Migration solutionsfor SICOMP R/M

PC technology has now penetrated all areas of computer applications and has also increasingly developed into the hardware standard for industrial applications. With its current level of safety, this technology offers the right hardware base for all security requirements. Based on its performance and stability, Windows has now become well-established.Applications running on Siemens SICOMP R/M systems can now also benefit from these advances in hardware and software development (interfaces, databases, etc.). A reliable solution to replace the SICOMP R/M system is now available using the M2000 emulator and has already been tried-and-tested in industry. There is now no longer any need for an expensive, abrupt changeover to new systems with a complete redevelopment of user software. Instead, it is possible to migrate to the Windows world in small steps. High development costs, operational disruptions due to tests / start-ups, and unstable operating phases are thus a thing of the past.

Safeguarding investment

The M2000, the emulator for SICOMP R/M, enables you to continue to use the system software you have invested in over the years on open systems.

Mode of operation / compatibility

The SICOMP R/M emulator M2000 consists of a CU emulation and various device emulations. M2000 converts the hardware command set and the layer structure of a Siemens SICOMP R/M mini-computer to the command set of the PC processor. This makes it possible to run a SICOMP R/M software system on a PC under Windows.

An M2000 system behaves in the same way as the original SICOMP R/M system differences are only achieved in terms of improved timing. In the case of devices, either original devices are connected (e.g. data display terminals and printers), compatible devices are used (e.g. stream-ers or data transmission modules) or the devices are compatibly emulated (data display terminals, printers, etc.).

Emulation of the Central Unit (CU)

The CU emulation operates as an inde-pendent process under Windows and reproduces the hardware characteristics (but not the software characteristics) of a SICOMP R/M central unit consistently. Because the hardware priority levels and the interrupt controller are compatibly emulated, the process is administered in the same way as in a genuine SICOMP R/M system.

This means that any software that runs on a SICOMP R/M system can also run on an M2000 system.

Device emulations

Communication with the peripheral de-vices takes place in the same way as in the SICOMP R/M system via SICOMP I/O commands. The relevant devices are represented by device emulations which in turn emulate the relevant device as independent Windows processes. Device emulations are available for all standard devices.

Performance

The performance of today’s processors is much higher than the performance of SICOMP R/M systems. The increase in performance achieved by the use of the M2000 emulator can be further en-hanced by the use of multiple processor systems. The time required by a perfectly configured M2000 system to respond to peripheral events is less than 10 ms.

Migration from SICOMP R/M to M2000

A physical copy of the SICOMP data medium (on tape cartridge or magneto optical disk) is required in order to trans-fer the SICOMP R/M system to a PC run-ning with M2000. The SICOMP system disks are copied into the Windows file system. The binary code compatibility of the emulator ensures that there is no need to modify the SICOMP R/M software. The physical copy of the SICOMP system allows the user system and all utilities and help programs (such as MEDIS and compilers...) to be transferred.

Integration capability

M2000 enables the SICOMP system to be integrated in the Windows world on a gradual basis, while also permitting innovation. To ensure that data can be exchanged between the SICOMP R/M programs and Windows processes, M2000 offers the M2-OPEN package as an option. This consists of the following components:• API for communication and data conversion• Substitute program under SICOMP R/M for access to DVS and ORG files• DDE server for access to DVS and ORG files.

The system offers the following options with M2-OPEN: • Data interchange via a pseudo data

display terminal (DSSK) and a named pipe

• Access by a Windows application to DVS or ORG files via API or DDE• Access by a SICOMP program to Windows databases via ODBC.

System requirements

The requirements for the PC system on which the M2000 emulator is to run de-pend on the configuration and scope of functions of the SICOMP R/M system to be emulated. We would be happy to design the op-timum system configuration for your needs.Talk to us.

Your benefitsFor you M2000 means

• Embedding your application in the PC or Windows world

• Use of market standard, economical PC hardware

• Use of the ongoing improve- ments in hardware performance

• Reduction in service costs

• No additional training for operatives necessary

• A support contract can be concluded
