Students learn language that prepares them to communicate with others through oral language, print, and media. Although students will need to know vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information, they learn them in order to use them purposefully for communication with others. This emphasis on communication aligns the SCS curriculum with state and national standards. At each of level of world language instruction, students expand the topics on which they are able to communicate, the ways in which they are able to express themselves and understand others, and the sophistication with which they can express ideas. Student understanding of other cultures, ability to behave in culturally acceptable ways, and to recognize the relationships between language and culture grow with each unit, year, and level of world language study. Each level of the SCS language curriculum is guided by clear statements of what students will know and be able to do. Realistic expectations for how well students will be able to use their language and cultural skills are also clearly stated. These objectives determine what teachers teach, what practice activities are provided to students, and how student progress is evaluated. Ultimately, because the goal of learning language is to be able to use it, SCS teachers are expected to test and evaluate their students on what students can do with what they have learned. SCS world language course descriptions include: 1) a series of ‘can do’ statements that indicate what students are expected to demonstrate their ability to do by the end of each academic year of instruction, and 2) a description of how well students can use the language they have learned at the end of the year. How well will you be able to use their language at the end of the First Year? By the end of your first year of language study, you can understand and say a lot. You can read and write in the language, as well. In general, you can confidently give personal information about yourself, as well as information about others; you can tell about your likes and dislikes, your preferences and your needs, and you can even begin to handle yourself using the language for some daily functions, like asking for or giving directions or maybe even buying things like food or clothing. You provide information--either by making statements or answering questions--using words, phrases or short sentences (sometimes memorized) based on the situation. When you hear the language, you may need to have it repeated, but you will probably be able to figure it out as long as the speaker remembers that you are a language learner. You can also ask easy questions to get information that you need. When you read, you understand the main idea(s) and you can pick out a few details. In writing, you will find that you can write much of what you can say by making lists, writing short messages and notes and even writing brief Internet-based social communications, using words, phrases or short sentences. You will probably make some mistakes when you communicate, but you should keep in mind that these mistakes are a natural part of learning a new language. Just pay attention to them to see if you can begin to eliminate them.**Students do not progress to a new proficiency level each year. Student Outcomes

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRINTING HIS/HER OWN NOTES! IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER OR INTERNET AT HOME, YOU MAY EARN “APUNTES” PASSES BY PARTICIPATING IN CLASS OR BY ATTENDING MY TUTORING SESSIONS AND I WILL PRINT YOUR NOTES.

Supplies: 3 ring binder (any color), Blue and Black ink pens, Perforated notebook paper, dividers, copy paper, computer and internet access, Spanish/English dictionary, email address, white out, textbook, small stapler. Project supplies will be announced via email at a later date. Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend class daily. As this is a performance-based class, attendance is imperative for student success. You must be present in order to progress. Excessive tardies and/or absences will have a negative effect on your grade. After 3 tardies, parents will be called. At the 5 th tardy, paperwork will be written. Classroom Expectations: See attached Expectations and Responsibilities Contract. Conduct Rubric: 2 phone calls to parents per nine weeks: S in conduct

3-4 phone calls to parents per nine weeks: N in conduct More than 4 calls or disciplinary referral for conduct: U in conduct No phone calls to parents per nine weeks: E in conduct

1. Students are expected to come to class on time, everyday, with the needed materials. Consequences for tardy students: Parent phone call/ Parent conference/Office referral. Afterevery 5 tardies/absences, paperwork will be sent to the office.

2. Students are expected to show respect to the instructor, classmates, administrators, and themselves at all times. Consequences for class disruptions: Parent phone call/ Parent conference /Office referral.

3. Students are expected to complete all assignments and maintain decent grades.

Consequences for not working: Parent phone call/ Parent conference /Office referral, Work will be collected and IMMEDIATELY graded and recorded.

Students, with an excused absence, will be allowed to makeup work. Students

Academic Honesty Statement: In their writings and projects, students will not include text or images from any source—books, periodicals, Internet, etc.—without appropriate credit to the source. Any action contrary to this policy will result in plagiarism and the student incurring in such will earn a failing grade in the work submitted, as well as a “U” in conduct. Both are non-negotiable. Students work on the Honor System. This system affects all independent and/or individual work such as quizzes, tests, homework assignments, projects, and the like. Students in the Honor System act honorably at all times; they do not request or offer help of any kind, nor do they cheat. Cheating of any kind implies breaking the code and the subsequent loss of teacher’s trust, as well as a non-negotiable failing grade.

CHECK MY WEBPAGE: mslford.weebly.com everyday. Your weekly oral quiz will be posted every Friday for the upcoming week.

Restroom Policy: Each student will be allotted 3 restroom passes per quarter. I have a "no ask" restroom policy. This means that you will quietly get the hall pass (located near my desk), leave the class for the nearest restroom, and be back within 3 minutes. After the 3rd pass has been used, you will NOT be allowed to leave class. I do keep accurate documentation of your passes. Food/drink Policy: You are NOT allowed to eat/drink in my classroom. No food/drink should be visible. If food or drink is seen, I will give a warning the first time, afterwards, it may be confiscated, and you will stand for a designated amount of time. Cell Phone/Electronic devices Policy: No cell phone/electronic device should be seen, nor heard during my class. If so, I will confiscate your device, and hold it for 3 days. A parent/guardian will have to pick it up. Also, if your cell phone lights up during class, due to a call, text, or otherwise, it will be confiscated.

Tardy Policy: If you are not seated in your seat when the tardy bell rings, YOU ARE LATE! If you are late, immediately after/while the bell has rung, or is ringing, I will allow you to enter, HOWEVER, your tardy will be documented. After every 5 tardies or absences, I will write you up, which will result in a parent conference, and/or suspension. If you are late, you must bring me an OFFICIAL ADMIT from your grade appropriate office. NO HANDWRITTEN/ ORAL NOTES FROM TEACHERS/ADMINISTRATORS/COACHES OR ANYONE ELSE WILL BE ACCEPTED!
