The Three Kings of 1936One of very few occasions in the history of the English/British monarchy that three individuals had been monarch in the same calendar year, 1936 is known as the Year of the Three Kings. It was in this year – exactly three-quarters of a century ago – that George V and his sons, Edward VIII and George VI, all ruled as king.

George V, who acceded to the throne in 1910, enjoyed a long if exhausting reign as Britain’s king, having overseen the 1914-18 Great War, and guided Britain through the Depression.

Suffering ill health throughout the latter part of his reign, George V died peacefully on 20 January 1936. George’s son, Edward, was proclaimed king upon the death of his father, becoming King Edward VIII. Having undertaken many of his father’s duties while he was ill, Edward was ready to take on the role of monarch – but only on his terms. His determination to wed American divorcee Wallis Simpson created a crisis, with the government of the day set to resign if the wedding went ahead. Edward was forced to choose between love and duty, and, rather than give up Mrs Simpson, he abdicated on 11 December 1936 – just 325 days after coming to power. Never expecting to be King, but ultimately proving to be an able leader, George VI acceded to the throne as a result of Edward’s abdication – Britain’s 3rd king within the space of 11 months! Unique, prestigious and exclusive, these flawless gold and silver Proofs form a memorable tribute to the 75th anniversary of an extraordinary year in British history.

The Three Kings – enshrined in Silver & Gold!An imposing tribute to one of the most dramatic years in British history – comprising a massive 50 grams of .999 fine silver! – the 2011 $5 Three Kings of 1936 Silver Proof has predictably been met with overwhelming demand. With the mintage restricted to just 2,500, time is of the essence for anyone keen to be one of the few to enjoy this spellbinding fusion of pure gold and fine silver. Struck by Swiss precious metal specialists Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux (PAMP), the intense interest in this exquisite Silver Proof is largely due to the employment of a truly inspired reverse design. A rare opportunity for collectors to own a genuine legal tender coin distinguished by the official portrait of King Edward VIII, the large 35.20mm x 35.20mm flan unites the effigy of the reluctant king with those of his predecessor and successor – King George V and King George VI. Designed by EB Mackennal (George V) and Thomas Paget (Edward VIII and George VI), the conjoined

official portraits of the Three Kings of 1936 look absolutely magnificent when precisely enhanced with pure, prestigious gold. One of few selectively gold-plated Silver Proofs available on the market today, and a coin of obvious appeal to collectors of Australian and Commonwealth coinage, the 2011 $5 Three Kings of 1936 50g Silver Proof is also notable for the impressive presentation. Thick and weighty, each of these unique diamond-shaped legal tender issues is housed within a large, lavish timber case, accompanied by an individually serial-numbered Certificate of Authenticity confirming the worldwide mintage. With that mintage restricted to a mere 2,500 coins, and initial demand so strong, we must advise our clients to grasp what will undoubtedly be one of few opportunities to guarantee supply of this highly distinctive precious metal Proof.

Award Winners – and their successors!COINS OF THE YEAR!The world’s leading system of numismatic honours, the collector fraternity eagerly awaits news of the annual Coin of the Year Awards – announced at the world’s premier numismatic extravaganza, the World Money Fair in Berlin. Sponsored by Krause Publications for nearly three decades, the Coin of the Year Awards honours the finest achievements in international coin designs, themes and marketing. Each year, a panel of judges – including authors, editors, numismatists and members of the American Numismatic Association – receives entries from the key mints and issuing authorities from all over the world. After careful consideration, a list of nominees is selected for several categories, with the nominees then judged by an international panel of mint and museum officials, journalists and experts, to decide upon both category winners and ultimately the Coin of the Year. Due to the painstaking, lengthy nature of the process, the Coin of the Year Awards consider coins issued two years before the holding of the event, so that coins released this year will only become eligible for nomination for the 2013 Coin of the Year Awards.

In attendance at the 2011 Coin of the Year Awards in Germany, Downies is delighted to give our clients the chance to obtain some of the award-winning releases, as well as a variety of successors.

In 2009, the Royal Australian Mint’s 2007 $15 Kangaroo at Sunset 1/5oz Gold Proof was nominated for Peoples’ Choice Coin of the Year. In 2009, a series

of silver coins struck by the RAM bearing the same stunning design was

unveiled, and, issued annually, it has become the peoples’ choice as well! A sensational opportunity for our clients,

we have the unusual privilege of presenting the hotly pursued COMPLETE 2009-11 $1 Kangaroo at Sunset 1oz Silver Proof Collection!Struck to the most immaculate Proof quality, the Kangaroo at Sunset design looks particularly fetching in pure .999 silver. A dramatic blend of detail and perspective, with the use of the Roo’s shadow a particularly effective

artistic device, it’s easy to see why this motif has attracted such widespread international acclaim. Perfectly accommodated by the broad, imposing 40mm flan, the chance to enjoy this design ‘in the flesh’ is within your reach – all thanks to the international coin program for which

GREAT LEAP FORWARD

A breathtaking breakthrough for

the art of numismatics, with a heart of aqua crystal encircled by

pure silver, it’s not hard to see why the 2009 £2 Turtle Crystal Silver Proof was chosen as the Most Innovative Coin of the 2011 Coin of the Year Awards. Struck to impeccable Proof quality by Britain’s Pobjoy Mint, the 23.45g loop of sterling silver tells the tale of the extraordinary life cycle of the turtle – from nesting, to hatching, to its perilous journey across the sand, to its maturation and ultimate return to the beach where it was born to lay eggs some 40 or 50 years later.

Providing an exceptional contrast with the sterling silver, it is the presence of the aqua crystal centre that has seen this British Indian Ocean Territory legal tender issue catch the eye of the global collector community, and the Most Innovative Coin Award was just recognition of a truly original legal tender release. Extremely exclusive, with a mere 5,000 struck, we have only a tiny number of these 38.61mm coins in stock – each set in a case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The latest in one of the world’s most innovative legal tender series – evidenced by the award-winning Turtle coin above – we were fortunate to acquire a small number of the 2011 $10 Frog Crystal Silver Proof! Comprising 23.45g of

sterling silver, and limited to a mintage of 5,000, this startling British Virgin Islands $10 captures the life cycle of the frog, and is highlighted by the same stunning crystal core that distinguishes the turtle coin!

Stunning opportunity! First & Last Prefix $10 notes!

A tantalising opportunity to leap into one of the hottest areas of note collecting, we are delighted to present this important run of $10 notes from 1997 to 2003 – including THREE First Prefix and THREE Last Prefix types! Encompassing the end of the Macfarlane/Evans signature combination, and the start of the Macfarlane/Henry signature combination, we have nine $10 types available. Including general prefix notes for 1997, 1998 and 2002, this scintillating selection is most notable for the presence of the 1998 $10 AA98 First Annual Prefix, 2002 $10 AA02 First Signature Prefix, 2003 $10 AA03 First Annual Prefix AND 1998 $10 GL98 Last Signature Prefix, 2002 $10 GL02 Last Annual Prefix and

2003 $10 DF03 Last Annual Prefix issues. Whilst even the general prefix notes are virtually impossible to find in change in Unc, it is the inclusion of the First & Last Prefix types that makes this offer especially irresistible.Among the most sought after decimal notes, First and Last Prefix issues are pursued for their rarity and potential – as illustrated by the $10 polymer series. The 1994 $10 KE93 Last Annual Prefix note, for example, is valued at A$750, with the 1994 $10 AA94 First Annual Prefix (A$425), 1994 $10 DF94 Last Signature Prefix (A$850) and 1996 $10 DF96 Last Annual Prefix (A$1,150) all tough-to-find. Further evidence of both the natural rarity and soaring market values that define the area, the 1997 $10 DF97 Last Annual Prefix note has never been sighted in Unc and is valued at A$2,000 in just EF!

Taken from original RBA bundles, and therefore in strictly Unc quality, these key types are available as a set

of nine single notes, a set of Consec Pairs at A$155 off AND a set of Consec Runs of Five at a massive saving of A$525!

Last Prefix of the last ‘Commonwealth’ $10!An important, highly sought after type under any circumstances, as the last of the short-lived 1966-74 $10 ‘Commonwealth of Australia’ banner series, the 1972 $10 Phillips/Wheeler issue is a must-have for serious banknote collectors when found with the TBB Last Signature Prefix – as presented here.

It has only been relatively recently that the Last Signature Prefixes of paper decimal notes have become known amongst the collecting fraternity. Indeed, the 1972 $10 TBB Last Signature Prefix issue was first listed in the McDonald’s Guide just four years ago! With First & Last Prefix issues across the entire

Australian banknote series amongst the most popular types, the disclosure of the Last Prefixes of the decimal paper series has naturally sparked a fierce battle between collectors to hunt down these desirable notes. Seldom offered in any condition, and missing from most collections, this is a rare opportunity for

our clients to own an example of one of the earliest decimal Last Prefix notes. Conservatively graded at about Uncirculated quality, we have the rarely seen 1972 $10 Phillips/Wheeler TBB Last Prefix note available individually – and in rare Consecutive Pairs!

Australia’s last predecimal banknotes!Drawing the curtain down on our first national currency system, Australia’s final predecimal notes are a compulsory element of every collection – no matter what your interest. First issued over half a century ago, and withdrawn 45 years ago at the onset of the decimal era, the notes of Elizabeth II form one of the key signposts on the

highway of Australia’s numismatic and cultural heritage – and are highly sought after in any grade. Issued from 1960 to 1965 under the auspices of the Reserve Bank, and bearing the Coombs/Wilson signature combination, Australia’s concluding predecimal note issue comprised the 10/-, £1, £5 and £10.

Acknowledged for the distinctive beauty of the designs, and also crucial as the first Australian banknotes

issued for the long reigning Queen

Elizabeth II, the 1960-65 Reserve Bank notes are hotly pursued as the last of their kind. Today well known for their scarcity – especially the higher denominations – the most surprising thing is that these historically invaluable Elizabeth II notes can still be acquired at a reasonable price.

Desired by collector and non-collector alike, the chance to acquire this short-lived, important predecimal banknote collection at less than A$300 must not be missed. Retaining their bold colours, the higher denomination £5 and £10 are presented in Fine condition, with the 10/- and £1 notes offered in strong Very Fine quality.

And the notes that replaced them!

In 1966, Australia witnessed the birth of a new banknote currency system, with the 10/-, £1, £5 and £10 offered above consigned to history, and the $1, $2, $10 and $20 taking their place. The $5 denomination was added a year later, completing Australia’s first decimal banknote type set – distinguished by the ‘Commonwealth of Australia’ banner. A vital component of every Australian banknote collection,

and sought after by people from all walks of life as a reminder of the ‘early days’ of decimal currency, before the replacement of paper notes with coin and polymer, the Commonwealth of Australia banner series lasted only until 1974. It was in that year that the ALP

Whitlam Government, driven by a desire to emphasise Australia’s independence from

Great Britain, modified the ‘Commonwealth’

banner to read simply ‘Australia’. During this brief period, Australia’s Commonwealth banner notes were only issued under four signature combinations – 1966 Coombs/Wilson, 1967 Coombs/Randall, 1969 Phillips/Randall and 1972 Phillips/Wheeler.

Increasingly difficult to secure, especially in decent grade, we have the $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20 Commonwealth banner note types in stock – our choice of signatures. A bargain at only A$169, especially given the excellent quality, this short-lived 5-note series is available in impressive Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition!

TINY LIMITED EDITION!Released on the last day of the 1998 Sydney ANDA Show, this seldom seen Bass & Flinders PNC is one of Australia’s rarest PNCs. Only 1,000 were issued, with a vast majority of that tiny number destroyed at the end of the Show! This unusual commemorative Show release originally comprised

three official 1998 Bass & Flinders PNCs – each featuring the Bass & Flinders 50c Unc, as well as two Australia Post stamps. Issued over the three days of the Show, the three PNCs were distinguished by a different postmark, dated 30 October, 31 October and 1 November respectively. Only 1,000 PNCs were

issued per day, but on no day was the full limited edition sold, with the remainder being destroyed. With crowds naturally low on the final day of the Show, the 1 November PNC is especially rare, as a greater proportion were left unsold and destroyed. Seldom seen on the market, we have a small number of the

exceedingly rare Bass & Flinders ANDA Show Nov 1st PNC in stock – at A$46 OFF the catalogue price of A$195!

Holy Smoke!Sure to continue the barnstorming success of the ‘rub & sniff’ concept, we are pleased to present the new 2011 $5 Scent of Incense Silver Proof! Just rub the brilliant full-colour design on the reverse, and a potent waft of exotic incense is released! Composed of aromatic plant matter taken from trees found largely in India, Africa and Arabia, and often combined with essential oils, incense may well have originated in Ancient Egypt, where it was used as an aromatic

and disinfectant during mummification. Employed in ceremonies by many religions in the centuries since, incense, or ‘Holy Smoke’, as it is known, also has a long history of medical applications. Today, incense is still used widely – being employed in anything from the field of aromatherapy to deterring insects like mosquitoes! Featuring a full-colour depiction of an incense holder emitting Holy Smoke, this exclusive new 38.61mm 25g sterling silver ‘rub &

sniff’ coin is the perfect partner for any of the coins on this page – but you will have to be quick! With each of the few coins enhanced with this sensational minting technique devastated by demand, and everyone seeking a piece of the action, we have secured only a small allocation from the tiny worldwide mintage of 2,500 – and our stock won’t last for long!
