I hope that everyone is ready to enjoy Spring. We are fortunate to have a number of members that contribute to the benefit of the entire Guild. We are making steps to update the organization to make it as appealing and as interesting a club as possible. I feel that we are fortunate to have the some of the most industrious and conscientious volunteer board members, all of whom work very hard for the members and the Guild. We hope that you enjoy our upcoming programs.

Our program for April 10 at the TechShop in Allen Park is sure to be good one. Our program will feature one of the premier artists and authors in the area of Intarsia, Kathy Wise. She is an experienced teacher and authority in this centuries old craft. The program will begin promptly at 2 PM. For those less familiar with the artform:

Intarsia (ĭntär'sē#) is an early Italian Art form of wood inlay. The term is specifically applied to a type of inlaying probably developed in Siena, Italy, in the 13th century and derived from Middle Eastern inlays of ivory upon wood. This art was widely practiced in Italy from c.1400 to c.1600. Intarsia work was also practiced to a more restricted degree elsewhere in Western Europe. Designs included pictorial scenes and conventionalized scrolls, arabesques, and geometric forms. The demand for intarsia declined thereafter, although some works were still produced. After about 1620, marquetry (flat inlay) tended to replace intarsia in sophisticated work.

Today, intarsia is created by selecting different types of wood, using its natural grain patterns and colors to create the different colors in the pattern. Each piece of wood is then individually cut , shaped, and sanded before fitting them together like a jig-saw puzzle and gluing them to a piece of 1/4 inch plywood backing cut to the shape of the final product. Sometimes, additional pieces of plywood are used to raise areas of the pattern to create more depth. Once together, a final layer of finish is applied and the project is complete.

Kathy will walk us through all of the steps required to create beautiful artwork, from the pattern to the finished product. This program will appeal to woodworkers of all levels. Check out her website: http://www.wiseintarsia.com/index.htm

Our March showcase meeting at the Livonia Senior Center was a notable success. We had a total of 20 members showcasing their projects. The projects on display ranged from relatively straight forward to Ed Stuckey’s Federal Card Table with its extensive inlay, parquetry, and veneer work. Members displaying their work included: Ron Roman, Jim Morningstar, John Fitzpatrick, Tony Gigliotti, Tom Kearns, Jim Doig, Zac Herbert, Fred Ball, Rich Bailey, Russ Smith, Bill Vetter, Bill Gayde. Gary Garner, Rich Herbert, Ann Ivory, Alex McNeilly, Vince Choraszewski, Jerry Schmidt, Neal Hoegemeyer, and Ed Stuckey. If I have missed anyone who displayed work, please accept my apology. All of the displayed projects help me form new ideas for my own work. I have always found the annual showcase meeting to be one of the best meetings in each year. I will not try and describe or provide photographs of each and every project that was displayed. Limitations on size for printed copy and on file size (thus photo quality) on emailed newsletters severely constrains what can be provided. At some future point, when the Guild achieves a working and effective web page, newsletters including all the photos of showcase projects for that year may be able to be posted and available for all MWG members. Until then (hopefully by next year’s showcase meeting) a sampling of projects on display is provided by the pictures which follow. The projects speak for themselves in ways that I could not enhance.
