Introducing MGW 5100

When deploying IP based broadband networks that offer end-to-end voice, data and video services, operators are searching for solutions that will give them the competitive edge. The difference relies on reliability, availability, flexibility and quality of service. MGW 1100, an integrated carrier grade TV streaming platform represents a new concept for video encoding and streaming a solution originated to meet these specific new market challenges.

MGW 1100 enables operators stream top quality TV over IP based broadband networks such as ADSL2+, VDSL and FTTH. MGW 1100 is a multi-service platform that encodes, transCodes (converts one format to another), transmits and recasts up to 12 channels from a single box.

Each channel can be independently configured to compress the TV source into MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VC1 (upon format standardization) and MPEG-4 AVC video formats. All channels encapsulated over Multicast IP and can be streamed simultaneously via the same output port for network distribution.

An SNMP Management Package offers provisioning, monitoring, and control of all 12 channels from a single graphic user interface.

The Shift into MPEG4 AVC H.264

Optibase MGW1100 platform features a state-of-the-art video codec service board called MGES5610 ratified as part of the MPEG-4 AVC standard (MPEG-4 Part 10 H.264). The MPEG4 AVC compression standard aims to provide the same broadcast video quality with around %45 less bit rate compared with todays existing technology (MPEG2) The Optibase MGW solution address the need to migrate into MPEG4 but also consider the fact that such a migration can never happen overnight. The MGW new concept of multi-service video enables operators to start with MPEG2 streaming, which today is a mature, low cost technology allowing them to first stabilizes their new IPTV network components. At the next phase, when time comes and operator is ready, it is easy to add MPEG4 boards (while MPEG2 system is running) to process the same channels within the same platform doing that with no service downtime - keeping a minimal OPEX, no training and no rewiring of the head end. At this phase, operator is doing simulcast providing the same channel over more than one compression format. During a simulcast there is a need to use a hybrid set top box (to support both formats) or to make subscribers segmentation (new subscribers will get MPEG4 boxes and old ones will keep on using MPEG2 boxes). Hybrid set top boxes are available today with a negligible cost difference.(compared to an MPEG4-only box) At the third and last phase, operator should make a decision keep on doing simulcast or stopping the MPEG2 channels, keeping MPEG4 AVC only. Migration completed safely!

System Diagram

The MGW 5100 is the key component of the IPTV video head end. The TV Platform allows high quality encoding, transCoding and streaming of MPEG over various networks. The processed digital video is then multicast to the subscribers TVs and viewed using any standard IP Set Top Boxes (STBs). The encoders, channel lineup, video servers and STBs are all managed by a middleware software that also provides the users interface.

TV over IP solution

The middleware provides management and security for viewers who are authenticated and allowed to view and even purchase content that is delivered directly to their homes. Another major building block in the IPTV backbone is the access distribution network, the xDSL or FTTx network. This portion of the system must provide broadband connectivity to the home for the content distribution in addition to basic high bandwidth, Internet access and voice.

MGW5100 Applications

Overview

The MGW 5100 is one of the most crucial cornerstones of the IPTV service. Being an integrated, carrier grade platform, the MGW 5100 gives the ability to encode, transCode and stream high quality MPEG content on a variety of broadband networks.

Optibase is constantly integrating the MGW 5100 with industry leading vendors to insure seamless integration in any TV over Broadband application. Any standards based STBs will also work seamlessly, presenting the high quality streamed output from the MGW 5100.

The TV value chain

Broadcast TV

At present, Telcos are feeling the encroachment of cable and ISP vendors on their territories, and revenue streams. However, one factor that Telcos can easily turn into a competitive advantage is the ability to offer flexible direct billable services to their subscribers. Very few changes to the billing systems are necessary with the addition of services such as Broadcast TV. By adding video, Telcos can not only realize additional revenue each month, but can also improve customer satisfaction.

However, consumers will only make the switch if the quality, breadth of offering and viewer interaction of the Telco TV over broadband offering is equal to or exceeds that of cable and direct broadcast satellite services already in place. If the offering is only equal to that of a competitor, customers look for better pricing from a Telco to differentiate its services and greater programming flexibility.

The MGW5100 with its DVB TransCoding capability is the enabling device for such applications. Using an integrated solution such as MGW5100 with high channel-density and High-quality TransCoding to low bit-rates makes it the most cost-effective solution for Broadcast TV applications.

Maintaining the high quality of the source video, efficiently utilizing the available bandwidth of the network and the low price per channel, are the solution keys in order to ensure a true business model for video services.

TV to the PC

The Windows Media Technologies (WMT) service is a unique added value, provided in addition to the standard TV services. It gives the service provider a new source of revenues and an attractive package, which neither cable nor DBS providers can ever compete with. using the same MGW platform, utilized for TV service operator can add a set of live channels to be viewed over the customer PC, using any Windows Media Player application. Financial, News and weather channels are the most common candidates for such an added value service.

Upload to Video Servers for RT nPVR

Network Personal Video Recoding (nPVR) is a key added value service for any TV over broadband application. Optibase is always at the forefront by integrating and with industry leading video servers to ensure seamless operation in order to implement this very valuable network feature. The high quality streaming output from the MGW 5100 is encoded according to industry standards to ensure complete interoperability with video server vendors.

MGW5100 Management System

EMS The MGW 5100 Element Management System

Optibase Video Management Concept

Optibase has adopted and created an innovative concept for managing video channels. Contrary to the former management concept, which is based on the control and monitoring of the physical entities such as boards, slots, chassis, ports, etc., Optibase concept defines a logical entity called Video Channel that may be constructed of multiple physical entities.

This innovative concept was designed to adapt to the requirements of carriers and assure the reliability and availability of the system. There is no need for an additional service management layer for analyzing faults or for easy configuration.

Accessing MGW 5100

MGW 5100 management is performed from the MGW 5100 EMS (Element Management System), an SNMP based management application installed on a PC on the network. The MGW 5100 EMS allows you to remotely add, edit and remove service channels associated with installed hardware.

Different Users

Different types of users are allowed by the EMS system. Users can create, delete or modify channels. They can also view configurations for monitoring purposes.

Optibase Cluster Manager Software package presents a unique control and monitoring concept for video systems and networking. It is based on the design and system architecture of the MGW 5100 and enables an N+K redundancy implementation. The N+K redundancy is the most sophisticated and cost-effective method to assure reliable video streaming service over broadband networks. The figure below gives a general overview of the network domain when controlled by the Cluster Manager.

Cluster Manager networking control domain

Cluster Manager Control flow

The Cluster Manager application controls all TV platforms detected on the network, also the video matrix switches and the IRDs. Such a full network control gives the CM application the strength to act upon failures and perform consequent actions

Disaster recovery solution using the MGW5100 and its Management Suite

General

The redundancy process is composed of a few offline and online stages that are described in the next paragraphs:

Configuration

Optibase approach to service chain management is based on the concept of a video channel. A video channel is attached to a physical entity such as a service board, e.g. encoder or DTA. These boards are limited resources in the system and therefore during the configuration phase it is necessary to decide how many resources should be allocated as a backup resource.

For example: There are 10 video encoding programs received by a satellite dish that we would like to encode and stream over an IP network. By using the Cluster Management tool we can configure 10 video channels that will initiate at the IRD and end at the Ethernet output interface toward the distribution network.

If we want to add redundancy, which is based on the N+K feature, the required physical resources must exist in a pre-configured backup pool. In our example the redundancy pool must consist of the same type of encoding boards and an available port on the video matrix/switch

Control

After configuring the primary channels and the resource pools, we are ready to activate the video channels and play the video/audio. This will also trigger the redundancy mechanism for each channel that is configured to have a backup resource.

Stop, play, view and edit actions can be done to the whole video channel without interfering with the performance of other active channels.

Fault Management Detection

Ongoing monitoring processes perform a sequential inspection of the system components, using either synchronous or asynchronous methods.

When a fault is detected, either by the individual platform internal controller or by the Cluster Manager external manager, a message is logged in the Cluster Manager database. If this fault message code represents a critical fault in the video channel, the Auto-switching mechanism is alerted.

Auto-switching

In this phase the redundancy module algorithm is activated and a backup path is created using an available resource from the backup pool. The Cluster Manager and Host controller will immediately configure the identical parameters on the backup board and will play the channel ASAP. The entire process is reported to and documented by the Cluster Manager. The presentation of the various platforms changes to reflect the real time status.

3 seconds and the faulty channel is created and played on one of the available redundancy pool resources.

Recovery

When the backup channel is active we have a time slot for fixing the problem and freeing our backup pool again. A recovery action is possible after the problem is repaired. A manual recovery action can be done at this time to recover the original channel.

System Architecture

Overview

The MGW 5100 was designed with dependability and high availability at the forefront. The main design criteria for the platform is no single point of failure. With this in mind, the back plane chosen was the PICMG 2.16 compact PCI back plane built in a dual star topology. This architecture allows for two independent data paths for each board or module used in the platform. The incorporation of this standard ensures that the MGW 5100 has carrier grade reliability.

Benefits

The use of PCMIG 2.16 now allows the MGW 5100 to have two independent hosts and switches. One of these is primary and the other a hot stand by. In the event of fault in one of these primary systems, the back up takes over all tasks without any interruption of service. Alarms are also sent to the management systems alerting the technician to the problem. Once the technician has cleared the problem or fault, service is restored to the primary modules, again without any interruption of service.

Since the back plane is Ethernet based, it is easy to integrate new technologies by using off-the-shelf Pentium based products that can run hardware or software solutions. Communication and control become non-issues when the platforms internal infrastructure supports common standards like IP, TCP/UDP, FTP and SNMP.

Hardware Overview

Service (front) and I/O (rear) Boards

Slots 1-6 and 11-17 accommodate up to 13 MPEG encoders and/or DVB DTA boards. The host controller boards are installed in the slot labeled Control A. The switch boards are installed in the slot labeled Switch A. The slots labeled Control B and Switch B are for redundancy purposes.

Video processing is done on the front boards (MPEG encoding, ASI demuxing, VC1 (upon format standardization) encoding and Music channels streaming) while the rear boards are the interface to the TV channels source (analog, SDI, ASI).

A combination of rear+front is called an MGW5100 service.

MGW 5100 also lets you install an alarm board, which controls the fan speed and system physical condition, and notifies you of defective components. This board installs from the rear in the slot labeled Alarm.
