WSMA State Honors Music ProjectThe Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Honors Music Project began in 1967 to provide musically talented youth with the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the nation’s finest conduc-tors in a professional, highly disciplined setting. In 1995, WSMA proudly sponsored the first-ever Middle Level State Honors Band. A WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir was added in 1996, and in 1997, the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Orchestra made its debut performance.

Students in grades 6-8 who attend WSMA-member schools are eligible to audition for the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Music Project. Auditions include an individual performance and an ensemble class taught by a WSMA certified adjudicator. This year, nearly 1,400 students applied to audition for the privilege of being one of the 305 students selected for member-ship in the three prestigious WSMA Middle Level State Honors ensembles.

Music teachers, parents, administrators and the WSMA staff contribute time, talent and encour-agement for every student involved in the State Honors Music Project. Young musicians selected for these ensembles discover new levels of indi-vidual and group performance. Most importantly, the effort and dedication required of each partici-pant results in a lifelong memory of their initiative, achievement and commitment to excellence as musicians and as our future leaders.

ProgramSanctus in d minor J.S. Bach, arr. David Stocker Hinshaw Music – HMC 1154

The complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) include independent settings of the Sanctus, all of which are from the period that Bach was living in Liepzig. The Sanctus in d minor (BWV 239) was performed during the period from 1735–1746 and is an especially accessible composition for young voices. It is scored for two violins, viola and continuo. The text is from the Latin Mass and is translated:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.

Lux Aeterna Randall Stroope Alliance – AMP 0275

This beautiful and serene setting of the text, Lux Aeterna (Light Eternal) is from the Requiem Mass for the Dead Communion from the Roman Catholic liturgy. From the beginning, the work seems to text paint the beauty of one ray of light…Light Eternal. The piece was written by Dr. A. Randall Stroope and originally dedicated to Dr. James Litton and the American Boychoir. The text is translated: May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord, in the company of thy saints forever and ever; for thou art merciful. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light sine upon them.

Come Travel with Me Scott Farthing Walton HL 08501432

Come Travel With Me was written by Scott Farthing especially for the men of the 2001 ACDA National Junior High Honor Choir in San Antonio, Texas. The text is inspired by the Walt Whitman poem, “Song of the Open Road” and speaks of adventure as it encourages the spirit to explore, travel and face the journey of life not with fear, but with a sense of joyful abandon!

Dance Today With Joy Vijay Singh National Music Publishers NMP

Vijay Singh set this 15th Century Indian (Eastern) text to music in 1998. The text was written by the Indian mystic, Kabir. His poetry urges worship by celebrating the joy of life. The piece incorporates percussion as well as piano and the driving rhythms constantly move from a feeling of compound meter (6/8) to that of triple duple meter (3/4). This is a wonderful piece with lots of inherent energy!

I Dream A World Andre Thomas Heritage Music – 15/1752H

I Dream a World was written by Dr. André Thomas, who is the director of choral activities at Florida State University. The text is wonderful and is by American poet, Langston Hughes. Hughes was an African-American writer and in this poem, describes his dream where all men of all races live in peace, without hate, cruelty, greed and avarice (excessive greed). Truly, this is a dream that is worthy and one which we all should have as members of the human race.

Praise His Holy Name Keith Hampton earthsongs

Praise His Holy Name, written by Keith Hampton, is a contemporary gospel piece that is filled with joy and praising! At the end of the piece, the “lining out” of parts is heard with one voice part entering with a musical statement. Once the statement is made, another voice part enters with a separate statement (while the first part repeats the original phrase). Other voice parts enter with this same format and the end result a complex texture of melody and rhythm. This piece is as much fun to listen to as it is to sing – we hope that you enjoy our performance!

ProgramAn American In Paris Gershwin, George (Arr. Whitney) Belwin

First performed in December 1928, Gershwin had his concept for this work already in mind when he left for Europe in the spring of 1928. Once in Paris his vision came to life and was completed in Vienna. The orchestra-tion was done on a return to Paris. He said An American In Paris was scored in the manner of Debussy but the theme was original. Gershwin called his new work a rhapsodic ballet portraying the impression of an American visitor to Paris as he strolls about the city absorbing the street noises and the French atmosphere.

Fantasy on ‘Sleepers, Wake’ Bach, J. S. (Arr. Vernon Leidig) Highland/Etling

As director of the St. Thomas Church Choir in Leipzig, Bach’s duty made it necessary for him to compose and have ready a new composition for each church day. This chorale is the opening movement of his cantata (BVW 140) Wachet auf, ruft uns di Stimme -- Awake! calls the voice of the watchman. It is a bustling portrait in sound of the city of Jerusalem, waiting at midnight, with watchers posted on the battlements for the arrival of the “bridegroom.” The urgent dotted chords are tossed back and forth between the instrumental sections, relat-ing the restless nature of the crowd. They relay the watchmen’s cries in imitative counterpoint. The choral tune is heard in the long notes of the treble instruments, but it never breaks the energy of the work.

Amazing Grace (Arr. Del Borgo) Belwin

While Amazing Grace is among America’s most well-known and oft-recorded pieces of music, the song’s history is as remarkable as its popularity. Steve Turner’s book Amazing Grace: The Story of America’s Most Beloved Song tells the story of composer John Newton’s conversion from slave trader to abolitionist, and traces the evolution of the song from its composition in 1772 as a hymn with no set tune to the version familiar today.

Amazing Grace was first heard on New Year’s Day in 1773. When Newton put the internal rhyme “amazing grace” together, it wasn’t purely for poetic reasons. He understood grace to mean God’s unmerited favor to lost souls. It was a meaning Newton — with his sordid history and personal tale of redemption — could take to heart.

Newton supplied the lyrics, but the tune sung today arrived much later. In 1835, “...the tune that we now sing... was married to the words of John Newton,” Turner says. That same year a South Carolina singing instructor named William Walker published a widely popular hymn book combining the now-familiar tune with Newton’s words.

Amazing Grace has been featured on more than 1,100 albums. The song reached the pop charts in the United Kingdom and the United States when Judy Collins released her version in 1971.

Nabucco Overture Verdi, Giuseppe (Arr. Dackow) Ludwig Music

After a long apprenticeship in the provincial towns of Italy, the young Giuseppe Verdi had finally reached Milan, experienced success in the production of his first opera, and with that success a commission for three more operas. Tragedy struck, and added to the loss of his two children, was the illness and death of his beloved wife, Margherita in July of 1840. Verdi vowed to never compose music again. However, Merelli, La Scala’s impresario, persuaded Verdi, against his will, to take home a libretto for Nabucodonosor. While still determined not to com-pose, Verdi felt compelled to set to music the dramatic conflict of the Hebrew slaves and their Babylonian cap-tors. The overture, written at the last moment, is a dramatic assortment of themes taken from the opera–primarily choruses and themes trumpeting military exercises to come.

Dance of the Tumblers Rimsky-Korsakov (Arr. Dackow) Tempo Press

Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral genius seemed tailor-made for ballet. Yet, curiously, he opted for the world of opera. For The Snow Maiden (Snegourochka, 1881), the third of his 15 operas, Rimsky-Korsakov elaborated Ostrovsky’s version of the tale. In the celebrated Dance of the Tumblers (Act III) the “tumblers” are skomorokhi, who were troupes of multi-talented outdoor entertainers. Seemingly in a salute to their skills, Rimsky-Korsakov casts his dance in a classical sonata-structure, complete with development section, invigoratingly intensified reprise and a veritable whirlwind of a coda.

This work captures the essence and charm of the Japanese culture. Although no authentic Japanese melody is used, the modality, percussion instruments and style give the impression that you are exploring this exciting culture.

Through Darkened Sleepy Hollow Erik Morale FJH Music Company, Inc.

From the pen of Washington Irvin (1783-1859) came a classic tale of American folklore entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. This story describes how an old legend may have played a part in the disappearance of the local schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane. Irving describes the legend as follows:

“It is said by some to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper, whose head had been carried away by a cannon-ball, in some nameless battle during the revolutionary war; and who is ever and anon seen by the country folk hurrying along in the gloom of night, as if on the wings of the wind.”

“…the ghost rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head; and that the rushing speed with which he sometimes passes along the Hollow, like a midnight blast, is owing to his being belated, and in a hurry to get back to the church-yard before daybreak.”

The Place Where the Reeds Were Destroyed Quincy Hilliard Kjos Publishing Co. WB188F

The Place Where the Reeds Were Destroyed is written in a five movement composition. This work describes a legend about a love story between a warrior and a princess that ultimately depicts how Acapulco got its name. This piece was commission by the Nebraska Bandmasters Association.

March to the Big Top Mark Williams Alfred Publishing Co.

March to the Big Top is circus style march. It attempts to capture the fun and carnival atmosphere of a circus in town.

Deep River James Swearingen Barnhouse Publishing Co.

This selection is based on Deep River. This wonderful song is set for band by the noted composer James Swearingen. It is beautifully scored and has very interesting harmonies. He captures the essence of this beautiful song in a ballad.

endow a chair

for the

WSMA State Honors Music Project

WSMA State Honors Music Project Endowment Fund

In October 2006, the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music announced its most ambitious campaign to date, a $6 million goal to endow each chair and conductor of the WSMA Middle Level and High School State Honors Music Project. With each chair endowed, a student’s cost to participate would be minimal or paid for entirely and the costs to bring in nationally renowned conductors would be covered through this endowment.

WFSM is proud to recognize the following people who contributed generously to name a chair in the Middle Level State Honors Music Project:

Middle Level State Honors Band
