Give a guy’s guy a man cave to chill in and he will never want to leave. This is the concept that I worked with in order to design the ultimate shopping experience for a man. Similar to Bonobos’ ability to take a classic item of clothing and put their own surprising twist on it, I wanted to create a classic man cave characterized by unique detailing. These details modify the traditional vision of the man cave, andpersonalize it so thatit is more applicable to Bonobos’ brand while also paying tribute to how the company attentively details their clothing. Starting with the storefront, this concept is evident. The front is backed by a wood panelled wall, and mannequins are displayed sitting in traditional furniture... suspended at various heights from the ceiling. Using a variety of bright and bold colors in a traditionally darker space brings attention to and highlights important elements while also creating an interested and engaging environment. Also, this updated look will excite consumers and encourage them to enter the space and exvplore the vstore.

Bonobos is a clothing store that caters to men between the years of 20 and 40. The brand offers a variety of clothing; however, theyarebestknownfortheirboldpantswithacustomizedfit.TheBonobosbrandappealstomenofthisagegroupbydetailing their pants with unexpected pops of colors. They take an element of fashion and turn in into a fun statement piece that allows each man to express his individual tastes while paying homage to the traditionally acceptable elements of menswear. This blend of casual and professional, bold and respectful, fun and serious appeals to the traditional guy’s guy. A guy’s guy is able to balance the blend of all these different personas and is the ideal man that most men strive to emulate, an ideal customer of Bonobos.

Concept

Page 9: Mike Nied Design Portfolio

Walking along the busy street of the meatpacking district our hero is on the prowl, hunting for a new fashionable wardrobe.

As he scans the storefronts, one in particular attracts his attention... Bonobos.

The storefront is attracting a lot of attention. Hanging at staggered heights from the ceiling are a variety of classically shaped lounge chairs with mannequins garbed in colorful clothing, and our hero is enthralled by the display and decides he needs to enter the store.

Page 10: Mike Nied Design Portfolio

Striding underneath one of the lounge chairs, our hero enters into what he can only describe as a sexy space. Spanning the wall to his right is the most impressive collection of clothing he has ever seen and to his left is a large

screen broadcasting the store’s website. Men are wandering through the space heading towards…a bar?

Coded Floor Plan

Page 11: Mike Nied Design Portfolio

Approaching the bar, he is greeted by a bartender who serves him a chilled glass of beer. As he pays for the drink the bartender asks what our hero is searching for in the store and inquires as to whether or not he would

Our hero explores the many clothing displayed in the store. With three nooks running the length of the store with a collection of colorful pants located on two tables at the front of the store, there is a lot to take in. One nook is more formal, while another is more casual for a day out with the guys, and the last is dedicated to seasonalwear.Preparedoutfitsandcatalogueimagesaredisplayedamongstthemanyoptions, offering

CLIFFTON LIBRARY...

GROWTH IN KNOWLEDGE

ARC 204: Sophomore Interior Design Studio

Spring Semester 2012

Partner Project with Chelsea Sidman, Jason Ryan, and Susie Sabaitis

Page 16: Mike Nied Design Portfolio

This project was located in Cliffton, a small city just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Our goal was to design an entirely new library for the city. Our project provided space for the people of the city to read and access computers as well as to encompass some sort of community element. Also, since the library is located within an urban center, we wanted to bring some greenery into the city. Our project was successful in all of these elements.

The overarching concept of our project had to do with the growth one experiences while reading books and gaining knowledge. We tried to represent that in a variety of ways throughout the project. Overall, the project was incredibly successful and created a beautiful center for the people of Cliffton to congregate at.

Entry Perspective

The reception desk is composed of wood with a white marble top. The green elements are composed of 3form’s Chroma and are backlit to add interest to the space. This motif is repeated throughout the space. The Chroma is used to create a stacked motif that is evident throughout the rest of our space. It is meant to harken back to expansion and growth, ourconceptwhiledesigning.Eachfloorexpandsbackalittlerecreating this as well as the stacks throughout the upperfloors.Thismotifismeanttocreatethesenseofgrowthas well as to create an interesting geometric shape. A TRANSITIONAL SPACE FOR A TRANSITIONAL FAMILY

ThefamilythatIchosetoworkwithwastheKopperafamily.TheparentsinthefamilyarefirstgenerationimmigrantsfromIndia, and came over shortly after marriage. Doctor and Mrs. Koppera have three daughters, all in their early to mid twenties. The family is the perfect example of a transitional family. The family still pays tribute to their Indian culture by speaking their cultural language, Telugu and dressing in their traditional garb for family celebrtaions, but they have also developed some more American elements. For exmaple, the family is Christian instead of Hindu and all of the daughters have gone to American schools since birth. For this project, I was inspired by the transition and blend between the American and Indian culture for this family. In order to emphasize this concept, I focused on transitional motifs and also on creating a series of spaces that all seemed to grow off of one an-other in a smooth path.

Page 30: Mike Nied Design Portfolio

Liv-Chic is inspired by the sweeping and grand design of the Baroque and Rococo time periods. Work at this time was ground breaking, and stunningly beautiful. Design became more personal at this point, with great emphasis being placed upon bedroom de-sign and personal chambers for each individual in the house. Each space was designed around a concept or concetto which allowed for the spaces to tell stories and be-come something unexpected. Order and symmetry were important during the Baroque period; however, as Rococo became the popular style of design, that regularity broke down and allowed for the ceation of playful, beatiful spaces. Nature and the female form were the main concepts at thispoint, andtheflowingcurvesoftheseinspirationpointsfilledaroom, coatingthestructureinadelicateyetinsistentoverlayofnatural forms overcame the structure associated with past design projects. The delicate women of this era broguth about a wealth of beautiful and playful design aesthetic.

Today, women have more freedoms than ever before. They have the opportunity to write their own stories and be their own woman,andtheyareevenmorebeautifulandcaptivatingasaresult.Thesestrong,independentwomenshouldbeglorified.Goneare the days of the silent women in their petticoats and frothy skirts with their demure personalities. Today a woman can be exactly what she desires. They can be strong, daring, sexy, bright, glamorous, dramatic, shocking, feminine, edgy, daring, independent, rough, tough, glitzy, or anything that their heart desires. Today, this individuality and freedom is what makes women beautiful.
