Sergei Rachmaninov All-Night Vigil (Vespers), Op 37

Sergei Rachmaninov was a brilliant Russian pianist and composer, perhaps the last great representative of Russian late Romanticism. He was born in Semyonovo in 1873 and died in 1943 in Beverly Hills. His modern renown is, of course, due to his virtuosic piano concertos which still challenge aspiring concert pianists. However, the work that he himself considered his best is a choral work: his great choral symphony The Bells, which he completed in 1913. Although he composed little in the period after the outbreak of the First World War, he did produce his finest unaccompanied choral work, the All-Night Vigil, Op. 37 (sometimes called Vespers) during a two-week creative burst in the early part of 1915. Later that year, he and his family were able to escape the repressive new Soviet regime permanently, settling in the West.

All-Night Vigil is the preferred title for this work because it contains texts from both the Evening and Morning Services - Vespers and Matins. Rachmaninov was not an outwardly religious man, yet this work - one of the most extraordinary in Russian liturgical music - is deeply imbued with the meanings and feelings of the sacred texts, reaching to the heart of the ancient church chants on which most of it is based. It consists of fifteen hymns and psalms from the Russian Orthodox liturgy, sung not in modern Russian but in ancient Church Slavonic. His sources included six venerable Znamenny (Old Russian) chants, two melodies from Kievian rites and two more from Greek liturgy, as well as five of his own devising, although I defy the listener to distinguish between the traditional and newly-composed chants on the basis of style alone. (The term “Znamenny” refers to old notational signs or neumes.) Compositionally, Rachmaninov used a fascinating mixture of musical styles, ranging from simple unisons, archaic modal harmony and 18th-century-like polyphony to a free modern harmony. His textures are rich and innovative, with great variety from piece to piece and ever expressive connection to the meaning of the text.

In the Orthodox Church the Vigil service takes place on the eve of important feast days. In monasteries, where the full liturgical cycle is most fully observed, the Vigil service for a Sunday will start on Saturday at 6 pm and continue throughout the night until 9 am Sunday morning. This practice is normally modified, of course, in regular circumstances. There are many more hymns, prayers, readings and so forth than the fifteen selections Rachmaninov included in his setting. One can hear a slight change of character, though, as the composer leaves the more meditative and peaceful texts of the evening service (the first six movements) to the more declamatory style, whether celebratory or in lamentation, of the Morning service (the last nine).

A movement-by-movement guide

1 | In the Vespers section, the first movement is a fervent call to worship.

Priidite, poklonimsia Tsarevi nashemu Bogu. Come, let us worship God, our King.Priidite, poklonimsia i pripadem Come, let us worship and fall downHristu Tsarevi nashemu Bogu. before Christ, our King and our God.Priidite, poklonimsia i pripadem Come, let us worship and fall downsamomu Hristu Tsarevi i Bogu nashemu. before the very Christ, our King and our God.Priidite, poklonimsia i pripadem Yemu. Come, let us worship and fall down before Him.

2 | The second movement is a Psalm 103 setting with alto solo in praise of God’s marvellous creation of the world.

Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Ghospoda, Bless the Lord, O my soul, blagosloven yesi, Ghospodi. blessed art Thou, O Lord.Ghospodi Bozhe moy, vozvelichilsia yesi zelo. O Lord my God, Thou art very great.Blagosloven yesi, Ghospodi. Blessed art Thou, O Lord.Vo ispovedaniye i v velelepotu obleklsia yesi. Thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Blagosloven yesi, Ghospodi. Blessed art Thou, O Lord.Na gorah stanut vodï. The waters stand upon the mountains.Divna dela Tvoya, Ghospodi. Marvellous are Thy works, O Lord.Posrede gor proydut vodï. The waters flow between the hills.Divna dela Tvoya, Ghospodi. Marvellous are Thy works, O Lord.Fsia premudrostiyu sotvoril yesi. In wisdom hast Thou made all things.Slava Ti, Ghospodi, sotvorivshemu fsia. Glory to Thee, O Lord, who hast created all!

3 | The third movement uses the opening words of the Psalter to acknowledge our fall into sin, punctuated with repeated Alleluias which remind us of God’s salvation.

Blazhen muzh, izhe ne ide na sovet nechestivïh. Blessed is the man, who walks not in the counsel of the wicked. Alliluiya, alliluiya, alliluiya. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.Yako vest Ghospod put pravednïh, For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,i put nechestivïh pogibnet. but the way of the wicked will perish.Rabotayte Ghospodevi so strahom, Serve the Lord with feari raduytesia Yemu s trepetom. and rejoice in Him with trembling.Blazheni fsi nadeyushchiisia nan. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.Voskresni, Ghospodi, spasi mia, Bozhe moy. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God!Ghospodne yest spaseniye Salvation is of the Lord;i na liudeh Tvoih blagosloveniye Tvoye. and Thy blessing is upon Thy people.Slava Ottsu, i Sïnu, i Sviatomu Duhu, Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,i nïne i prisno i vo veki vekov. Amin. both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.Slava Tebe, Bozhe. Glory to Thee, O God!

4 | Fourth is a tranquil Evening Hymn which tells us that every moment of the day is appropriate for the praising of God in hymns.

Svete tihiy sviatïya slavï Bessmertnago, Gladsome Light of the holy glory of the Immortal One—Ottsa Nebesnago, Sviatago, Blazhennago, the Heavenly Father, holy and blessed—Iisuse Hriste. O Jesus Christ! Prishedshe na zapad solntsa, Now that we have come to the setting of the sun, videvshe svet vecherniy, and behold the light of evening, poyem Ottsa, Sïna i Sviatago Duha, Boga. we praise the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—God.Dostoin yesi vo fsia vremena Thou art worthy at every momentpet bïti glasï prepodobnïmi, to be praised in hymns by reverent voices.Sïne Bozhïy, zhïvot dayay, O Son of God, Thou art the Giver of Life;temzhe mir Tia slavit. therefore all the world glorifies Thee.

5 | Fifth comes the Nunc Dimittis, or Prayer of St. Simeon, a familiar text in which the Old Testament elder thanks God for letting him see salvation - Christ - before his death.

Nïne otpushchayeshï raba Tvoyego, Vladïko, Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servantpo glagolu Tvoyemu s mirom, depart in peace, according to Thy word. yako videsta ochi moi spaseniye Tvoye, For mine eyes have seen Thy Salvation, yezhe yesi ugotoval pred litsem vseh liudey, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people:svet vo otkroveniye yazïkov, a light to enlighten the Gentiles, i slavu liudey Tvoih Izrailia. and to be the glory of Thy people Israel.

6 | Movement six is an Ave Maria (Hail Mary), a quiet tribute to the Virgin signifying the end of the Vespers portion of the work.

Bogoroditse Devo, raduysia, Rejoice, O Virgin Mother of God,Blagodatnaya Mariye, Ghospod s Toboyu. Mary full of grace, the Lord is with Thee.Blagoslovenna Tï v zhenah, Blessed art Thee among women, i blagosloven Plod chreva Tvoyego, and blessed is the Fruit of Thy womb, yako Spasa rodila yesi dush nashïh. for Thou hast borne the Saviour of our souls.

7 | Movement seven, the first of the Matins section, is a Gloria written in a brilliantly orchestrated style which then suddenly gives way to a poignant silence, itself followed by a deeply personal profession of praise.

Slava v vïshnih Bogu, i na zemli mir, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,v chelovetseh blagovoleniye. good will among men.Ghospodi, ustne moi otverzeshï, O Lord, open Thou my lips,i usta moya vozvestiat hvalu Tvoyu. and my mouth shall proclaim Thy praise.

8 | The eighth movement is another pæan to the Lord, thanking him for his mercy with multiple Alleluias, as in the third movement.

Hvalite imia Ghospodne. Alliluiya. Praise the name of the Lord. Alleluia.Hvalite, rabi Ghospoda. Alliluiya. Praise the Lord, O you His servants. Alleluia.Blagosloven Ghospod ot Siona, Blessed be the Lord from Zion,zhïvïy vo Iyerusalime. Alliluiya. He who dwells in Jerusalem. Alleluia.Ispovedaytesia Ghospodevi, yako blag. O give thanks unto the God of Heaven.Yako v vek milost Yego. Alliluiya. for His mercy endures forever. Alleluia.

9 | Movement nine, continuing the Morning Service, is almost operatic in its narrative treatment of the resurrection. It recountsand celebrates the events at the tomb - the mourners’ lamentations by the graveside, the comforting words of the Angel, the

amazement of the women at finding the grave empty and their joy when they behold that the Lord has risen.

Blagosloven yesi, Ghospodi, Blessed art Thou, O Lord, nauchi mia opravdaniyem Tvoim. teach me Thy statutes.Angelskiy sobor udivisia, The angelic host was filled with awe, zria Tebe v mertvïh vmenivshasia, when it saw Thee among the dead.smertnuyu zhe, Spase, By destroying the power of death, krepost razorivsha, O Saviour,i s Soboyu Adama vozdvigsha, Thou didst raise Adam,i ot ada fsia svobozhdsha. and save all men from hell!

10 | The tenth movement is a hymn-like meditation on the significance of the resurrection.

Voskreseniye Hristovo videvshe, Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, poklonimsia Sviatomu Ghospodu Iisusu, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, yedinomu bezgreshnomu. the only Sinless One. He has destroyed death by death.

11 | Eleven is one of the most venerable of Christian texts, the Magnificat (Mary’s words to the angel Gabriel upon learning that she is to bear the Son of God.) It has many contrasts of tempo and volume, with a sprightly refrain in the sopranos and some stately remembrances of God’s blessings in the basses.

Velichit dusha Moya Ghospoda, My soul doth magnify the Lord,i vozradovasia duh Moy o Boze Spase Moyem. and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. INTERMISSION

Remembering Phillip Hewett

When I initially came to Vancouver just over 50 years ago, my first position here was as Music Director at the Unitarian Church on the corner of 49th and Oak. I, of course, conducted the choir, but the job was bigger than that, for the minister there was the Reverend Phillip Hewett, a brilliant and perceptive thinker who wrote “sermons” and organized services around an amazingly wide and varied range of topics, from the most current of political or ethical issues to the most elusive and thought-provoking philosophical concerns. It was my job to work with him in providing stimulating or reflective musical and poetical contexts within which to couch his always insightful thoughts. We ended up with an equally wide range of musical experiences for the congregation – sometimes beautifully crafted, sometimes a little jarring as our experiments went astray. But it was exciting to assist Phillip, who approached the worship service, I think, as a truly creative work of art. At least, that was our goal.

As time moved on and I started professional musical activities in the city, Phillip was always there to support and advise. When I started the Vancouver Chamber Choir in 1971, he and his wife Margaret were the first to become subscribers and multi-decade fans. Both Phillip and Margaret did stints on the Vancouver Chamber Choir Board of Directors, a valiant task, suitable only for the intrepid. But it is the sight of the tall, silver-haired man in the audience that I’m going to miss most. When he was there, I knew that our striving for excellence was being understood, the poetry in our songs was being appreciated and that our world was a better place for all who had been there.

Phillip Hewett passed away recently, but I’ll be thinking of him tonight as we try to make sense of the world through sharing music together.

Gabriel FauréMesse basse

Fauré’s most famous composition is undoubtedly his exquisite setting of the Requiem Mass. His only other setting of Mass texts is the Messe basse (or Low Mass). This music, perhaps even less dramatic than the Requiem, is however its equal in loveliness. The original version had very modest forces - treble voices and organ. Tonight’s version, however, has been arranged for mixed voices and orchestrated for chamber orchestra by the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s artistic director Jon Washburn. An earlier version of this edition is recorded on the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s compact disc called Missa Brevis.

Kyrie Kyrie eleison, Lord, have mercy on us. Christe eleison. Christ, have mercy on us. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy on us.

Sanctus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Lord God of Hosts. Pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua. Heaven and earth are filled with Thy glory. Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictus Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Agnus Dei Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world, miserere nobis. have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world, dona nobis pacem. grant us peace.

Morten Lauridsen Lux æterna

Morten Lauridsen is an American choral composer of the foremost rank. Composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1994 to 2001, he has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 40 years. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Lauridsen worked as a Forest Service firefighter and lookout (on an isolated tower near Mt. St. Helens) and attended Whitman College before traveling south to study composition at the USC with Ingolf Dahl, Halsey Stevens, Robert Linn, and Harold Owen. He began teaching at USC himself in 1967 and has been on their faculty ever since. In 2006, Lauridsen was named an “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2007 he received the National Medal of Arts from the President in a White House ceremony, “for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide.”

Programme notes based on comments by the composer

Lux æterna (Eternal Light) is an intimate work of quiet serenity centered around a universal symbol of hope, reassurance, goodness and illumination at all levels. Although this work formed in Lauridsen’s mind over several years, he began serious work on it in 1993. He put it aside in early 1994 to compose his famous Christmas canticle, O magnum mysterium (recorded by the Vancouver Chamber Choir on their CD A Quiet Place.) The serenity and uncomplicated lyrical style of O magnum are continued in Lux æterna, which is fashioned on texts from several different Latin sources, including the Requiem mass, each text containing a reference to Light. The work was composed for the Los Angeles Master Chorale whose conductor at that time was Paul Salamunovich, a foremost expert on Gregorian chant and Renaissance music. While not incorporating any overt references to single-line chant per se anywhere in the piece, there is indeed a chant influence. Conjunct, flowing melodic lines contribute to the work’s overall lyricism, chant-like phrase structures create a seamlessness throughout, and other medieval and Renaissance procedures abound throughout Lux æterna.

INTROITUS

The Introitus introduces a complex of themes that are used throughout the cycle and are constructed on ecclesiastical modes found in medieval and Renaissance music, especially the mixolydian and dorian. A primarily consonant chordal vocabulary reflects the purity and directness of Renaissance sacred music, as in the music of Palestrina and Victoria. A subsidiary theme on Te decet hymnus will later be reformulated to become the principal theme of the Agnus Dei. Renaissance contrapuntal procedure is manifested in a four-part canon on et lux perpetua, a method of portraying musically, or painting, the textual meaning of perpetual light.

Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine: Rest eternal grant them, O Lord:et lux perpetua luceat eis, and let perpetual light shine on them.Te decet hymnus Deus in Zion, To thee praise is due, O God, in Zion,et tibi redetur votum and to thee vows are recitedin Jerusalem: in Jerusalem:exaudi orationem meam, hear my prayer,ad te omnis caro veniet. unto thee shall all flesh come.Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine: Rest eternal grant them, O Lord:et lux perpetua luceat eis. and let perpetual light shine on them.

IN TE, DOMINE, SPERAVI

The second movement most clearly exemplifies Lauridsen’s use of Renaissance formal procedures and textures. The masses of Josquin, for example, often contain sections of paired voices. That particular device is used in In te, Domine, speravi - sopranos paired with altos, tenors paired with basses on the lengthy two-part mirror canon fiat misericordia at the center of the movement, incorporating the idea of self-reflection as well as a dialogue between Man and Creator. He also employs the idea of cantus firmus in the hymn tune Herzliebster Jesu from the Nuremberg Songbook of 1677, stated in full in solo brass instruments as an underpinning to the paired voice treatment. This movement is particularly introspective, personal, complex, reflective, and thoughtful.

Tu ad liberandum suscepturus hominem Thou, having delivered mankind, non horruisti Virginis uterum. did not disdain the Virgin’s womb.Tu devicto mortis aculeo, Thou overcame the sting of death, aperuisti credentibus regna cœlorum. and opened to believers the kingdom of heaven.Exortum est in tenebris lumen rectis. To the righteous a light is risen up in darkness.

Miserere nostri, Domine, Have mercy on us, O Lord, miserere nostri. have mercy on us.Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos Let thy mercy be upon us, O Lord, quemadmodum speravimus in te. for we have hoped in thee.In te Domine, speravi: O Lord, in Thee have I hoped:non confundar in æternum. let me never be confounded.

O NATA LUX

The central movement of the work, O nata lux, is an unaccompanied motet. The motet form itself can be traced back for centuries. Here is an opportunity in the middle of a choral/orchestral composition for the chorus to sing without any orchestral accompaniment – a pure vocal sound.

O nata lux de lumine, O born light of light,Jesu redemptor sæculi, Jesu redeemer of the world, dignare clemens supplicum mercifully deem worthy and acceptlaudes preces que sumere. praises and prayers from your supplicants.Qui carne quondam contegi Who once was clothed in the fleshdignatus es pro perditis. for those who are lost.Nos membra confer effici, Allow us to become members oftui beati corporis. your holy body.

VENI, SANCTE SPIRITUS

Immediately following the conclusion of O nata lux is the exuberant song Veni, Sancte Spiritus, a movement as outgoing and joyous as O nata lux is introspective. It is cast in a five-part rondo form, which can be traced back to the medieval and Renaissance periods.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus Come, Holy Spirit,et emitte cœlitus And send from heavenlucis tuæ radium. Your ray of light.Veni, pater pauperum, Come, Father of the poor, veni, dator munerum, Come, giver of gifts, veni, lumen cordium Come, light of hearts.

Consolator optime, The best of Consolers, dulcis hospes animæ, Sweet guest of the soul, dulce refrigerium. Sweet refreshment. In labore requies, In labor, thou art rest,in æstu temperies, In heat, thou art the tempering,in fletu solatium In grief, thou art the consolation.

O lux beatissima, O light most blessed, reple cordis intima Fill the inmost heartTuorum fidelium. Of all thy faithful.Sine tuo numine, Without your grace, nihil est in homine, There is nothing in us. nihil est innoxium. Nothing that is not harmful.

Lava quod est sordidum, Cleanse what is dirty, riga quod est aridum, Moisten what is dry, sana quod est saucium. Heal what is hurt.Flecte quod est rigidum, Flex what is rigid, fove quod est frigidum, Heat what is frigid, rege quod est devium. Correct what goes astray.

AGNUS DEI - LUX AETERNA

The closing movement combines the Agnus Dei and the Lux æterna, which reprises the opening section of the Introitus, creating a musical arch, a form that is found in much of Lauridsen’s music. The idea of the retrograde in music, again common in the masses of Josquin is also found here - the wind progression at the opening of the Agnus Dei is answered by the strings in an exact retrograde several measures later. The musical material of the Agnus Dei is reformulated for a third time to become the basis of a short joyful Alleluia which also combines motivic fragments from other preceding movements. The piece closes softly, as it began, with a concluding amen.

Agnus Dei, Lamb of God,qui tollis peccata mundi, who takes away the sins of the world, dona eis requiem. grant them rest.

Agnus Dei, Lamb of God,qui tollis peccata mundi, who takes away the sins of the world, dona eis requiem. grant them rest.

Agnus Dei, Lamb of God,qui tollis peccata mundi, who takes away the sins of the world, dona eis requiem sempiternam. grant them rest everlasting.

Lux æterna luceat eis, Domine: May eternal light shine on them, O Lord:cum sanctis tuis in æternum: with the company of thy saints for ever and ever:quia pius es. for thou art merciful.

Requiem æternum dona eis, Domine, Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, et lux perpetua luceat eis. And let perpetual light shine on them.

Alleluia. Amen. Alleluia. Amen.
