Travelling from Portsmouth in

England to Britain’s new colonial

possession in what was then

known as New South Wales, the

voyage of the First Fleet under

Captain Arthur Phillip is one of

the most important events in the

history of the Australian nation.

Between December 1786 and

March 1787, the eleven ships of the

First Fleet – comprising two naval

escorts, six convict transports

and three storeships – assembled

at the Motherbank, a sheltered

anchorage off the Isle of Wight

near Portsmouth. Here, those

ships that had not already loaded

on the Thames or at Plymouth

took on stores, marine guards

and convicts. On 2 March 1786,

over 200 convicts were brought

overland to Point Beach, a landing

near the entrance of Portsmouth

Harbour.

A gale prevented authorities from

taking the convicts out to the

ships, so they were accommodated

on board HMS Gorgon at anchor

across the harbour entrance. A

few days later, the weather had

improved enough for large barges

to take the convicts out to the

Motherbank. In all about 800 male

and female convicts and nearly

260 marines with their wives and

children boarded the ships bound

for Botany Bay.

The Fleet set sail eastwards to

work around the Isle of Wight but

the breeze fell away, compelling

them to remain at anchor at

Spithead and the Motherbank.

On 13 May 1787, with a full

complement of about 1,500 souls,

the Fleet enjoyed a favourable

easterly breeze, and sailed

westward into the English Channel

and on to the open sea.

Thus commenced one of the

largest fleet operations and

greatest single migration

movements of the time.

The

first plants

to spring from the

shattered battlefields of

northern France and Belgium, the blood red

poppy has long been considered the key symbol for Remembrance Day – the annual commemoration of the Armistice declared on November the 11th 1918 that brought an end to hostilities in WWI.

Symbolising ‘the sacrifice of shed blood’, with military folklore proclaiming that the vivid red hues of the poppy were produced by the blood of their comrades soaking into the ground, the poppy has become the most powerful symbol of Remembrance Day. This is in part due to the poem ‘In Flanders fields’, written at the Battle of Ypres in France in 1915 by Canada’s Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

Beyond its importance in commemorating the fallen, and symbolising the sacrifice of all those who have fought in war, the poppy quickly became synonymous with helping the living as well. The forerunner to the RSL first sold poppies to help ex-servicemen and their families as far back as 1921, and this tradition has grown stronger with every passing year.

Struck by Britain’s Royal Mint, the 2012 £5 Remembrance Day BU and 2012 £5 Remembrance Day Silver Proof are distinctive, memorable tributes to those lost in war. Very popular, as with all military commemoratives, there is no doubt that demand has been driven

by the quality of the design. Capturing the poppy’s

dramatic hues perfectly, the full-colour motif found on each official legal tender issue has been created using a trichromatic

technique, which layers different

shades and colours onto the coin.

One of Downies most popular Australian military commemorative offers in recent years, we are delighted to announce that we now have fresh stock of the historic Airman’s Code Set.

A stylish, impressive tribute to the Royal Australian Air Force – established in 1921 and thus the second oldest Air Force in the world – this stunning presentation pays homage to the RAAF’s ‘Airman’s Code’. The Airman’s Code was introduced by the RAAF to provide its personnel with a tangible expression of the principles of the organisation. Underpinned by the RAAF’s rich history, the Code encapsulates the pride of all RAAF personnel in their commitment to the Australian nation.Capturing the essence of this important statement of beliefs, and representing the proud history and vital future role of the RAAF, the Airman’s Code Set is headlined by a 50mm silver-plated brass Proof medallion depicting an Airco DH.9A and a F/A-18F Super Hornet, with a line from the Airman’s Code upon the obverse. A fine complement, the set also comprises two superb recreations of RAAF insignia – one featuring the Tudor Crown (employed when the monarch is a King), one featuring St Edward’s Crown (used when a Queen is on the throne).Outstanding value-for-money at less than A$90, the complete collection is set within a timber case adorned with an RAAF badge with the full text of the Airman’s Code inscribed on the inside of the lid.

Historic, beautifully presented and excellent value-for-money, the History of the Rising Sun Badge Collection forms an inspiring tribute to one of Australia’s first and most important national emblems. An integral part of Australia’s ‘digger tradition’, the Rising Sun Badge originated in the aftermath of Federation, when a unifying national symbol was required for the Australian troops setting off for the Boer war in South Africa in 1902. Proudly worn by Australian soldiers for more than a century since, there have been seven different versions of this famous insignia – all of which are represented in this collection! Comprising accurate, full-size die-cast recreations of the seven Rising Sun Badge types worn since 1902, this set symbolises

an imperative element of Australia’s history as a nation. Housed in a handsome timber case, this stirring piece of Australian military history is within your reach at an average price of A$14 per badge.

the near crown-sized 36.60mm flan, the budgie’s familiar

green and yellow hues have been captured perfectly by the

craftsmen at the Mint.A must-have for those seeking to assemble this affordable 5-coin series, each .999 fine silver Australian legal tender coin is housed in an official case with a Certificate of Authenticity. Headlined by the RAM’s ‘not-issued-for-circulation’ 25mm Al-Br Australian legal tender coin, the 2012 $1 Mawson PNC also features three official Australian Antarctic Territory stamps. Set upon a superbly illustrated official envelope, the two $1.20 stamps and single 60c stamp celebrate the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition – one of the key events in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

With Australian society so heavily underpinned by the volunteer ethic, it will come as no great shock that the 2011 20c Volunteers PNC has proved to be among the most popular PNCs offered by Downies in recent times. Featuring the Royal Australian Mint’s beautifully designed, highly symbolic 2011 International Year of Volunteers 20c Unc, each PNC also comprises a 60c stamp united with a Year

of Volunteers Cinderella. Whether to honour Australia’s many volunteers, or to secure a pristine Uncirculated example of the RAM’s unique, one-year-only 20c, this poignant PNC is a must-have at just A$15.95.

With co-operative business models forming a fundamental element of Australia’s socio-economic landscape from the time of the 1850s Gold Rush, the 2012 $1 International Year of Co-Operatives PNC has relevance to every Australian. Moreover, as this unique official Australia Post PNC release is headlined by a one-year-only $1 type from the Royal Australian Mint, it is of particular relevance to the serious decimal collector. Not to be issued for circulation, and never found in change, this official PNC is a crucial acquisition for those attempting to keep their

collections complete!

plethora of PNCs! The race is on! Grace and poise…

Ace release a smash hit!

Two-in-one!

A must-have for car fanatics and PNC collectors alike, this

superbly presented PNC forms a cracking tribute to the 50th anniversary of Australia’s greatest endurance race – the Bathurst 1000.

Whilst the RAM’s unique, ‘not-issued-for-circulation’ Australian legal tender

50c type will attract great attention, demand for this new PNC will be driven by the quality of the presentation – and the set of four eye-catching stamps. Graced with a striking depiction of Mount Panorama, the official envelope carries a

60c stamp depicting the Bathurst track,

united with three 60c stamps portraying winners of Australia’s most famous car race.

As balanced and graceful as any of the dancers who have performed in the Australian Ballet over its first 50 years, this captivating PNC from Australia Post forms the perfect way to secure a lasting keepsake of this important anniversary milestone. Distinguished by the presence of the Royal Australian Mint’s superb one-year-only Australian legal tender 50c – a coin that

will not be issued for circulation and never found in change – each PNC also features an official Australia Post 60c stamp, set upon a beautifully illustrated official envelope. Irresistible value-for-money at less than A$20!

Proving to be one of the most popular recent PNC issues, this exclusive tribute to the Australian Open 100th Men’s Champion has been a smash hit with sports fans and collectors alike! Featuring an official Australia Post 60c stamp united with an Australian Open Cinderella, this unique PNC is headlined by the RAM’s crown-sized 38.74mm Australian legal tender Al-Zn-Br $5

Australian Open BU. An extremely exclusive collectable release, with the limited edition restricted to a mere 10,000, we have very few of this memorable sporting commemorative remaining in stock.

Sure to be highly sought after by tennis fans and PNC collectors alike, this official tribute to the 100th Australian Open is simply a compulsory acquisition for decimal coin collectors. Previously only available individually, the two 25mm Al-Br Australian legal tender coins found in this pack have not been issued for circulation and are a must-have for anyone keen to maintain a complete collection!

The first Roman Emperor portrayed with a beard, and best known for Hadrian’s Wall – the fortification built across

Britain to nullify the threat

of the inhabitants of the north – Hadrian (117-38AD)

is somewhat of enigma. Although modern writers

tend to view him as enlightened and open-minded,

his character echoed the excesses of evil emperors

such as Nero and Domitian. What is beyond question

is his success as ruler, as he

Taking you on a journey to the time of Christ, the small bronze coins issued during the latter part of the Hasmonaean Dynasty

– guaranteed as genuine! The glory of Ancient gold…

In absolutely magnificent condition, this spectacular 2,300-year-old-gold coin from Ancient Greece was issued as a commemorative in the first decade after the untimely death of Alexander the Great – King of Macedon, and one of the most influential figures of Ancient history. The ultimate acquisition for any Ancient coin collector, we have just three examples available – each in rarely seen good Very Fine quality.

Despite a successful and prosperous reign, highlighted by the victorious conclusion of the war against Persia, the rule of Maurice Tiberius (582-602AD) illustrates the precarious nature of Byzantine politics. Depicted on the obverse of this beautiful, high-grade Gold Solidus, Maurice was gruesomely slain along with his six sons by the usurper Phocas, with the bodies of the family hurled into the sea.

Virtually as good as the day they were handstruck, some 1,500 years ago, these superbly preserved Solidii from the Emperor Justin II (565-578AD) represents a sensational opportunity to own a genuine, high-grade gold coin from the early days of the Byzantine Empire. Well-centred, and carrying a strong facing portrait of the Emperor on the obverse, we have just a few coins in stock.

Struck during the reign of one of the earliest Byzantine Emperors, Anastasius I (491-518AD), these superb Gold Solidii are a must-have for the quality alone. In virtually As Struck condition, and highlighted by a detailed depiction of the Emperor, each of the few 1,500 year old coins we have available is in about Extremely Fine condition.

A sensational opportunity to acquire a .9999 fine silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, Downies takes great pleasure in presenting the COMPLETE 2011-12 $20 Silver BU Collection! Whilst sure to command the attention of those with an appreciation for quality, beauty and purity, the tremendous affordability of this sensational silver selection makes the set a must-have for those with an eye for a bargain.

A fantastic initiative, specifically aimed at bringing pure silver coinage within the reach of as many people as possible, the Royal Canadian Mint originally issued these impressive $20 coins at face value. The first in the series, celebrating Canada’s most powerful symbol of national identity, the Maple Leaf, proved to be one of the biggest hits of 2011, with the limited edition of 200,000 devastated by demand. The entire mintage sold out at the Mint in just 29 days! Despite increasing the mintage of the brilliantly designed 2011 $20 Canoe Silver BU in response to demand for the Maple $20, the limited edition of 250,000 was blown away almost as quickly. Indeed, that seemingly generous mintage sold out at the Mint in an astonishing 34 days and, like the Maple $20, this coin has vanished from the market. Mirroring the barnstorming success of their predecessors, the 2012 Polar Bear $20 and 2012 Diamond Jubilee $20 have all sold out at the Mint – with a majority of the mintages of the new 2012 Farewell to the Penny $20 and 2012 Magical Reindeer $20 already wiped out! Following a rigorous search of the international secondary market, Downies is proud to announce that we have ALL SIX of these spectacular .9999 fine silver coins in stock! Very affordable individually, buy the complete set of six and SAVE A$34.95!

A sensational start to what is sure to prove one of the most popular collector programs of 2013, the Perth Mint’s 2013 $1 Summer 1oz Silver Proof has sparked a firestorm of demand worldwide. From Queensland to Quebec, everybody wants this coin!

The first in a 4-coin series celebrating the four seasons, and the very first square 1oz silver Australian legal tender coin issued by the Mint since 2006, it is no surprise that the 2013 $1 Summer 1oz Silver Proof has created such a heat wave of demand. Distinguished by a bright, vibrant full-colour design uniting the iconic kangaroo with a traditional Australian beach scene, this superbly struck precious metal Proof forms a fantastic tribute to the great Aussie summer – and an exclusive one. Measuring 33.20mm x 33.20mm, and crafted to the finest Proof quality from a troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this unusual square coin is beautifully presented within an official case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. That Certificate stands as official confirmation of the astonishingly low mintage. Guaranteeing a sell-out, the

Perth Mint has restricted that mintage to a remarkably low 5,000! With demand so strong both at home and abroad, we highly recommend that you grasp the opportunity to secure this memorable Australian legal tender issue at the Mint’s Official Issue Price.

A great chance to own a genuine Australian legal tender ‘Mule’, the 2005 Roos $1 is a coin that was ‘never meant to be struck’. Although realising that 2005 obverse dies had mistakenly been matched with a Roos reverse, the RAM decided to continue production to avoid publicity from issuing a low-mintage $1 Mule!
