploration team, landman and/or broker prior to the analyst receiving anyacquisitions, documents or lease files. The ProductionProspect involved already producing properties andhow an oil company determines the value of thoseproperties and how much to invest. With the industrycontinuing to grow; and with so many of our veteransretiring, this subject was of great interest to all. A specialinterest group, the newbie's coming on board, seem toget a lot of information and gave feedback during ourQ&A. Also, the topic was somewhat a refresher coursefor those that have been in the industry for a number ofyears who have worked in one specific area of expertisethe entire time. The expanded knowledge wasappreciated by all that attended.

MARCH, 2007 MEETINGMarch 13, 2007, our 1ST VP of Dallas, Rita Harden,

has also graciously worked hard on luncheon meetingsto find topics of interest for the entire group. The Marchmeeting was opened by President Jan Warren with newsthat DFW-ALTA's membership was already 233members. She reminded and encouraged us to attendboth the upcoming Spring

Seminar in Dallas and the NALTA Conference inBroomfield, Colorado from September 26th-29th. Thefirst Dallas meeting kick-off began with speaker, DickMurdock, Hunt Oil Company, Dallas, Texas givinggraphic detail on "What is 3D Seismic and How Does ItImprove Oil Exploration?" 3D Seismic is a method usedto provide a high spatially sampled measure ofsubsurface reflectivity. It images layer rock by usinggeophones to pick up echoes. Those echoes send backsignals from which subsurface points are analyzed. 3Dhas helped petroleum exploration and give a clearerpicture of where oil might be found and where it mightmigrate. He explained how the geophones give accuratedata in comparison to methods used years ago. The dataacquired can suggest directional drilling targets and/orthe drilling of new prospective wells. There are timesand instances where economically, the steep dip (slope)rates in the pinnacle, may cause production to not be

NALTA News 43 June 2007

dramatically beneficial from horizontal drilling anddirectional drilling would suffice the companies needsbetter. 3D Seismic data allow for more thoroughanalysis than 2D seismic data previously used. Dickalso introduced the group to 4D which is becomingmore widely used in the oil industry. The time-lapse, or4D Seismic method involves acquisition, processing, and interpretation of repeated seismic surveys over aproducing hydrocarbon field. The objective is todetermine the changes occurring in the reservoir as aresult of hydrocarbon production or injection of water orgas into the reservoir by comparing the repeateddatasets. His presentation was helpful in understandingthe many aspects of 3D Seismic and the future use of 4DSeismic.

Our Special guest was Judy Baratta, NALTApresident, as she toured her chapter visits. She spoke tothe group about NALTA and how the board's goals wereto meet the needs of all members. She reminded themembership about the 2007 Conference as well. Judypresented a door prize gift to Nikki Higgs, J. W.Operating, Addison, Texas, who held the lucky winningticket. A second gift was given to be presented to the Ft.Worth group since she will not be in attendance at theirnext meeting. Our Honorary Life Award recipient,Dorothy Lyle, was presented her award by president,Jan Warren, since she was not present at the December,2006 luncheon.

2007 DFW-ALTA SPRING SEMINAR, April 13We held our annual Spring Seminar at the Ellison

Miles Geotechnology Institute, Brookhaven College,Farmers Branch, Texas. We had three excellent speakersthat spoke on Federal Units along with one motivationalspeaker presented at the end of the day. The seminar'sobjective was to provide the lease and title analyst witha firm basis of understanding; 'Why federal units areformed and How to maintain leases throughout the lifeof the federal unit'. Our guest speakers were John W.Morrison, Attorney, Fleck, Mather & Strutz, Ltd.,Bismarck, North Dakota, who spoke on "Why FormFederal Units", Larry Claypool, Senior PetroleumEngineer, Bureau of Land Management, Wyoming StateOffice Reservoir Management Group, Casper,Wyoming was our second speaker whose topic was"Life Cycle of the Federal Unit". All three speakers were experts intheir field from both the private as well as regulatorysides of the industry. We closed our session with KayVinson, Motivational Speaker, Dallas, Texas. Kay,while keeping everyone on the edge of their seats spoketo us on "What you are is what you get - An Explorationof the meaning of Aggressive, Assertive and PassiveBehaviors". She helped each of us realize how you areperceived by others and how changes in your approachcan strengthen relationships both professionally andpersonally.

APRIL, 2007 MEETINGApril 24, 2007, our second Ft. Worth topic was

"What Comes Next - The Leasing Project". Our speakerwas Pam Dietrich with Holland Acquisitions. Pamwalked us through the initial contact with the landownerand the 30-day sight draft, after which the real workbegins. Pam began her search on the Property Taxwebsite and found the owners name and account. Shethen pointed out the information that was important toour search and what we would need to seek further titleinformation. We then visited the County Clerk's websiteand found the title documents involved with a specificlandowner. The example showed a break in the chain oftitle because of a name change. Pam showed us how toresearch this information and also gave several othertips as to "checking title". She then presented a run sheetthat her company prepares and the final formal reportthat is submitted to the oil and gas company to enablethem to approve the 30-day sight draft when it ispresented. Pam was an effective speaker and everyoneenjoyed her topic and took something back to the officefor further "research".

BOARD MEETINGSThe 2007 Board of Directors held meetings on

February 8, 2007 at Delta Café mid-town and April 12,2007 at Panera Bread in south Tulsa. Issues discussed, pending or voted upon are as follows:

• Upon review of the By-laws and determination thatno change in them would be required, the term ofoffice for the Board of Directors beginning in 2008will be January through December;

• An audit of TALTA's financial records for the lastthree years is being performed by a professionalCPA and should be complete by the end of April;

• The decision was made that the new TALTA logowill be done by a professional graphics/logocompany and will include a rendering of Tulsa'sGolden Driller. Upon completion, new stationarywill be ordered;

• Joanna Dixon, Director and Website Chair, receivedseveral quotes for the set up and maintenance of theTALTA website and prepared a spreadsheet of thecost and services/content provided for each quote.Motions will be made and vote taken upon furtherdiscussion by the board. The website will be up andrunning before the end of this year;

• Discussion was held regarding the need to purchasea projector and screen because rental rates at bothhotels and equipment rental services are incrediblyhigh. It was first suggested that we approach theSooner Association of Division Order Analysts(SADOA) about joint ownership inasmuch as wealready share a storage facility and our membershipmeetings are held on opposing months. Due toliability issues, this was tabled and the boardapproved the purchase of a projector and screen tobe owned solely by TALTA;

• Due to the pace of the industry and the additionalhours that a large portion of the membership and theboard have had to devote to their jobs, the decisionwas made that there will be no May, 2007 generalmembership meeting; however, the board and anyvolunteers will meet in May for the planning ofTALTA's annual educational seminar. The date of theseminar will be June 14th, 2007 and held at the

MEMBERSHIPDue to the membership database built last year, TALTA

was able to send out our 2007 renewal membership formspopulated with each member's data as well as their picture,if provided. The form was created with enough space forchanges or updates if necessary. The positive feedbackreceived (as well as requests for replacement pictures)proved this method very effective. The 2007 membershipdrive is complete and TALTA now has 143 members, 30 ofwhich are new. As of May 1st, there were 20 members whohad yet to renew; however, we feel that several of themwill renew with a reminder call. The 2006-2007membership directories went to print the first week of Mayand we expect to begin distribution by the middle of themonth.

confirmed location of OSU/Tulsa ExtensionCampus. The general membership meetings willresume on the normal schedule with the July, 2007meeting;

• TALTA's President, Bob McElhattan researched thepossibility of offering a college course at TulsaCommunity College using the new NALTACertification Manual as the text book. Unfortunately, since the college charges tuition, the certificationmanual cannot be used. The manual was written byvolunteers for the purpose of NALTA's certificationprogram and cannot be used as a text when a profitis made by the institution presenting the course. Bobhasn't given up on finding a "free" classroomthough. Perhaps we can report fruition of hiswonderful idea in the future.
