Michael and All
Angels Day
Sept. 29, 2019
A special themed service like today, and a 5th Sunday of a month, gives us a chance to use Morning Praise (p.45 in the red hymnal) and greet this day with praise for God’s mercies which are new every morning.
WALKING TOGETHER: Under the Protection of Angels
St. Michael and All Angels day has been celebrated since the 12th Century (also called Michaelmas) in the Church. While Lutherans have done away with many “saint” days, this one they kept because they saw it mainly as a festival that celebrated Christ – his power and his comfort he gives through his command of the angels. Since September 29th falls on a Sunday this year, we will join much of the Christian Church in observing this comforting and cool teaching: “He will command his angels concerning you.”

PRAYER OF THE DAY
L. Let us pray. Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the
ministries of angels and mortals. Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels
always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your direction they may help and
defend us here on earth; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C. Amen.

PSALM 91
He who dwells in the shelter of the / Most High will rest in the shadow of the Al- / mighty. I will say / of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in / whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the / fowler’s snare and from the deadly / pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under your wings you will find / refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and / rampart.
Refrain
You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that / flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at / midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at / your right hand, but it will not come / near you.
Refrain
If you make the Most High your dwelling – even the LORD, who is my / refuge- then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come / near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in / all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot
a- / gainst a stone.
Glory be to the Father and / to the Son and to the Holy / Spirit, as it was in the be- / ginning, is now, and will be forever. / Amen. Refrain

By his angels,
through his Word,
Satan is defeated
by Christ. And that
means our joy is
certain – heaven is
ours!
Silence for meditation
L Lord God, our refuge and fortress, your faithfulness has protected us through this day.
Now send your holy angels to guard us from danger through this night. Give us peaceful rest, free from fear, that we may wake refreshed to serve you, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.
G Amen.
THE WORD OF GOD
FIRST LESSON Daniel 10:10-14; 12:1-3
10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.
12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
SECOND LESSON Luke 10:17-20
17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
L. Give thanks to the Lord; call on his name; make known among the nations what he has
done.

Martin Luther
called the Te Deum
the fourth creed of
the Christian
Church. It has been
used in different
musical settings for
centuries as part of
the service of
Morning Praise.
Here is a song and
confession that
sets all doubt aside
and in faith
proclaims God our
everything.
Note the reference
to angels in the
very first stanza.
HYMN OF THE DAY – CW:#195 – Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty
SERMON LESSON Revelation 12:7-12
7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. 12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”

Guests, you
certainly are
invited to
participate in our
offering today but
please don’t feel
compelled to give.
The Bible says,
“God loves a
cheerful giver.” So
we bring our
offerings out of
love and
thankfulness for all
God has done for
us and to support
the ministry of
telling others about
that love.
THE OFFERING
LORD, HAVE MERCY
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

*195 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty*
1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Who was and is and evermore shall be.
3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.
4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your Church adored:
All creation shows your glory; Heav’n and earth draw near your throne,
Singing, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts and God alone!”
2 True apostles, faithful prophets, Saints who set their world ablaze,
Martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, Join one growing song of praise,
While your Church on earth confesses One majestic Trinity:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally.

3 Jesus Christ, the King of glory, Everlasting Son of God,
Humble was your virgin mother, Hard the lonely path you trod:
By your cross is sin defeated, Hell confronted face to face,
Heaven opened to believers, Sinners justified by grace.
4 Christ, at God’s right hand victorious, You will judge the world you made;
Lord, in mercy help your servants For whose freedom you have paid:
Raise us up from dust to glory; Guard us from all sin today.
King enthroned above all praises, Save your people, God, we pray.
