We would like to welcome you and your child to Mickley
Sunflowers.
We hope you will have a happy time with us.
We work as a team at school and we would like to include
you in our team by sharing in the education of your child.
Parents are always welcome into the Sunflowers, so do not
hesitate to call us – whatever the reason.
Your child must always be brought to school by a parent or
nominated and collected by them from the Sunflowers at

Please let us know if someone else is collecting your child.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SETTLE INTO THE
SUNFLOWERS
1. Talk to him/her. Tell him/her about the things he/she
will be able to see and do in the Sunflowers.
2. Look at books together, talk about them, look at
pictures, read stories: make this a special time of day.
3. Help them to become more confident in school by
helping them put on their coat, manage shoes and
dress themselves and enabling them to use the toilet
independently.
4. Talk about what they have been doing. Give lots of
praise.
5. Value their pictures and paintings. (It might seem
messy to an adult but it is of great importance to the
child).
PLEASE PUT NAMES IN HATS, COATS, WELLIES AND JUMPERS
Try and dress your child in old clothes. If they have to
worry about spoiling their clothes they will not enjoy
playing.
Try to discourage your child from bringing toys from home
as they may get lost or broken.
PARENTS
Parents are welcome into the Sunflowers. We believe that
links with home and school are very important. We
complete a learning journal about your child’s educational
journey through Sunflowers which we share regularly with
you. Staff are always available to discuss any queries or
problems you may have, so don’t go home and worry, come
in and have a chat.
We have a Parent’s Notice Board in the Entrance Hall and
outside the school building on the walls on which you will
find relevant information for both Key Stage 1, The
Sunflowers, and local information.
Some parents might like to help us on a regular basis. We
are always pleased to have any help with things such as
snacks and cooking.
Please come and see us if you are interested. All
volunteers will need to have a CRB check for the
protection of our children.
EARLY LEARNING GOALS
Whilst in the Sunflowers your child will be introduced to
the following seven areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development- PSED
Literacy
Communication and Language
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Physical Development
Expressive Arts and Design
Below is a brief detail about each area: Communication and Language – In this area they will
learn to communicate clearly with adults and children.
Children work in small and large groups to encourage
language development.
Literacy -They will learn to listen to stories, instructions
and to each other, to extend their vocabulary and to be
encouraged to use their own imaginations. They will also
learn to listen to sounds and to repeat sound they hear and
link to letters. They will be encouraged to hold a pencil
correctly and learn to form their letters correctly. They
will also begin to learn reading skills.
Mathematics – In this area they will learn to count and
use numbers in practical situations. They will be
encouraged to solve simple maths problems and learn
mathematical language such as shape names, weight and
length.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – In this
area your child will learn to play and make friendships, to
share and take turns and will discover about other cultures
and beliefs. They will be encouraged to use manners and
consider the consequences of their actions. They will also
be urged to become independent in looking after
themselves.
Physical Development – In this area they will learn to
move safely and with confidence to climb and balance,
improve their ball skills, to handle a variety of tools
safely and recognise the importance of being healthy.
Understanding the World – In this area they will
investigate objects and materials using their senses. They
will find out why things happen and how things work. They
will use a variety of construction kits and recyclable
materials to build with and will be encouraged to use a
selection of tools. They will discover things about the past
and find out about their own environment and those of
other countries. They will have access to a variety of
technological equipment, including tape recorders and
computers.
Expressive Arts and Design – In this area they will
undertake a variety of creative activities such as: painting,
drawing, collage, sewing, dancing, listening to, and making

children will develop skills with their own hands.
They will learn to recognise colour, shape and size, and
begin to understand about number and measure.
Through play they will develop concentration and will be
encouraged to handle, look at and “read” books.
They will be able to dress up and use their imagination – no
jewellery may be worn in Sunflowers.
They will learn to share and take turns.
Once full time your child will have more formal sessions
for part of the day.
